AjcW Posted 1 September 2015 Posted 1 September 2015 A little trend over the last couple of transfer windows has seen some really odd signings, ones that just don't make sense, and today was no exception. Michael Hector - 23, joined Chelsea today, the champions of the premier league, from his club reading for £4 million pounds. He was then immediately loaned back to Reading for the rest of the season. Something of course quite common now, but not so much with someone already 23 years old. When the news broke many observers of the championship were surprised, mainly due to Hectors apparent lack of exceptional defensive talent, yes he's okay, but he's not 'sign for the league champions' good. At first, before the loan back was announced, it seemed that Chelsea were doing this to fill a home grown space, but it turned out that wasn't so. If Chelsea had done the same today with Readings Aaron Kuhl I wouldn't have been surprised, he's highly rated and young etc etc. I suppose the question is does anyone think deals like this and others of similar ilk are done as favours, or as ways of helping sign future players from a club? Or for any other slightly more obscure reasons? Or... Is it simply that Steve Clarke thinks this lad is going to somehow become brilliant within two years and wanted his mate Mourinho to have him? Thoughts on this and any others that have stood out for you over the years........
Wymsey Posted 1 September 2015 Posted 1 September 2015 Maschanero (sp?) and Tevez at West Ham. Was very out of the blue, and didn't work for them there or for West Ham.
StanSP Posted 1 September 2015 Posted 1 September 2015 Derby County becoming Derby City... https://vine.co/v/eI3lEgHxPEt
Jordan Posted 1 September 2015 Posted 1 September 2015 One could dump a truck load of Harry Redknapp transfers into this thread.
Swarles Barkley Posted 1 September 2015 Posted 1 September 2015 Martial for 36mil is not only weird but screams of panic buy
J.Lisemore Posted 2 September 2015 Posted 2 September 2015 Chalobah to Napoli. Their coach has never heard of him, If he makes an appearance for them I'll be very surprised.
Jon the Hat Posted 2 September 2015 Posted 2 September 2015 Martial for 36mil is not only weird but screams of panic buy The price is a little high, but the player is clearly a talent. Not that weird.
Aus Fox Posted 2 September 2015 Posted 2 September 2015 Maschanero (sp?) and Tevez at West Ham. Was very out of the blue, and didn't work for them there or for West Ham. Didn't work out for either apart from keeping West Ham in the Premier League and getting both players away from their 3rd party deals and multimillion pound contracts to massive premier league clubs? Back on topic didn't Man Utd sign a similar player from obscurity on deadline day too?
Captain... Posted 2 September 2015 Posted 2 September 2015 There have been some crazy deals this summer, Man City spent £11m on some Fulham player, Patrick Roberts, who? 19 games no goals? Then there is Chelsea and Spurs, buying players and selling them without ever giving them a chance, Stambouli for Spurs and Felipe Luis at Chelsea, at least Spurs made a profit. I also see Victor Moses is on another season long loan. It's not just the big boys, Swansea and Michu is another weird situation, Swansea don't seem fussed about selling him, and refused offers that didn't match their valuation, but have no intention of playing him. Watford have signed 15 players???? That is just insane, they do know they can only play 11 at a time. There is so much money sloshing around football, that it must be so easy to make a little bit here and there with a few dodgy deals and kick backs, you look at some of these transfers and they make no sense from a footballing perspective there must be some other reason.
Focks Posted 2 September 2015 Posted 2 September 2015 Some kind of favour to Steve Clarke by the sounds of it.. He gets to keep the player and gets the £4m The must be something in it for Chelsea though, probably first dibs on Readings youth team

Apparently it's because he only had 2 years left on his contract and they'll want to sell him next summer. Since he joined Chelsea in 2012 he's made 23 appearances for them and this will be his 3rd season long loan.

Some kind of favour to Steve Clarke by the sounds of it.. However the oracle that is Martin Allen has said he thinks Chelsea have tried to do a carbon copy of Everton buying John Stones with this hector transfer, but if that's the case then why is he loaned back?
Nalis Posted 2 September 2015 Posted 2 September 2015 Wouldnt expect anything less from Chelsea as this is effectively Chelsea's transfer policy 1- Buy a shitload of young and promising players on the cheap with no intention of developing them as Chelsea players. 2 - Loan most of them out for the majority of their contracts in order to gain much exposure/hype as possible. 3- After that experience, sell them on for a profit and use those funds to comply with FFP / buy some Atletico Madrid player for £40m. 4 -Repeat steps 1 - 3.
RedHux Posted 2 September 2015 Posted 2 September 2015 This is true, they must make a profit on loan fees alone on some of the youngsters they hoover up and that's before the inevitable flogging.
Ric Flair Posted 2 September 2015 Posted 2 September 2015 Hasn't Hector only made a couple of starts for a very mediocre Championship club? I'm astounded given his age, this is a moronic transfer and he'll never get a sniff at Chelsea, probably wouldn't even make their reserve team. Weird.

But then, it's not exactly unheard of in this day and age that transfers are made for non-footballing reasons.
shen Posted 2 September 2015 Posted 2 September 2015 Also, Joleon Lescott going to WBAs bitter rivals was a shock move for me. I thought he was pretty good for them last season? What gives?
KFS Posted 2 September 2015 Posted 2 September 2015 Draxler was a weird one yesterday, not many have picked up on it!
shen Posted 2 September 2015 Posted 2 September 2015 Draxler was a weird one yesterday, not many have picked up on it! Why was it weird? Wolfsburg sell De Bruyne, buy Draxler as a replacement for what's likely to be a huge sum. Only surprise is that Schalke would sell to a rival really.
The Horse's Mouth Posted 2 September 2015 Posted 2 September 2015 Berbatov to Fulham really surprised me, a player of that calibre should never turn up at a dump like that, the lucky bastards
