FIFA World Cup - USA, Mexico, Canada - Mooted Boycott

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I know we have a topic on the World Cup but that part of the forum has about as many visitors as the Moon.

Some muted suggestions that larger UEFA based countries are considering a boycott of the World Cup, depending on how the Greenland situation plays out.

This would be a major stance if true, considering the last two were held in Russia and Qatar, both which drew major controversy.

As long as the fans got a football tournament, I don’t think they get the backlash of boycotting.

If UEFA could pull together an invitational tournament at pace, hosted throughout Europe, then it’s possible. At the same time, it also applies pressure to FIFA who they have a strained relationship with anyway.

Still Find it hilarious that FIFA gave Trump a peace prize. It’s got to be somewhat embarrassing for them at this point, surely?

I honestly don't think they give a shit about how it looks. They are purely chasing money and will continue to do so - and effectively whoring themselves out to the highest bidders to boost their coffers.

I would welcome a boycott if it's collective and damaging for the US and ultimately makes Trump think - but I think too many federations in Europe (inc. the FA) are too wimpish to do something like this. Again, purely down to the money and knowing how much the US will impact this it they did back a boycott.

I was thinking about this yesterday.

UEFA could persuade as many of its teams that have qualified to pull out and take part in an impromptu Euros and fill the gaps with the UEFA teams with the next highest FIFA rankings.

The tournament could be held across the continent like the Euro 2020 edition (in 2021 because of Covid), which would mitigate against the sudden costs being incurred by one or two countries.

Easy peasy.

This is sort of how I saw it.

However, they then extend it out to the other nations that qualified as well, to really stick the knife into FIFA.

Trump could Nuke Greenland and infantino would kiss his arse.

Would be good to see, but FIFA will throw their toys out and threaten such crazy sanctions if UEFA did boycott it would mess up any countries from Nations League Group B down.

Literally couldn't give a toss about the FIFA moneygrab, aka World Cup.

UEFA are just as bad as FIFA and won't rock the boat that much unless there's political pressure applied as a collective so that they can say that they had no choice.

Absolutely no chance anyone will boycott, the contracts with various commercial partners will be ironclad. No one, including everyone on this thread, morals are that high when your wage is at stake.
Just switch off, pay it and it’s partners no attention. Don’t click on any media stories. If you wanna watch games do so via iptv so you don’t add to viewing figures

Exactly, it’s just pearl clutching. There are many reasons to boycott FIFA events, if they suddenly start now then quite frankly they’re pathetic. And they won’t because this will be the most lucrative event in football history and money always wins.

I think the closest you would get is players "withdrawing" from the squads  but they won't. It might be unfair to put that on them but if it were me, I wouldnt go.

Too many booty hole lickers won't allow it.

Honestly, as a Canadian i'd  say fans (who have tickets to live games) should vote with their feet and not show up. Also, that won't happen because of the costs involved and personal reasons.

Again, likely unfair to fans as they never asked for any of this. It is all FIFA and Trumps fault.

Infantino is a terrible leader and should be flown to mars with Trump and his goons.

I’m an avid collector and wearer of New Balance trainers and I recently made the decision to stop buying any of the Made In USA variants of their shoes, as a protest against the country of America. I’ll wait and see how this affects their sales figures going forward

Safe to stay most of the European nations as well Australia and New Zealand would pull out, which of course be massive dent on tickets sales on the world cup. But I couldn't see the likes of the South American, African and Asia would still attend in great numbers, I don't think Trump would give a damn in fact he'd welcome it. He'd be like more chance of the USA going further. For Fifa it would cause a massive headache it terms of the numbers and forcing a restructure of the tournament.

In fact imagine in Trump's twisted world he'd probably be stupid to welcome Russia into the world cup taking the place of one of the boycotted nations.

Not 1 country who is there will boycott, it's bollocks.

This is all likelihood true, but everyone needs to remember the correct reason for that; the football associations involved have no bollocks.

I think most of the third world crooks that make up FIFA are unembarrassable

We all thought Blatter was a total crook, Infantino is another level.

The chasing of money on every level in Football, just makes it worse and worse and worse.

PLEASE don't mention the beautiful game.

Can't we just have some administrators that actually care about the health of the players and the fans.

Sadly the only reason the the world cup now exists is  $$$$$$$$$$.

The players no longer care, the fans seem mostly meh and put it behind club footy.

BUT!

FIFA loves $$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I would love it if the major Euro and South American nations said... nope, not going!

I think a World Cup boycott achieves nothing. Think of the Canadian and Mexican hosts cities, or both respective countries. And I'm sure their US counterparts are looking forward to the WC.

They'd be punished for what?

I've applied for a ticket through the lottery. Going to a World Cup would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me, as it sure would be for any other football fan.

Imagine if the roles were reversed, and the world would be talking about boycotting a World Cup in the UK.

Why would the common people have to pay the price for a decision somebody else made?

Just because you don't like the US government or FIFA (I'm not a big fan of either of them), doesn't mean one of the biggest sports events has to be cancelled.

The outrage is also rather one-sided and reactionary. And again, it has shades of virtue-signaling.

Where are the voices opposing WC 2030 in Saudi Arabia? They seem to have a particular human rights record. Ahem.

Where was the resistance for Russia 2018 or Qatar 2022, for that matter?

Where was the resistance back in 2018 when the winning bid was announced, when Trump was in charge the first time?

Would have rather seen the World Cup go to Morocco instead?

If you wanted to boycott, you'd simply not go or not purchase tickets. Or not bother.

You can always go the "democratic" way and try and achieve change within the US or FIFA, for what it's worth.
