st albans fox Posted 26 August 2025 Posted 26 August 2025 We may not be under an official embargo but we know that the league will not be giving us any slack when they assess our management accounts. We are also looking at a tribunal at some point to look at our breach 24/25. You’d assume that a club that is clearly showing itself to be spending well within its means on transfers into the club would be looked upon better than one which isn’t. We didn’t overspend last summer when we went back up and we certainly can’t be accused of doing so this summer. The club can rightly point to their contractual obligations from several years ago still weighing them down and that they have learned their lessons moving forwards with evidence of that re last few windows with few incomings.

If their activities are confined to just Josh Brownhill, then they all need firing. Value for money being ignored with bringing in highly paid stop-gaps has got us in part in this PSR position. So this question on recommendations should be addressed to the Club - not me. Brownhill's numbers in the Championship are up there with some of the best I've seen from any midfielder in the division! A global scouting network or not, that should be the driving factor in getting him in! Plus he's on a free! 1

Bluearmyfox28 Posted 26 August 2025 Posted 26 August 2025 With regards to his wages should we offer him £60k a week on a 3 year deal that total package would cost us £9.3m. For context, that’s the equivalent of us signing someone on a £30k a week contract (£4.6m across 3 years) and a transfer fee of £4.7m. Which most would be very happy with. So truthfully from an overall package perspective, I think £60k a week for a free agent is manageable. However, it solely depends on how much he wants as a signing on fee. As that changes the maths considerably. 3

He knows realistically he'd be happy with a signing on fee of around a million and a 50-60k a week salary as it'll gazump anything hes earnt in the past. But he doesn't need to rush it, he knows some clubs will be desperate with the window almost shutting that he can wait, football isnt his priority right now. I can see him going West Ham for about 75k a week, 4 year contract and a couple million signing on. Jackpot for him if he does. 1

The league have no input one transfer or registration business if you’re not under an embargo. The lack of incomings is entirely down to us, it is a decision the board have made, to move X amount of players out before bringing any in. This current situation has nothing to directly do with the EFL, yes they’re likely watching what we’re doing, but this is very much a decision the club have made themselves

Put it into perspective really. Completely agree. There’s two ways of looking at it, 1) our wage structure identifies your role within the squad. Or 2) the overall financial package it would cost the club. Sadly with PSR I think the majority of clubs now work from the second point rather than the first. The one thing I would say though is IF he has a goal/assist return that he has had in his previous 2 championship seasons, then Brownhill would be a key player for us which adds to the perspective.
Bablemikey Posted 26 August 2025 Posted 26 August 2025 No-one in the team should be getting £60k a week in the Championship. I accept that this is a hangover from our Prem seasons, but even in the Prem, none of those listed are worth that level of salary.

I don't think it's possible to look favourably upon a club that spent £20m on Oli Skipp.

honeybradger Posted 26 August 2025 Posted 26 August 2025 I remember when Ryan Fraser got 7 goals 14 assists at PL level and our fans were raving about him due to his stats, ignoring everything else about him. Unsurprisingly he never reached those heights again. This is a similar situation, yes Browhill's numbers are good but the player himself is not particularly good. There's a good chance that he never recreates those numbers he got last season in the championship again, he just doesnt have the record for it. Especially considering he will be at a new club as well I just cannot see him maintaining those numbers. 1

Think it's a side to his game he's developed at this level having previously not been massively creative. He's evidently waiting for a big pay day, i'd only be interested if he badly misjudged it and was available for £30-35k a week on a 2 year deal.

I hate to bang on the xG, xA drum but he massively outperformed in both last season. Say he reverts to 9 goals 3 assists next season would our fans be happy with that output? Only slightly better than Ndidi was for us last time in the championship and that's not even his natural game. There are just so many better, younger, cheaper players available that this transfer just doesnt make sense to me. 1
