Surely nothing really changed when Saudi Arabia scored? If Mexico scored they would have been on equal goal difference with Poland but one more goal scored.

At 2-0 in both games, Poland and Mexico were identical in everything so it was going down to the fair play rule. For that measure, Mexico had more booking points. 
 

With both teams on 0 GD and Poland looking like they had zero chance of scoring Mexico needed either a 3rd goal from Argentina or a 3rd goal for themselves.

Instead Saudi Arabia scored giving Mexico 4 pts and -1 GD. Poland go through on 4 pts and 0 GD.

The point was it made no difference to Mexico if it was 2-0 or 2-1. If they won 3-0 or 3-1 they would have gone through.
