It's probably been mentioned already but how refreshing it was to leave 3 upfront when defending a corner leaving it man for man in the box.

I hope we continue to do it.

I think you'll see opposition now planning for this tactic - until you see what they do and how we cope then perhaps hold back on the happiness. i wouldn't be looking forward to maguire having no one in the way of his run and being marked by mendy !!!

Really ?? You think that will happen??

It worked well yesterday as the are w big physical side and it made them put people back to mark the 3 we left up. We should be leaving 2 at least. It's clears the box which definitely helps the defence and keeper.

I think it was a one off. Doubt we will be doing that regularly. Got to focus more on just clearing those balls out of the box when they are pumped in and drop right in front of kasper.

if we continue then it should only be two as has been discussed in the tactics thread.....

We aren't Liverpool, we do not have their strength on the bench to come on and kill off teams when they are getting tired.

The players were running on fumes by the last 20 mins yesterday which is hardly surprising.

This International break couldnt have come at a better time.

It's a fair point

I've read (heard?) suggestion that we didn't create chances, didn't deserve the win and only won because of two "worldies" (as if they can be excluded from the 'real' score) Despite the fact that all goals count equal (even those off Nacho's backside) Tim's thunderbolt was indeed a 'chance' created; a lovely diagonal ball from Mendy to Barnes, a run that created space and a cut back for TC. OK, 9 times out of 10 that shot's going wide, or over, but it didn't and more to the point, it counts.

We created loadsa chances in that first half and could easily have been 4 up at half time.

I get xG and can appreciate how it's used. It is a useful metric and I can see, for example, how it can play out over a season for betting purposes - win some, lose some. I equally like the 'deserved to win' metric; it's often a very personal take and I'm baffled sometimes by what managers see (BR included) in their team's performance to suggest it "deserved" something other than what actually happened.

...we had chances to score prior to the last 20 minutes and failed to convert!!!

We are not a ruthless team, we overplay and let teams off the hook when we are well on top, it is a failing, but with our new attitude to the game in respect to its management, we might just start to put the ruthless streak into place.

What's this new trainers and suit combo the players have to wear before the game?! Terrible! Youri and Barnes seem the only ones that match the suits with smart shoes. Standards!

Also, is Soumare heavily limping on his arrival, too?? Or does he just walk really, really weirdly?

Maguire's run forward 🤣🤣! Forgetting his current form, when he played for us, his so called 'runs' forward were so slow and ponderous that by the time he got to the half way line the opposition defences had picked up Vardy's inevitable run and that of most other of our players. Admittedly he does have a very good pass in him but he's no Rio Ferdinand! Mendy will have time to get a fag on with others ready to back him up. Remember also that when Maguire runs forward, he can't get back. The only reason he got away with it here was he had the excellent game reading of Evans to bail him out. I seem to remember that statistically,  we let less goals in when the ageing Morgan played alongside Evans when Maguire was out.

I’m speaking specifically about corners ……..

I would rather Mendy in all games over Ndidi except a game against giants like Burnley when we lack height.

I think Mendy’s defensive contributions are understated too. His ability to help the team out of the press and move forward to opposition to opponent’s half is in itself a much better defensive strategy than sitting back and inviting the pressure which unfortunately Ndidi contributes towards. We have all said it so many times this season: we go sideways and backwards too often and as a result invite so much pressure and so many mistakes this season. Attacking or at least  playing further upfield is the best form of defence.

I know, you've been leading that campaign (virtually single-handed) since the days of Claude Puel...Opinions eh?

Very interested to see if we do. Was it a ploy to have an emptier box and allow us room to defend and track men? Or was it because Brentford have had their pants pulled down on the counter from corners before (play off semi the great example)?

My apologies then. Yes, I don't fancy our old zonal tactics on him ie if you're a big opposition player, just pick the zone with the little guy in and head it to the back post because nobody's there 🤣. Awful really.

We were 2-0 up after half an hour obviously we weren’t going to go bombing forward creating chances looking to score loads.

butxG doesn’t show that we were cruising whilst Brentford were chasing it

Haha. I didn’t know I get much attention but thanks.  I may over compensate at times when I feel a certain player is over or under utilised. I really like Ndidi as well and we are lucky to have him, but vesus what Mendy can bring, I feel like we have way under appreciated Mendy.

FWIW, Opta had us "losing" on xG by only 1.2 - 1.7.

Even as an xG proponent, I think this shows the danger of using it as a statistical "last word" about a single match.

We fluffed our three biggest chances (Barnes, Iheanacho, and Justin interfering with the latter), so I think two of those didn't even result in shots?  But would have been high-xG shots.  I'd agree that overall we created chances as good as Brentford's.

Yes, we scored from less likely chances -- because two players of real quality made the most of them.  Madders scoring that free kick surprised nobody.  Kasper saving (high-xG) attempts from point blank is no surprise either; it's what he does best.

We have "lost" on xG in the overwhelming majority of our PL and European matches this season.  In the "xPoints table", only Wolves and Arsenal are exceeding their points in the actual PL table by more than us.  https://understat.com/league/EPL/2021

Wolves are starting to run out of luck.  I don't think we will, because I don't think we've only been riding luck, and we will have more of our defense back in April and May than we've had all season.

I expected Kasper to save all of their chances created except the one they scored. Their chances were half chances at best.

Just reminded me of a scene in Ted Lasso.
