Then you look at some of the mentalities and attitudes of players we’ve had for the past 2 years (You could argue 4 years given they downed tools and threw away opportunities come the turn of each year, twice) 14

Not everybody wants to come to this city , it ain't sexy. How do you get over that problem? You throw money at it. We have done too much of that and that is a major reason we are where we are. 3

Firstly I thought it was a bit of take from a valid point about us not bidding for him. Olise didn’t have a decision to make for consideration. Don’t think it’s true that cities have that much of a say. 95% of modern footballers live in affluent suburbs, secondary towns or county villages. Our current squads do. They can just rely on others such as drivers if they want ‘the bright lights etc.’ to ferry them down to London 1

You have to sell the club and its ambition to prospective players, we have this financial situation because we are overpaying our players. There are cities that are as attractive as ours, but players still choose to go there for less money. If Rudkin does not have the personality or ability to sell our club in his dealings, unless something changes, nothing will change.

The village pub and tearooms won't impress them. Leicester would be way down the list of locations to socialise in England. Too many underestimate the power that they have over the partners. Driving 60 miles to training is also nobody's idea of fun even if you have a chauffeur.

Just like 95% of our current squad does. Tielemans wife and Faes wife both enjoy living out in the country. Or quite a few of them enjoying West Bridgford or Stoneygate: Schmeichel and Evans did the whole chauffeur thing for their entire period they were here. Kasper had a bed in the back of his!

How about the outskirts of Birmingham? We're not where we are because we spent money, we're where we are because of a combination of spending that money poorly and having a squad and management that had more than just a foot out the door.
StanSP Posted 3 August 2023 Posted 3 August 2023 Palace got any more friendlies? Wonder if he'll play in them.
ALC Fox Posted 3 August 2023 Posted 3 August 2023 (edited) I mean, some players will want to live in a big city, others specifically London. Some of those will be because of the big lights, others because that environment is all they've ever known, or it's their hometown. Others will be happy to sacrifice that for money, others will be happy to join a more 'provincial' side, and some of those will prefer to stay in the suburbs and others in a big country pile. Everyone is different, has different tastes, personalities, priorities, vices. Just like every club, some players will want to play for us and others won't. Palace have great community links and their recruitment has brought in a few of London's most promising talents. But, similarly, there will be players who will prefer to live in a country pile with cleaner air and a place to walk the dogs. It's just about finding the players who are willing to come here, just like every other club Edited 3 August 2023 by ALC Fox 1 1

Its not as easy to convince players as in some computer program. We have used money in the past and that is costing us dearly now. This is a new era and our approach must change.

Have to say Stoneygate was very nice. Lived on Woodland Avenue for 10 years. Good times.
