Leicester City Confirm Updates To First Team Coaching Staff

Hourihane joins us as Assistant Manager, working alongside First Team Manager Russell Martin going into the new 2026/27 Sky Bet League One season.

A former Republic of Ireland international, Hourihane brings extensive experience from across the English game for clubs including Sunderland, Ipswich Town, Aston Villa, Swansea City, Sheffield United, Derby County and Barnsley – where he had spells as a player and manager.

Owen has been appointed as Fitness Coach supporting the preparation of the First Team squad. He brings significant experience in physical performance and conditioning and has previously worked alongside Russell for Norwich City, Swansea City, Southampton and Rangers.

Meanwhile, Adam Sadler’s second spell as part of First Team coaching staff will conclude at the end of his contract this summer. Adam, who has previously worked with our First Team over a nine-year spell between 2014 and 2023 agreed a short-term contract last season to support the Club until the end of the 2025/26 campaign.

Also departing is First Team Set Piece Coach Andy Hughes, who joined us in the summer of 2024 from Norwich City.

We welcome all new staff to Leicester City and offer our thanks and best wishes to Adam and Andy for their hard work and efforts as they depart for the next chapter in their respective careers.

Amazing news that Andy Hughes has finally gone. Did we not have a fitness coach before as no mention of one leaving? Fitness and set pieces were 2 of our biggest issues last season. We were horrific at defending and attacking set pieces and the fitness levels were the worst I've ever seen. These lot made Ian Marshall look fit.

Isn’t / wasn’t Matt Reeves head of conditioning or some such other bullshit title?

Should be sacked as well.

Hourihane seems to be a decent couple, whether he'd have enough sway for Brussell to take advice from him remains to be seen but then again Gill didn't seem able to either with vast experience.

Seems Kingy is bulletproof 👀

Tbf as a coach he's basically just there to run the players through drills so not a huge issue as long as he has limited input towards tactics. Plus he's a good bloke who will want to change the culture so hopefully his attitude will rub off on the youngsters.

Andy Hughes being gone is the best news all summer. I can't think of one simple positive he brought to the club other than being a relatively nice bloke.

At Portsmouth I spoke to him and asked why we kept persisting with Luke Thomas' long throws as they were so painfully ineffective.

He said he didn't know.

The next game we did exactly the same again.

Yeah Kingy has a bit of credit left in the bank despite being part of that mess last season

Hopefully having been a gaffer previously in the division he’ll see the games a different way, with Gill as No2 I think it’d have been ‘remember what we’ve always done Russ’

His Barnsley team got their better results with high intensity and the add DKD link hopefully could help us get him in too

Some genuine positive news from the club. Also given how negative opinions of Martin generally are, surely the fact that Gill isn’t coming with him having followed him everywhere previously is good news?

I prefer the thought of Martin + Hourihane compared to Martin + Gill, even if it is just because it’s slightly more of an unknown.
