Harry Souttar signs!

Slight concern is the amount of travelling required for international football. Not ideal having to fly to the other side of the world a few days before an important Premier League fixture.

Should be okay this season but he's likely to be out for a lot of the first half next season - Asian Cup likely to take a similar slot to that of this year's World Cup

Quite a big deal this is over here in Oz, constantly on the news. Thought he had a really decent World Cup for Australia & put in some cracking tackles.

Good signing I think.

I liked the look of him at the World Cup, seems like the type of presence we need at CB

Expert analysis on Harry Souttar, City's latest centre-back signing, as the Australian international looks to prove he can step up to the Premier League after arriving from Stoke

ByJordan Blackwell

Leicester City are no strangers to signing centre-backs. In fact, since Daniel Amartey's arrival in January 2016, they have signed 12 senior central defenders either on a permanent transfer or on loan.

But because they either keep getting injured, falling out of form, or become so good they are sold, City are still lining up with Amartey in their back-line. However, the 12th and most recent recruit may be about to displace him.

Half an hour after the deadline, City announced the signing for Harry Souttar. They wanted a young, up-and-coming centre-back with a strong, physical presence, and 24-year-old, 6ft 6in, World Cup star Souttar fits the bill.

But what can be expected of him? How does he play? Can he make the step up to the Premier League? We spoke the Stoke Sentinel's Pete Smith, who has watched over Souttar's progress over the past six-and-a-half years, to give us the lowdown.

Q: What sort of player is Souttar? How does he like to play and how has he fared during his time at Stoke?

PS: The first thing that everyone notices is his size and there’s nothing wrong with that because he is genuinely massive. He could go eye-to-eye with Peter Crouch as a teenager. He’s filled out too and you wouldn’t want to mess with him. But within the first 10 minutes of watching his debut for the youth team six years ago you could tell he’s a proper footballer too.

Yes, he can be dominant in the air and those backs-to-the-wall games for Australia at the World Cup suited him down to the ground. If you’re going to chip crosses into the box, he’s going to head them out. But he can bring the ball forward from the back and he can ping long passes rather than long balls.

He’s come to the fore at Stoke while they’ve been playing a back three and it’s suited him to play as the middle man. In fact, Michael O’Neill seemed to change the team shape to get the best out of him because he was good enough to build your team upon. We’ve seen enough of him in a back four to appreciate that he can handle that too.

Q: How does his height affect his game? Does he dominate in the air? Is he cumbersome in foot races?

PS: Some of his best games for Stoke have come when the side has sat back, like in cup wins at Aston Villa and Wolves, and he can happily eat up crosses and balls pumped forward all day long. Pat Nevin called him a ‘one-man back four’ during the World Cup, which was quite a fitting line.

One thing that he should be able to add to his game is scoring more at attacking set-pieces. Although when I’ve spoken to him about that, he’s made the point that it’s also part of his job to drag defenders away to make space for others or to flick on or be a handful.

He’s not Usain Bolt but he’s got a deceptive speed with those long legs and he can sweep across to make a recovery tackle. You can tell he loves doing that in fact.

Q: Do you think he has what it takes to step up to the Premier League?

PS: In short, yes. He’s ready for the test. If he’s going to reach his potential then he’s got to play against the best players week in, week out and consistently make those right decisions fast. He’ll rise to the challenge.

He’s not a kid anymore and he’ll give it everything. He’s a good bloke, a good pro with good people around him and Leicester fans will enjoy watching him grow as a player. Who knows what his ceiling is but he’s ready to find out.

The more I read/watch about this guy the more I'm looking forward to seeing him in action. Think he could be a mainstay of our backline for the next 8-10yrs (no pressure). Sounds a bit like a slightly more agile Harry Maguire (which is meant as a compliment btw!). His signing kind of went under the radar a bit with Tete and Albrighton leaving at the same time, but he might turn out to be the pick of the bunch. Good age, feels like an LCFC defender, still room to develop, good character by all accounts. Future captain in the making perhaps...

This signing really has to work out. So much depends on him settling quickly and making the step up with ease.

If Faes can rediscover the form he showed in his first handful of games, and Souttar starts strongly, it could make all the difference to us staying up.

I personally think you’ve got yourself an absolute bargain if the reported £15 million is correct, sadly we’re desperate for any money we can get and don’t have any form of bargaining power. If we could have kept him and Collins Stoke would have been in an amazing position!

Sorry about that mate, I hate to see this kind of thing happen even when it benefits us. Hope you at least put the fee you did yet to good use.

Injured lollollol

Ricardo back very soon and injured again even sooner. What a silly extended contract, when everyone on here is talking about high wages that have been badly managed he has to be the worse example of this, when the medical team must have known that he is going to be injured again WHY give him an extended contract??

Because he is a fantastic player, great personality to have at the club, and as with any player, this might be his last injury. Risk? For sure but not more than any player.

We have just signed a recently injured Souttar ffs,Fofana, Castagne etc etc etc

Last Injury? Are you serious. He is only getting older not younger. Unless Injury prone Ricardo owns a personal Tardis, I’ve got absolutely no idea what you are talking about. An extended contract on a lot of money that is wasted.
