cc_star Posted 30 August 2012 Posted 30 August 2012 Nugent+Vardy with Waggy+Schlupp as backup and Fuctas as 'plan B' 5 forwards is plenty any more and it's crowded and someone is unhappy & unhappiness is a cancer that spreads through the squad Despite personally not thinking much of Beckford I actually think Sclupp has some growing to to do before he is around that level and I would have kept Beckford until Jan & loaned Schlupp out to a top Lg1 side and then weighed the situation up in time for the January window with a view to selling JB & brining Schlupp into our own matchday squad. The only fly in the ointment is the unknown quantity of money, whether we need to reduce the ongoing burden of Premiership-level wages & need the resale value before it erodes to nothing through not being a first choice starter... There is also the question of unhappiness and discontent so perhaps despite my feelings above of Schlupp not being ready that it is still the better thing to do.
kingfox Posted 30 August 2012 Posted 30 August 2012 Our depth is vastly superior to that of last year already. Again, nobody was panicing last year to my memory. How do you work that one out, we had about 35 players at the end of last season, to how many now 23, some leave tomorrow it could be below 20. And saying we only had Howard and Schlupp as back-up, have you forgot about Vassell and Delfouneso? We had depth in all positions last season, but this season we lack depth in defence and we will lack depth in the forwards if Beckford goes and is not replaced.
Happy Fox Posted 30 August 2012 Posted 30 August 2012 Being a big name player, doesn't make you a great player, I think Sven's signings proved that pretty well. People who suggest players are fantastic because they're 'big names' is really annoying. He hasn't had a chance to do well since his loan spell, being either injured, played on the wing or used as a sub with little time to make an impact. That Leeds game was one of his few starts, give the kid a break with the Burnley game FFS, he was coming back from injury as a sub without a great deal of time to make an impact. NP isn't giving him a chance doesn't that tell its own story do you really expect him to feature above the likes of Nugent, Vardy, Futacs and Schlupp not for me.
Tielemans63 Posted 30 August 2012 Posted 30 August 2012 Loving the Waghorn / Beckford debate. It's like comparing faeces with poo.
Mark_w Posted 30 August 2012 Posted 30 August 2012 And saying we only had Howard and Schlupp as back-up, have you forgot about Vassell and Delfouneso? One was injured for most of the season, one we only had for a few weeks, so his point still stands. NP isn't giving him a chance doesn't that tell its own story do you really expect him to feature above the likes of Nugent, Vardy, Futacs and Schlupp not for me. Futacs will only be used in certain games and I do think Waggy should be ahead of Schlupp, so yes I can see him being 3rd/4th choice. One injury like Fryatt in the year we finished 5th and I'd expect him to get his chance.

We are talking upfront stop switching it to the whole squad! Vassell was injured almost all season as was Waghorn. Delfonso was here for a few games when Schlupp got injured was he not? Last years options were Nugent, Beckford, Schlupp, Howard. Does Howard even count as an actual option? This year we have Nugent, Vardy, Beckford, Fuctss, Schlupp, Waghorn. Even losing Beckford (big name or not) the options are superior to what they were. If he'd looked capable of hitting 20 league goals in a season I'd agree. I repeat though, I would prefer a replacement. But no way would we suddenly be fooked. This year we currently

Leicesterpool Posted 30 August 2012 Posted 30 August 2012 I'd rather keep Beckford he was outstanding in the pre-season. Waghorn should go plus schlupp on loan.
Babylon Posted 30 August 2012 Posted 30 August 2012 Well we could well be if Beckford goes and we don't replace him!!!! On my phone so you'll have to forgive random words!!

This year we currently My fooked comment was over the top, I was frustrated But I think we would need a replacement for Beckford, don't care what Mark said he is a big named player, a goalscorer, former Premier League player, yes things haven't worked out for him, but people would expect us to get in a replacement for Beckford. Is Waghorn even an option this season, forget giving him a chance people come on as subs to try and make an impact and loads of players have been successful at doing it, Waghorn however has done seriously little when coming from the bench. You seem to be ignoring my depth comment aswell, would you really be happy with just 19-20 players I certainly wouldn't be, Portsmouth will have the same amount of players than us. Gallagher won't need replacing, but St Ledger would plus we really need another defender as back-up to Konchesky, then as Whitbread is injury prone it will then leave us with Morgan and Moore again with no potential back-up. Our defence lacks depth, on the wing we look good, our back-up in central midfield looks ok but not the best, while up front we would have five players if Waggy or Schlupp don't leave on loan or something, those two are not good enough for this football club at this moment in time.
Captain... Posted 30 August 2012 Posted 30 August 2012 Waghorn has never been better than average, and is now worse than he was. Why do people still talk about how good players used to be and see it as a good enough reason to still keep them. We could get a fairly decent wedge for Waghorn because he is still in the U21 team, but his value will diminish when people realise he has passed his peak. He will not get better. Not saying waghorn is better than Becks, but I just get so sick of all this shit he gets especially from people who don't know enough about football to even know what league he played in for us. He has barely played for a year, he is not going to be sharp and by all accounts he wasn't that bad against Burton, better than some others. If Beckford does go we still have more than enough attacking options, including an England under 21 international or 2. That is not a bad situation to be in.
Steve Agnew Posted 30 August 2012 Posted 30 August 2012 never judge a player on pre-season Not that long ago you were saying Beckford was Everton's best striker. Have you changed your tune now?
Guest ttfn Posted 30 August 2012 Posted 30 August 2012 I'd rather keep Beckford he was outstanding in the pre-season. You seem to have an extraordinarily low threshold for describing something as "outstanding".
TrentFox Posted 30 August 2012 Posted 30 August 2012 I think Beckford is massively overrated by most people. I don't think we will need to replace him. I think we already have with Vardy, who I think could be a far better player. I don't think Gallagher would have had many appearances this season. It won't be important to replace him. I do think we will need another defender, though. Maybe even two if SSL leaves. Nugent+Vardy with Waggy+Schlupp as backup and Fuctas as 'plan B' 5 forwards is plenty any more and it's crowded and someone is unhappy & unhappiness is a cancer that spreads through the squad Despite personally not thinking much of Beckford I actually think Sclupp has some growing to to do before he is around that level and I would have kept Beckford until Jan & loaned Schlupp out to a top Lg1 side and then weighed the situation up in time for the January window with a view to selling JB & brining Schlupp into our own matchday squad. These two posts seem to have covered it for me. But I doubt that will stop there being another ten pages before tomorrow evening is out ! (He says, contributing almost half a page himself)!

I'm not ignoring it, it just wasn't relevant to what we were taking about. If we sell SSL then a player will come in, without question. Until players go (they may not) and we see if anyone comes in (they might) it's hardly worth worrying about. I reckon this would come back to haunt us. If he goes elsewhere and scores it doesn't mean he would here.

bmt Posted 30 August 2012 Posted 30 August 2012 If he goes elsewhere and scores it doesn't mean he would here. No maybe not, I've seen enough to think he could score a lot here though. But I meant he'll come to the KP and score 3 or 4 to piss us off.
Babylon Posted 30 August 2012 Posted 30 August 2012 Alright lets calm down a bit, but at this rate I can see myself fuming by 10.30 tomorrow night. The loan window will still be open though.
kingfox Posted 30 August 2012 Posted 30 August 2012 The loan window will still be open though. Rather get in some permanent signings, how long will these loan signings be for? Maybe 6 months, going by the Shotton rumour.
LCFC_FAN_1995 Posted 30 August 2012 Posted 30 August 2012 Wouldn't surprise me if he left though to a club before the transfer deadline
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 30 August 2012 Posted 30 August 2012 Get rid of Waghorn. He is a bloody millstone. If we let Beckford go without replacing him adequately then that will be a massive error of judgement imo.
