It’s a very tenuous link, but presumably Villa would have to buy him out here? Anyone know the clause we have on him? Or is it as simple as paying up his contract? 🤔

From https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/oct/21/aston-villa-ruben-amorim-sporting-mauricio-pochettino-thomas-frank-steven-gerrard

Quote

Sporting paid €15m to land Amorim from Braga and inserted a €30m release clause in the four-year contract he signed in 2020, but Villa are thought not to be deterred by the prospect of having to pay hefty compensation.

Rodgers is made for them.

The headline is

Aston Villa eye an ambitious move for Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim to replace Steven Gerrard as they face a battle to convince No 1 choice Mauricio Pochettino to join... with Brentford's Thomas Frank also in the frame

Didn’t Amorim turn down Wolves?

Poch won’t go there and I reckon Frank will stay at Brentford, so pretty soon they are going to be left with Rodgers and Dyche.

I'd not be surprised if Rodgers representatives made it known that he'd be open to the move, he knows its gone stale here. He isn't getting a big 6 club unless he's sacked and one becomes desperate mid season for a short term solution and the option it turns in to a longer term gig but that's not something he can plan for.

He needs an ambitious club who pay well and spend money, Villa are the standout club in that regard. His ego might enjoy going in and proving Gerrard how to do things too.

I've no doubt we'd look to reject the approach but if Rodgers told Top he'd had enough and the time was right for both to go their sperate ways then I don't think we'd stand in his way.

I'm not convinced we'd let him go or that he'd want to go. Villa are a biggish club but their owners are a bit of an unknown. Plus Rodgers is very comfortable here.

No chance. He feels betrayed. He made oublic He had his summer transfer targets (presumably de Ketelaere) all done and dusted and gets back to his desk and told we're broke.

Don't get me wrong, I think the way he has handled it is disgraceful. But he can't get away quick enough. Lame duck manager.

If you go further into the article Rodgers is mentioned. Reads like he’s the last resort

...if Rodgers saw it as a way out, then there is not that much our club could do!!!

These things are addressed behind closed doors,  by agents, before the club gets involved.

Doesn't Rodgers have a release clause? Would Villa pay up?

The thing with gerrard is that he is obsessed with playing 1 system.  The players at villa didn’t fit the system and even more bizarrely the ones he signed didn’t either.

He did very well at rangers when they had the right guys to make a 4123 work.

The first big issue was having ings and watkins, ings probably suited the 1 striker but watkins was seen as an alround better player but the issue is watkins doesn’t score goals. that system needs a pure goal scorer.  the next big problem is that the next best 2 players were both 10s, buendia and coutiniho, he asked them both to play as wingers but neither have the pace to bring true width.

At rangers he had kent, who was perfect for that role.  Then at cm villa had a good dm in luiz but for the 8’s you need a bit of creativity, ramsey isn’t bad but john mcginn isn’t that type of player, he’s just industrious… but this system needs a youri not a runner.

all the villa fans were desperate to switch to a 4231 and play to the strengths they have … but gerrard was adamant to stick to his system.

A rigid manager like that is always going to fail. You need to adapt to what you have. The signings were just lazy. He thought digne would be his tavernier, bringing goals and assists but the reality is that digne was always overrated and a bit of scouting would show exactly why he flopped at everton.

....I am sure that is not what they are seeing, even our supporters are scared to lose him!!!

Could it be that they are focused on what we are said to need to pay him in order to terminate his contract and they would envisage a similar sum to get him out of his contract.

His narrative is still holding up in the media and most supporters out there believe we are lucky to have him and do not deserve him.

He's Skeggie, as opposed to Torquay or Marbella? Or should I say Blackpool?
