Is it better to use this strategy now to stay up, or to do nothing and definitely go down? We are all massively upset and frsutrated at the club. But it doesn't mean that this is a bad move. To be honest, I trust Brightons recruitment more than ours, so if this goes well then maybe we can be regular developers of their talent once we sink down to the champ 4
Heskey2011 Posted 8 August 2024 Posted 8 August 2024 He's not ready, 4 good games last season 2 vs Sheffield United. If we're in the expected relegation scrap, he's got no skin in the game. But then..... 2 minutes ago, Taffy (Glynn) said: People do get awfully precious about "developing players for other teams". That's the way football works unfortunately ; a fundamental part of our model is to develop players for others. Clearly when we sign/own those players we are hoping to turn a profit for our "efforts" ; however, it's simply a game of risk/reward (and seemingly a game we have been losing over the last 3-4 seasons.) For every Fofana or Maddison, who we can bring in, develop and sell on. There is a Soumare or a Daka. By loaning a player, yes you don't stand to make the big profits, but you don't stand to stomach the losses either. The simple fact of the matter is that the club needs to be very careful financially ; we all accept that we will need to end this window with 5/6/7/8 new players. If one or two of those can be brought in at essentially zero financial risk, whilst contributing to us staying up, that's a positive for me. Clearly having an option would be nice, but Brighton are very shrewd - this is a 19 year old, creative, Argentinian international. If he has a good enough season for us (fingers crossed) that would make us want to sign him permanently, then you're looking at a price probably into the £30-50M range, based on that profile. By all accounts, we probably can't afford that anyway. Instead, if he buys us 12 months to continue to refine Alves/Golding etc. so that they can step into the role permanently when he returns (and, particularly, if he helps us stay up), then I can only really see positives. I also see the perspective that if he proves to be good and helps us stay up, then other players will see what he did for us / the role he played / the attention it brought him and will be excited to come and play for us to fill that role. The last season Tielemens was here, all we were doing was developing him for someone else. Same with Soyuncu towards the end of that season. Regardless, you have to make use of the best players you have/you can get your hands on, particularly when you're in a difficult situation. The last time we got promoted, we signed an Argentine midfielder for 12 months, who cost us nothing to sign, made us no profit when he left and I've no complaints about that deal! Very good points. Popular Post slymunn Posted 8 August 2024 Popular Post Posted 8 August 2024 I'm just looking at this deal as a squad place swap with Souttar. A midfield who can chip in with goals and rotate is better than having a 5th or 6th choice centre back. 13

A likely scenario this season is that he shows moments of brilliance and shows a real willingness and determination but ultimately he doesn't deliver on the pitch regularly enough to make a consistent difference but we'll be able to see his potential. So even if that option is say £25m, it's worth negotiating because without it we take all the risk from having him but outside of 38 Premier League games worth, we get none of the reward.

Have I misunderstood their relative situations? Whole heartedly agree.
Popular Post Mark Posted 8 August 2024 Popular Post Posted 8 August 2024 Don't care if its a loan at this point, this is the type of player we're lacking and Brighton have done some great recruitment from South America. He's done more in the Premier league than Carvalho despite being two years younger too. 6

Popular Post Babylon Posted 8 August 2024 Popular Post Posted 8 August 2024 Do we need to keep mentioning "how far we've dropped" every five minutes. Unless someone has been in a coma for two years, I'm fairly sure we're all aware that we aren't at the level we were and it's going to take a fair amount of time to get back there. 13 2 2

In Argentina for Rosario he was on the wing, not a 10 same for Argentina. And he's little we've got enough little players. Look on the Brighton fans forum North Stand Chat. He played 29 times for them last season in the premier league. 1

You'd have thought any DoF worth his salary would have asked about an option to buy given Brighton will have to fund these transfers somehow. They posted £120m profit for 22/23. They can fund transfers.
Mike Oxlong Posted 8 August 2024 Posted 8 August 2024 This is a decent option given we are shopping in Poundland these days

Pick a player direct from South America - Buonanotte's initial fee was just £5.3million supposedly. Low wages, small fee, develop at our benefit Absolutely mad that we haven't signed anyone direct from that continent considering we spent a decade in the top-flight at its most moneyed. You've got Championship sides looking there / Asia now and pulling some really interesting names out of hats for relatively low-risk prices. Some might turn out to be absolute pony but if you snag a gem you're laughing regardless.
