I’d argue Qatar was the only Southgate tournament we didn’t rely on freak luck

2024 was basically a repeat of Euro 2016 with freakish luck

Agree 100%. I strangely think the level of performance in 2022 was probably the highest Southgate delivered despite it being the earliest we went out, and 2024 was the opposite - the furthest we went but the worst performance. He had insane fortune with draws.

Us winning the euros last year would’ve been an insane heist. Outplayed by Slovakia and Switzerland in the knockouts. In fairness we deserved the Dutch win but the best team won the final, we couldn’t luck it through.

Don’t think this is strange if you actually analyse the game tbh

Went toe to toe with France in 2022 in that quarter and had only one bad performance against the states

2024 on the other hand the only half decent performance was in the semi

3 or 4 nil in that final wouldn’t have flattered Spain

I didn’t think they could give handball if it’s not by the goal scorer ?

I thought if it led directly to a goal then it doesn’t have to be deliberate

But that may have changed to be the goal scorer

either way I thought it was shirt sleeve and PL wouldn’t have given it

madueke is way too greedy
tuchel makes Southgate look like ardlles or prime ‘Newcastle’ keegan

Early days, but not seeing anything of how Tuchel wants England to play. I've got a feeling this tenure won't last long. Not because we're losing to Senegal in a meaningless friendly, but because nothing about this arrangement looks or feels right at the moment.

They probably don’t really know either !

Doesn’t excuse the performance but still seemed harsh .

I think as soon as he was given a one tournament contract it was clear England just wanted someone to fill a gap until another candidate (I imagine Howe) is available.

They probably thought with Tuchel there was at least the chance of going deep in a tournament with his experience.

The squad selections have been worse than anything Southgate served up in his final year

Nah, the 2018 world cup was not 'freak luck'. The team we had really wasn't very good at all. We lost in extra time in the semi final to a team that had better players. Croatia had genuinely world class central midfielders in Rakitic and Modric. England had Henderson, Alli and Lingard.

The draw was favourable, sure. However, how often have we seen England teams in the past previous years look rubbish against supposedly inferior opposition?Maybe I'm just si used to disappointment that I don't take beating lesser sides for granted.

Southgate in?

He will go down as one of England's best managers.  I don't think he did much wrong with England tbf.

Embarrassing from England. We seem to lose far more home games than we used to.

Senegal are a good and fun team to watch. Thought they fully deserved the win.
