Still haven’t a clue what his best position would be 🤷‍♂️.

Not technical enough for an inside forward/inverted winger.

Not quick enough to be a winger.

Cant beat a man so not suitable for a wingback.

Only slot I could see him long term is as part of a midfield 3.

Him and Minteh picked the ball in the same position. Minteh runs into the penalty area and makes VK and Coady commit to a tackle,  eventually scoring. McAteer runs away from the goal, making the LBs job easier, eventually settling for a corner. I love his commitment and workrate, but Kasey isn't a PL winger.

It’s 6 in 23 playing in an Enzo system that is almost entirely built to cater for the goals and assists from the two wingers.

He still had to pop up in the right areas and put the ball in the back of the net. He scored as many goals as Fatawu in the championship last season with much fewer appearances.

Obviously Fatawu got loads of assists and is a far far better footballer. I'm not suggesting otherwise.

Do you think Maresca would have given him those minutes after the first handful of games if he was that bad? Surely he would have just kicked him to the kerb completely once we had Fatawu and Yunus through the door, like he did with Wanya Marcal.

It's completely random how the chips fall in terms of support for lads that come through the academy.

Kasey is so average yet he seems to get a free pass. Chilwell for example was very good for us but didn't, arguably the same for Barnes. Hamza is somewhere in the middle but splits opinion.

Higher expectations back then perhaps?

He's a bit like a budget Oxlade-Chamberlain, who spent years trying to find his best position, he didn't really have the attributes to fit anywhere. Like him, will probably end up in a mid 3.

Unfortunately the club has a little too much sentimentality for boyhood club players, which clouds their vision. As so many have said before me, and I agree, Kasey is sadly not a Premier League player. For all his endeavour and enthusiasm, he couldn't beat a man against Brighton even if the match lasted three times as long

UNPOPULAR OPINION ALERT:

But the sentimentality issue can also be said for others in the squad. Hamza Choudhury is another one, and Luke Thomas. Neither of these are Premier League quality, yet still remain at the club probably because they are cheap on the wage front.

However, if they are not good enough, move them on for pure profit or simply let them run their contracts out. We are no worse off either way.

I think we have tried to move hamza and Thomas on.  Certainly, they have been out on loan.  It's not sentiment that is keeping them at the club, it is a lack of suitors.

The fans certainly don't share the same sentimentality. You have to go above and beyond to impress these lot or you're a competition winner. Even Barnes was still getting dogs abuse on here after 13 goals.

I think it's more a case that the club haven't had any other option but to give the youth players ever chance to succeed. Mcateer is certainly good enough for the Championship and will do well. No one is thinking Thomas is good enough. I fear for him. Hamza is limited as a player, and if all you're asking him to do is those limited roles, he can do a job as a squad player.

Still feel someone like Jacob Murphy should be a massive inspiration for him. Not an extraordinarily flair player, doesn't show off, but has worked his way up to being a very useful player for a side who can be really good on their day.

Consistency is key for him because McAteer does have a knack of getting into good positions and often doing the basics well.

But if he was taken off and we were down to 10 men, I genuinely don't think anyone would notice, his contribution to the game is negligible. The fact that we have to play both him and JJ on the right effectively shows how short we are on that side.

He needs a full season in the Championship imo. Last season was his breakthrough, had a couple of injuries and never nailed down a starting spot.

We need to get him a loan next season where he is playing every week to help with his physicality and build his confidence.

With regards to best position, I personally think it’s from the left. From the right he never seems sure what to do. Seems a good lad and wouldn’t rule him off just yet. Worth remembering that Enzo and RVN have played him whilst Cooper didn’t - might tell us all something!

His confidence isn’t there at the moment. He is a willing runner which is why Ruud likes him. He gets himself into foot positions and I do think there quite a impactive player in there. He needs to be nurtured though, if we can get a winger through the door in January a loan move would benefit him I think.

He doesn’t look good enough in terms of attacking output but I get where we’ve opted for him given his work rate. However if you watch Brighton’s first goal on Sunday, he doesn’t do that effort to get back against their full back and one unchallenged (and over hit, shit cross) later, it’s a goal

Squad player, has come through the academy, don’t get what people expect? He works hard but of course his short comings relate to in the final third, at least he can improve that part of his game

Let’s not forget he was playing League 2 only a couple of seasons ago. Realistically he’s backup (2nd backup even) on either wing but Ruud has seen something in him that’s got him starting. You’d assume it’s workrate but he’s played his part in us getting 4pts from the last two games so fair play.

Is he good enough to be a starter on the wing? Probably not. Will he ever be? Who knows. But if you’d asked me 2 seasons ago I’d have said League 2 looked his ceiling so hopefully he keeps developing and proving us wrong!

I think he’s a CM playing on the wings.

Has zero nous to beat a FB but has an engine on him.

Comparisons to Sharky are borderline offensive, Sharky was an old fashioned winger who could whip in a cross etc.

I can definitely see why he started being used as a wing back a bit when out on loan

I imagine if he was playing every week he would have the match fitness to be able to get up and down the wing all game as would be required for that kind of role

Expect next summer he probably goes out on loan to mid-table Championship where I think he would do fine
