40m is probably as much as we were going to get, it's too risky to drag it on for longer to try and get more, and we don't want players that want to leave involved in pre-season (looks like we will though).

This, thought to be expected actually makes me feel gutted. A team like spurs who we have out performed in respect to trophies over the last few years, now have one of our best players for little. But I do understand the situation, we have to sell.

Madders supposed attitude:

yes he made mistakes (Covid party) but don’t/haven’t we all at times? His interviews were refreshing, mature and he came across as someone well grounded and bought up. It’s no surprise to me, that he wants to stay nearer to his family and his settled home life. Spurs makes sense.

people that are bitter harp on about his arrogance, his back pack etc, seriously?

He is a winner, if anything he was trying to hard at times like that pass against Bournemouth. I’d rather an arrogant/confident penalty taker against Everton rather than someone who is unsure (Vards), to be the best you need arrogance or sure of yourself.

This thread really does highlight the gulf between the bitter, angry “football is my life” group vs those that understand the bigger picture.

Good to see this cleared up before players return for training. Money could have been better but we were never in a strong position once Newcastle backed out.

We've got a nice little kitty for 3 or 4 to come in now and strengthens our selling power for others going.

All the best to Madders, been a pleasure to watch him play at times. As much as its spurs, I genuinely wish him the best there. Think Ange can suit him.

It’s a poor fee considering Southampton are asking for 50 million for Livramento.

But we have let ourselves get into this situation where he has 1 year left and won’t sign a new contract, if Spurs are the only team interested we have no choice but to sell.

They can ask for £50mill all they like but they won’t get it!

£50m for Livramento?

Southampton want a deal closer to £50m for Tino Livramento, according to The Athletic.

Newcastle have reportedly bid £15m for the full-back.

That’s not even a close difference. I can’t see Newcastle going above about £20mill, £25mill at an absolute push. It’s a valuation to put off buyers completely rather than any expectation they would get that.

His contract ends in 2026 from what I can see so Southampton hold the cards really. We didn’t have they luxury with Maddison.

Let's not forget he had to be dropped for disciplinary reasons before a massive game for breaking covid rules in order to enjoy himself as well.

People say he speaks well (to which I'd say they're easily impressed) but the idea he's some kind of model pro is laughable.

Plus the rumours of a regular Thursday club at the snooker gaff.

Aside from if we hold out, and nobody pays £40m now, we then risk losing him for free at the end of the season or at half the price in January.

He’d be snapped up before season start !

Give me Maddison goals and assists contribution to whatever King contributed in his Premier League years. These two players are not on the same level. King doesn't touch our all time 11. Maddison is in the conversation at least.

Give me crucial King goals and assists when we won the Premier League over Maddison's technical ability. No doubt Maddison will go down as one of our best technical players, but he'll also be remembered as a relegated player, a Spursy type, who brought in some money in a time of need.

People will always remember King.

If we sign Winks for a low fee then it does feel like there has been an unwritten part of the negotiations.

Its a good bit of business for Spurs,  let’s hope we get an equal fee for Barnes given he has 2 years left.

Would love to keep him. Would be the best player in the league

He had to go.

He’s had the season to forget and for me his comments have overshadowed whatever he has achieved here.

There’s not many players that go for that much money with only a year left on their contract. Whilst he’s a better player than a £40m fee, it’s pretty good given the circumstances. I think we’ll see Barnes go for somewhere in between £30m-35m.

Funny how subjective football is. My Spurs supporting mate is upset with an excessive £40m. He’s not having it when I tell him it’s a bargain.

Seems a not uncommon opinion across even unrelated fanbases

Its almost like we are partisan  lol

The Mount comparison is valid and feels outrageously unfair, but the <expletive> clubs, just do perpetual reach arounds for each other, in their fetid closed shop, so is outside normal rules it seems

Without King’s contributions prior to Maddison, we probably never would’ve been able to sign Maddison. Like I’ve just said, there’s more to being an all time great than being an exceptional footballer.

Kingy had two goals and two assists in that season

one of each was against Everton post title win

the others were in the 2-2 draw home to West Brom which were no doubt important

he wasn’t a big part of our title win on the pitch. He was a solid pro and decent player. He certainly isn’t near Maddison’s class but as part of our history he is probably more important than madders.

Do you not think other professional footballers drink then?

Course they do, just perhaps think they are smarter than to get twisted at a local gaff when the team is going down the swanny.

Im glad his Spurs tweets are getting an airring on social media, if he thought he had it bad with the fans here wait until those Spurs fans get stuck into him.

They already think he’s a rip off, dodgy tweets and the ability to go missing in the big games he’s going to have it as bad as Maguire has it at Utd.

The way I read the Madders deal it’s £40m up front with a further £5m paid at the end of the season and then add ons on top of that, which could net us a further £5-10 million so deal is much more likely to end up being nearer to £50m which overall isn’t too bad given the circumstances. I also think we will end up with both Winks and Sessagnon for discounted fees , most importantly it has been done relatively quickly and allows us to press ahead with our rebuild.
