1990-91:Tony James scores the winner v Oxford as we stay up on the last day of the season

2014-15: Matty James scores the winner v QPR as we stay up on the last day of the season?

I'm calling it.

Literally only on FoxesTalk....

Last season the bottom 4 looked like this;

17 West Bromwich Albion −16 36
18 Norwich City ® −34 33
19 Fulham ® −45 32
20 Cardiff City ® −42 30

Meaning that to stay up you needed to have 33 points and a -33 goal difference or better. (or -34 and a better head to head record against Norwich)

West Brom's total is irrelevant because to stay up you just have to do better than 18th place.

So if Norwich scored one more goal they would have stayed up?

And it was West Brom who we sent down that day! It's written - and honestly speaking, I think they may struggle to get more than one point from their last six on today's showing. We could repeat history if we can pick up 3 more wins.

Hull are down and out, Sunderland look woeful and QPR and Burnley don't look much of a threat. we are gonna do this!!!

I agree on the first two, but it's all to play for between us, QPR and Burnley for the remaining drop spot. QPR have winnable home games against West Ham and Newcastle before playing us on the final day. Burnley are playing teams who are either winding down the season or in the mire with them (ourselves and Villa)

After our last two games though and looking at our run-in, we have a great chance. The only game you'd be tempted to write off really is the Chelsea game, whereas QPR play Chelsea tomorrow and have still to travel to Liverpool and Man City.

Based on the run-ins; I'd say Hull and Sunderland are in serious trouble, and QPR have a lot of hard work to avoid joining them.

Indeed.

I didn't realise how awful their run-in was.

Palace (a), Liverpool (h), Man Utd (a), Newcastle (a), Chelsea (h), Arsenal (a)

It's very conceivable that they could get 0 points from that run-in. I remember reading something saying that they needed to be safe by Easter, or they were in serious trouble. With Palace absolutely resurgent, Liverpool fighting to play in Europe and three of the other four being pretty much non-starters, they're essentially dependent on getting something at Newcastle, and St. James isn't the easiest place to go.

They'll grind out a couple of 0-0s and all will be well in Pulisland

reckon we should change this to the "mid table run-in thread" cos we ain't even in a relegation fight anymore

I think they could get a point at home against Liverpool and possibly at Newcastle. Doubt they'll win again this season.

Look at it this way if norwich had 2 extra points would they have stayed up?

That is the position we want 17th not 18th.

17th is the safety position

Everyone is aware we need to be 17th, but to be in that position you need to beat the points of 18th, 19th and 20th. If you best the points of the team in 17th you end up 16th.

West Brom are definitely in this relegation Scrap would say that Aston Villa have probably done enough now to stay up.

For me Hull and Sunderland have hit the buffers cannot see them picking up more points than us from our remaining games.

So it's a question of whether Burnley or QPR have, I think QPR will pip Burnley imo.

Ok, look at this way then, look at the table now you are saying we just need to beat QPR's points tally and that will keep us up because they are 18th?....

Well it won't will it? We need to beat hull's who are 17th

That's because we are bottom of the league so have to climb 3 teams. Your point about last season only makes sense if we replace whoever was bottom of that league.

Without wanting to state the obvious, we need to beat the points score of the 18th placed team after 38 games.

Whether that team is Hull or QPR who knows - the optimist in me says a bottom three of Burnley, Hull and QPR

Sunderland      -23   38

Aston Villa        -21   35

West Brom       -18   33

Leicester City   -18   33

Hull City           -19    32

QPR                -20    31

Burnley FC       -24    30

Final Table prediction ;)

Relies on us beating both QPR and Burnley. Lose to Sunderland. Draw against Swansea and Newcastle.

(I had some nice tables on results etc but forum decided to unformat it all so I removed it ...sorry!)
