It's ok - Martin was still proud of them.

I mean yes I know managers don't like to hammer   players in public and have to protect them as so many cannot take a ticking off too well but don't look a total fool.

Depends on context - in Martin's case he probably knows his lads aren't good enough to compete at this level - no point in hammering them when they aren't underperforming, they're just crap

There is an importance in keeping possession in this league now. With the intensity around pressing, regardless of where you are in the league, being able to hold the play and dictate is an important skill for every team. We don’t do it well enough at the moment.

However, quoting another “dinosaur” of the game, Big Sam, how can a manager go up against a team who do it better than you simply because they have more resources and think this is the best way to play this game. Saints lost but they got hammered because their coach and captain were both idiots.

Keeping possession when teams are more inclined to press with intensity doesn't compute with me. I was under the impression that the possession obsessed was to draw out teams that want to sit in and counter.

If teams are willing to press, I don't want possession, I want direct forward balls played into the massive gaps the opposition are leaving.

I remember Enzo saying (in so many word anyway)  last season that sometimes we kept possession in order to rest. So I guess literally possession for possession sake.

So it's not always about drawing teams out. But then again, as you say,  that only works if there's no press

Ruud said basically the same in his post match interview too.

Or you keep the ball despite the press

that tires out the opposition.  My view of possession is that having it opens up the game for you later on if the opponent is chasing. We did it a fair bit under rodgers (not 22/23).   If the opposition just sit off you and allow you to keep it then it’s pretty  pointless

West Ham are giving Julen one more game. Might be to buy time for them to get someone in, weird one though, they might well win and then it just looks odd.

I know our players get stick for having the ear of the owner, but it amazes me Sullivan and co couldn't see how dissinterested the players were on Tuesday.

They litterally had to send out the fitness coach to tell the players to warm up rather than chatting to our lads. He gave them a bollocking and then as soon as his back turned Antonio just stopped warming up again and chatted to Mav lol

Another example, AWB was getting instructions shouted at him and he kept saying "what, what, what" and eventually just shrugged and gave up.

They don't understand him and they don't like him!

Even if they win their next two games you can tell long-term that it just won't work there for Lopetegui.

Looking at Wolves and their ownership it looks a tad complex, also interesting as to what they'll do with o Neill and transfers in January.  Looks like they can't (chinese government) or won't invest anymore. They're basically looking for break even each year so will likely be in the scrap all season.

They had 30 + shots on goal. I'm glad they weren't interested in that case.

At least we sacked Cooper before we were (publicly) talking to other candidates, really grubby seeing rumours of Potter etc being spoken to when O'Neil and Lopetegui are still in situ, shameful stuff.

People always talk about the importance of succession planning and that's part of it. Be pretty stupid to sack a manager without having any idea whether or not the replacements you've got in mind are actually interested.

Southampton already look gone for me. They're nowhere near it and I don't even think a change of manager would help, if they can even get a decent boss in when they're rock bottom with 5 points from 42.

They're in a tricky situation as to what decision they should make. They're not completely out of the fight yet so you think that maybe they make the change to give themselves a chance. On the other hand, it's going to take something big to turn this around and Martin is probably better equipped than most to get them out of the championship.

If you're a Southampton fan, then you probably want a change. Even with relegation looking likely, you don't want it to be completely humiliating.

You're right - Leicester would NEVER do that...
