unpopular opinion, I quite like Clinton Morrison

I like him a bit more now.

I like him. He's good on the football league highlights, he has a good knowledge of the lower leagues. Generally the ex players that have played in and commentate on the football league seem more knowledgeable.

And Sherwood is just so thick.

As bad as some of the women pundits have been, and they have been shocking. I have to agree with comments on there that if this was a woman making that mistake it would be on every single banter page and tiktok going.

Felt sorry for Aluko last week for her 19 in 40 goal a game gaff. But this is on another level. He's just sat not even paying attention to the game he's watching.

It’s crazy how upset and defensive people get over stuff like this, he was absolutely right that we were in trouble, not out of the woods yet either. Yes he’s a bit of a twat, but he was definitely right in what he said

A bit? I think you're being kind.

Whats really funny and disturbing is that most of you a few months back were probably thinking just like Sherwood with the doom and gloom relagation schizo fan phase only a few months back. Now it all seems a bit of a blur and unthinkable, so you all laugh at his remarks. #****thisfanbase #uppthehhrroddgersss!!!!!! #signthatcontract2027

Morrison isn't particularly insightful but doesn't appear to have an agenda and actually enjoys what he does.

Sherwood is just shit.

All mistakes are picked up now. Hence Sherwood doing the rounds on social media.

Most pundits, male and female, are rubbish. There's only a handful that are any good.

The bloke said it before the season started though, I don't think anyone would begrudge him slating us after Brighton or Spurs

The problem for me is volume.

Like, it takes generational talent to actually be a professional top tier footballer in the first place. Even the worst players to ever play in the Premier League are in the top fraction of a percent of humans on the planet at playing football.

Then you've got to be a good enough analyst and presenter to be on national or international TV both able to understand the game and articulate the nuances of it. You need the talent of a professional broadcaster and professional footballer all in one.

It's obviously going to be a very rare breed that's up to the task.

But the problem is they need fvcking hundreds of them now because there's countless matches broadcast on countless shows across sky, bt, amazon and currently BBC and Itv because of the world cup. There just aren't enough decent pundits to cover it all.

Especially when you start insisting on diversity quotas on every panel. I'm all for the representation but it's obviously going to narrow down the pool you have to choose from. This has been especially problematic for the women's footballers because there's obviously significantly, significantly fewer to choose from. Some have been great, we all love Hayes and I think most would agree Alex Scott has been good.

But Eluko is clearly there to make up the numbers because she was a big name as a player and she's just got no place being on TV. Neither do most of the guys either but it's just unfortunately so much more noticeable for the women who end up being held up to a more unfair standard because of the burden of proving themselves to be more than just a quota.

It also comes down to what their job actually is. The assumption is that they are there to analyse and comment on the nuances of the game.

In practice they are there to entertain the masses. These will mostly support the Big 6 clubs and probably aren't too fussed about detailed technical analysis of the matches. As such, even good pundits such as Gary Neville will drift into the standard Big 6 tropes when they could offer more.

The coverage on the US/Canadian channels such as NBC is so much better as they actually try and be pundits rather than light entertainers.

Exactly. And aren't too fussed about details of players. You can tell some of them just don't know much more than outside the PL, or even the top 6. I always used to have a laugh with one of my mates, who supports Hull, because we were watching them on TV once and Jamie Redknapp described Matty Fryatt (then at Hull) as player with "real pace". It's just not true, as we know he was a slow player, but it's just a generic comment thrown about with, what seemed like, little research into the "smaller club".

Male and female pundits and presenters are responsible for it. There are very few who go into correct detail as you say. But what is annoying me more now is comments aimed at female presenters like Laura Woods, who are just a generic as a male pundit like Redknapp, yet get the "oh she's great". Ally McCoist could say anything and she'd agree with him, for example. It's annoying. If a male or female is good then I'll admit it and I'll give credit to both Kelly Dalglish (as a presenter) and Emma Hayes (as a pundit) who are excellent.

There was a time, and when I had more of the time, when they sometimes got managers on MNF in the hour build up. I liked that as current manager anaylsis is more interesting than listening to a former manager, often a failed manager, just in the studio. But now I often don't even bother with the build up and just turn the TV on when the teams are in the tunnel.

I think it's a bit overplayed, this idea that people want 'Serious Punditry'. The reason Stelling/Merson/Le Tissier/Thompson/Nichols/Kamara were so entertaining was because it was the opposite of that. Yes, they still gave the basic reporting/commentary, informing the viewer of when a goal was scored etc, but ultimately people were drawn to the entertainment side of the show too.

Eni Aluko isn't disliked as a Pundit because of her Race, it's because she doesn't appear to have any personality. That's why people like Clinton Morrison, it's why people like Alex Scott and why people enjoyed Chris Kamara....And the same reason people dislike Sherwood. Sue Smith is another I would throw in there as being a pretty likeable pundit and is arguably the most well spoken pundit when she is in the room. Roy Keane doesn't particularly say anything very insightful and innovative, but again, people like his personality and character and also respect his achievements. Whereas Micah Richards is a complete contrast to him, where he is always energetic and vibrant, but again, I believe is universally liked, because he has a character and personality.

People like Paul Merson, Ian Wright and Chris Kamara because despite making regular mistakes, they just seem like regular down to earth individuals who are more than willing to laugh at themselves. Whereas Aluko and Sherwood come across as boring and in all honesty, pretty arrogant.

Put a poll out there to a white-only audience and ask them whether they would like the new Sky Sports panel to be Richards/Kamara/Morrison or Sherwood/Redknapp/Souness. The overwhelming majority would vote for the first three, again, because they have personality and are likeable. (it's probably a bit unfair on Souness, he's marmite, but unlike the other two does have personality).

Yeah pundits are by and large awful, Sky continuing to invite Patrice Evra back so they can clip up him saying something ****ing moronic and caption it "Patrice really wasn't holding back about his former team mate here 😂😂😂" rather than on the basis he has anything worthwhile to add about sums the state of it up

Good post.

I think we like down to earth people to tell us what's going on.

Never had a problem with female pundits, never had a problem with most of the mainstream pundits.

They've played the game and say it how it is and what they've experienced.

I've said this before and I'll say it again...I'd love to see a show with Alex Scott and Micah Richards. Think it would be hilarious and insightful, in equal measures.

But I also love Roy Keane getting wound up lol

Got a lot of time for Ian Wright too.

One thing I cannot stand, and I make no apologies for it, is women commenting.

Female co-coms have been great, but no woman has THAT voice.

Neither does Sam Matterface! He's awful.

Oh, for the voice of Motty or Barry Davies.

Clinton’s wife actually told Tim that he was suffering from hypochondria and he replied with “ oh no so I’ve got that as well now !”

Sorry 🙂
