Finally! Shouldn’t have taken this long but here we are.

Incredibly brave decision (feels ridiculous saying that.. but it is) especially as the lad is a teenager according to the article, shouldering the responsibility as the first openly gay player in the UK who has their career ahead of them.

Hopefully he is embraced with full support from the majority of fans across the country!

Article is by Alan Nixon in the S*n but I can’t seem to link to it. Appreciate it if someone could :)

*oh and move to Gen Sport… not had enough coffee yet lol

I love how you’ve capitalised Gay

Mate I’ve managed to not include a link, post in the wrong forum and do a typo. I think someone else should just run with this one and delete this 😂

I truly hope it's his choice to do so and not because he's being pressured by his club/parents/partner/stonewall/scumbag newspapers.

Otherwise this is a great step forward and I hope he gets a great reaction from the public. Online reaction from certain quarters probably won't be good tho.

I thought a footballer had already 'come out' a few years back? Either way fair play to him to be confident enough to do so. Obviously he will inevitably be subjected to homophobic chants from the knuckle daggers but overall he should be well received (no pun intended)

Justin Fashanu did while playing iirc but that whole tale is obviously a bit tragic. You'd like to hope attitudes have changed now.

There was a lad in MLS a while back (Rogers?) who did and a guy playing in Australia's A-League came out about a year or so ago too. Hitzelsperger did years after retiring.

This can't be a bad thing but as has been said, hopefully he's doing it for himself rather than there being any external influences pushing it.

Pretty sure a national paper broke a story like this a few years ago saying a high profile player was coming out, then he changed his mind.

Why have a countdown to it, just do it, nobody really cares anyway.

There was a Twitter account called the Secret Gay Footballer, or something similar, for a while who said they were going to do it and then decided against it.

Good luck to the lad. I think most will support him as long as he plays well. Do worry that as soon as goes on a bad run fans will use it as a stick to beat them with though. That’s the biggest worry for me. I think few of our fans would care if Vardy came out as gay, but if Vestergaard did I think it would be a different story for example.

Schmeichel used to get “he’s only famous because of his dad” for years after a couple of bad performances, Maddison gets “he should stop modelling and fannying around with backpacks” Clarke Carlisle once got slaughtered for daring to go on Countdown, I bet plenty of ManUtd fans have used “too busy being a politician” as a stock beat Rashford with given his poor form this season. Sadly I can only see fans picking up on it as a reason to

If it was our fans I’d give it 5 minutes after a couple of poor performances before the “he only gets picked because of his sexuality” “he’s too busy caring more about being some woke icon than playing football” “he’s the manager’s favourite, they must be sleeping together” comments started to come out the woodwork.

Massive fair play to the lad, and to do right at the start of his career, days after his first appearance. Shouldn't have to of course and will hopefully lead to the way for others should they feel the need to share. It's noone elses business.

Huge respect for Jake Daniels, really brave. Only 17 years old too. Hopefully this leads to more footballers being able to be who they are and it not even being an issue, which it shouldn't be.

So when the poor lad starts dating lads the press don't jump on him with a shed load of 'speculation' stories and invade his privacy, probably.

Or the other side of that coin, the toll on his mental health trying to hide it and make sure he's being seen with loads of girls to compensate.

i dont get why he even has to come out? why does the public need to know if he's gay or not? lol

maybe, one day in the future, he wouldn't need to

but for now, due to the ignorance and bigotry of some people, it does have to become an issue

Yes, exactly this.
