I think time will prove he’s a fantastic keeper. Lots of good players have been chewed up at West Ham.

£15m was a poor deal, Trafford went for double that.

Wasn't it £20m?

I recall going into last season dubious about Hermansen as I just didn’t recall him making any game winning contributions in our Championship season, in the sense a GK should.

Literally the first game he played for us against Cov? There'll be more I'm sure.

It was £20m.  If it was £30m and we spent £10m on a replacement, nobody would have griped over the fee.  The fact that we ended up with £20m and didn't have to buy a replacement, for some reason wasn't taken into account by those complaining.

Some people do under and overate players. He was the main reason we weren't in the relegation zone under Cooper. He made some good saves. He could do a good job in the Premier League for the right team.

He's a good shot stopper, is good with the ball at his feet. But he lacks height and physical presence.

Going to a team like West Ham was always a risk. Badly run and fans that can turn toxic very quickly. And as a keeper it's always your fault and he had no credit in the bank with their fans.

Surprised how many people think he's only "average". Clearly very talented and a few months of bad form in bad teams doesn't change that.

Yeah but he left so we have to have this thread exist forever so we can call him shit to cope.

For... reasons?

Kasper, Iker Casillas, Yann Sommer and many more. It’s more about confidence than it is about height.

He had confidence in 23/24, started 24/25 confident and played well, got injured then came back probably with less confidence and didn’t perform as well. No pre-season 25/26 and being thrown in the deep end must have been hard for him.

He’s got the talent - I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s West Ham’s number 1 by the end of the season or going into next season.

A lot of mental gymnastics being on display in this thread.

Mads was class until his injury, he has the same issue that Kasper had with his commanding of the 6 yard box.

However, he is quality and will be Denmark’s number 1, once Kasper hangs up his gloves.

Got enough gk cover. That money needs to go on a striker!

Aside from Hermansen is better than any goalkeeper we currently have. Even if we paid £15m back to West Ham for him (which I know will not happen) then it's a good move for us, especially considering he is only 25.

Always liked Mads and think given the right set up he'd flourish. It's hard being a goalkeeper for team at the bottom of the premier league. Surely being treated like a scapegoat by Nuno. West Ham are relegation fodder anyway, it isn't like the the other players are helping him out. I'd have him back for sure if that was an option. Loan maybe until the end of the season?

The Macquarie loan indicated that it could be nearer 15m.

I wouldnt take him back on the basis there is no guarantee he rediscovers his form after the injuries and what has likely been a confidence destroying experience at West Ham.

We have the best goalkeeper in the championship anyway, no need to spend money on a new one.

I’m not sure what to make of him.

I think sections of our fan base massively overrate players who are good on the ball, even if it is not their primary job (GK and defenders) and when they aren’t doing their primary job right (Vestergaard/Faes).

I recall going into last season dubious about Hermansen as I just didn’t recall him making any game winning contributions in our Championship season, in the sense a GK should. Think Schmeichel time and time again. Obviously got pelters on here as he was the best keeper ever and going for £70mill!

But then he did show that side in the early part of the season, Arsenal away sticks out. So I thought, yeah, he can actually shot stop as well. I never thought he was good at commanding his area mind.

And now it’s gone wrong for him. Was the shot stopping ability shown early last season a purple patch? Or is it external factors, injuries and a bad transfer? Confidence in the drain? Really hard to tell.

it would have taken about 5 minutes watching the season highlights in match order to find one, the save from Simms on opening day to stop cov going 2-0 up...

He was a top keeper in the championship

He used to go from a top young talent to ultra sh*te in the matter of 1 game on here. If I remember rightly, he was pretty good until his injury last season. Maybe being injured gave him too much time to think about going back between the sticks with our bombscare defence, he probably has PTSD.

Coventry opening day, Norwich away just off the top of my head. Made some great saves against Stoke away too but we won that one comfortably.

I was not actually being intentionally critical at all. I perhaps should have put ‘many’ rather than ‘any’.

My point was, I find it hard to know what his level is/could be. I did say that his shot stopping in the early part of the PL season impressed me. He went to crap after and since his move but again, I did say it is hard to know if we saw a purple patch or if it is a combination of confidence, injuries, poor transfer. I suspect yes, much of the latter. But also a bit overrated by some of our fans due to the ball playing ability wooing people. I suspect he is a decent top flight keeper.

He does have a glaring weakness with controlling his area and dominating. But this was Kasper’s weakness too. I suspect his mentality might hold him back as well as he doesn’t seem very confident. You need that as a top keeper I think. And by mentality, I am not saying he wasn’t a ‘good egg’ which he is, just that confident, winning mentality.

In terms of the games pointed out, as I said at the start, any was harsh wording I accept. I think it also depends how we perceive things individually. I remember often feeling the finishing was poor in that league and therefore would see a save as ‘expected’. Others might see the same save as really good I guess.

I mean after Ward, it was just good to see that the shots on target for the opposition want equal to goal conceded for us!

He was a very, very good keeper for us. Surprised at how badly it went for him at West Ham, conceded more dodgy goals in about 3 games there than he did for us in 2 years. I'm sure he'll kick on again once he finds a decent new home.

Think we were spoilt having Kasper in goal for a decade. Just wasn't a position we needed to even think about for a long time.

Not sure about the best GK in the Championship. He has made quite a few howlers already and to be honest I never feel confident that he hasn't got one in him every game we play. He has made some decent stops though to be fair. Good keeper but certainly not the best fir me.
