What’s everyone’s favourite?

Not just saying this to be alternative or to boast of my travel exploits but a trip I did in summer 2010 to South East Turkey and Northern Syria was absolutely incredible and now the cities I've stayed in have been reduced to rubble by war and earthquakes.

I count 41 countries in 60 years - must do better!

That doesn't include airport transfers in Bangkok & Rio (saw Thai paddy fields & Christ the Redeemer statue from plane window - surely that should count? )

Can't be arsed to do a  list but basically....West/South Europe, Morocco, USA, Central America (except El Salvador), Andean countries, Aus/NZ.

Rarities:

- Yugoslavia, as it still was when I visited (Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia & North Macedonia as now is - I wasn't in Bosnia, Montenegro or Kosovo)

- Belize

- Bolivia

- Andorra

Would be curious to visit Liechtenstein - anyone been there?

I wonder which countries nobody on FT has visited? North Korea? Somalia? Kiribati or other South Pacific island nations? :dunno:

Know someone who escaped from Communist Bulgaria to either south Serbia or Macedonia (I can't remember exactly where) in the late 80s. Swam across a  stream and crawled through a forest, emerged in 'the West' and remembered that everyone was speaking the same language and living in exactly the same style houses as the village on the Bulgarian side.

Colombia.

Shades of green that just don't exist anywhere else in the world. Mountain tops to jungles to deserts to city centres, the entire nation beats with a vibrancy like no other. Food, football and festivals feed a national psyche; fuelled by rum, aguardiente and music. Tropical islands, Caribbean beaches, Amazonian forest. Everything together with "the most laws in the world", (most of which nobody pays the slightest bit of attention to or finds a way to circumvent).

I never wanted to leave and would live back there in a heartbeat if the wife said 'yes'.

I was sat in a bar there with a couple of mates enjoying a balmy evening beer - heard gunshots nearby...nigh on soiled myself and flapped big time, hardly any of the locals had batted an eyelid!

Another odd little episode from that area c. 1987.....

I was on a train heading north from Greece into Yugoslavia (what is now North Macedonia). A short while after crossing the border, two blokes came into our compartment clearly knowing exactly what they were looking for.

They stood on the seats, removed a couple of panels from the ceiling and extracted several filled sacks from the ceiling cavity. One bloke saw us looking at them, put his finger to his lips and just said "Coffee!" - and they went on their way.

I've always wondered if it really was contraband coffee beans or something else. As the FT Balkans expert, do you have any idea? :dunno:

I'm glad you did that, I was interested in which countries people had been to the football but didn't want people to have to edit their lists!

Sounds great - and very doable. Good luck with it.

Although some of those look a little easier to do than others

So I have read, any recommendations? We are flying to Geneva and heading to Lausanne for a few days.

I went to Zurich and Lucerne . If you're planning on travelling around then buy a swiss pass. Like i said, it's a fantastic country but eye wateringly expensive. A pint is £10 and an average Mcdonalds meal is over £20. My son and his girlfriend paid £20 each to go swimming.
