At least we have got him and his staff done in decent time to have a proper pre season.

I am 100% with you on this. I think he's an egotistical arrogant ****, but I am totally on board with him developing this mentality, ethos and ensuring the players are punctual. I'm glad he's given Sadler and Hughes the boot too.

Rangers aside, I do think everywhere hes been players like him, the issue has never been about players running for him, but the approach to football he is wedded to at all costs ultimately doesnt lead to results. Hes had 1 decent season at Southampton in what 5+ years of managing and the fans wanted him gone after the first handful of games because of the football.

 

I really do hope we are the club that it all just clicks into place for him. But I have serious doubts.

Most of these players haven't been fit for two seasons. We'll be hearing some push back soon if they are expected to be running and training hard.

You’ll win the league/get promoted this season. But that would be the equivalent achievement of Celtic finishing 1st or 2nd. It’s more difficult to fail than pass.

 

If you want someone to stabilise you as a midtable Championship team playing stale football. He’ll be fine. 

 

However, if you want to progress year on year, he’ll need binning. Keep him for the duration of his contract, get yourself stable on and off the pitch and then bring someone new and progressive in without needing to pay him off.*
 

*This assumes you did the sensible thing and gave him a maximum 3 year deal.

Their players that season were very superior to every team except us - and they nearly bottled it too. 

I've never seen a manager so wedded to one single philosophy regardless of what the opposition were doing.

 

That PL season where Southampton nearly beat Derby's season, halfway into the season they had the 3rd highest possession and their CB, Jan Bednerak, a veteran of two 0-9 defeats had the 2nd highest possession % in the league. Dogshit football.

Shouldn't think there's a Manager or Coach in all four divisions and any semi-pro side that doesn't say that sort of thing on the first day back training. As always, the proof of the pudding is in the eating.

I'm Martin's number 1 hater, so I'm being massively bias, I acknowledge that but I'm a bit obsessed with the fact that his career is entirely based around 25 games. 

He came 4th with a relegated side and then the 3 promoted teams resulting in the worst performance in Premier League history, it wasn't exactly a tough division that season and they fell apart at the end of that season. 

I actually don't have an issue at all with possession football, I have an issue with him being a bad manager. Since January 2024 (so this includes half his promotion season) he's won 17 games in 53, a win rate of 32%, Marti was sacked with 36%. During our worst ever season our manager had a better win rate than Russell Martin has over the last 2 and a half years.
