Drove a Renault Clio for the weekend, surprisingly entertaining and a smooth drive. You sit a bit lower, so get a slight Porsche/Ferrari feeling.

Wasn't even the fastest model, but came with impressive acceleration and moderate diesel consumption.

Would consider buying one, but am a big public transportation commuter.

Surely you don't live in England?

Exactly the same thing happened to my bmw 3 series msport 10 plate. Again the N43 engine, my car ended up in the BMW specialist garage in Lutterworth and ended up costing just shy of 2k.

Did you go directly to BMW? They were really helpful with me not so much my sister though.

It's annoying as they are well aware of the issue it just depends on who you deal with as to wether they fix it out of a gesture of goodwill.

Figured bmw wouldn't be interested in any goodwill gestures due to the age and thought they would look to charge a fortune to fix. I ended up at a BMW specialist in Lutterworth, they were very helpful and mentioned this issue was a very common fault on the N43 engine. Like you say it's very poor on BMW's part, my car had only done 49k when it happened.

Slightly off topic but has anyone else seen a broken-down ice cream van on the back of a flatbed?

My thoughts went to all the melted ice cream in the chillers and the mess the unfortunate owner would have to clean up!

Sorry didn't manage a photo. I was on the road myself at the time and I guess use of cameras on phones is just as illegal and dangerous as talking on them while driving.

Had someone plow into the side of my A6 in a car park and not leave their details, such a buzz

Mate, not good :(

Had it it happen to me, too. Did the car park have cctv? Maybe go back and have a look to see if there's any street cctv cameras or shops that have them.

Failing that, think happy thoughts and hope the fvcker drops dead from galloping dick-rot

You really should have gone straight to BMW, as they are usually very good in cases like this where it is a known fault. The E46 M3 and 330 coupe had problems with the chassis failing at the rear suspension mounting points and fixed cars foc up to 10 years old, and it wasn't an inexpensive fix either.

Alright guys, I know sod all about cars, I'm moving house and I'm going to be living on a hill so high I can probably take a picture and prove the flat earthers wrong.

Need some decent all weather tires so I don't slide down said hill come winter. Size 225/50R17 ???

Any help would be greatly appreciated, probably looking at max of £150/tire.

Suggest that anybody not getting their questions answered on here submits them to www.honestjohn.co.uk

They answer loads of motoring queries on there

Honest John is my go to place, however I'd never buy anything if I didn't ignore some of it.

Anyway I'd buy a Nissan z series of I could as I swear by Nissan's even though I don't drive one....

Yeah, I know what you mean - it can put you off and make you think all cars are shite.

That said, as someone that buys cars that won't be covered by a warranty during the majority of time I own them, I want to know if one is prone to catastrophic failures that will effectively end the vehicle's life, and it's surprising how many cars are

Bought myself a 2014 Audi A4 Black Edition S line a couple of weeks ago.

I had before a 62 plate BMW 3 series coupe, 39,000 miles full BMW service history bought directly from BMW in Derby. I was on the M6 going to Wales 3 weeks ago and all of a sudden got a warning light "oil pressure low" I'd only just had it serviced 6 weeks ago and it had been recalled by BMW for a brake sensor. So I turned round and headed for home.

Took it to BMW on the Monday and after a bit of investigation and stripping it down (which costs £700) they discovered the timing chain had slipped smashed the guide rail and engine valve and this had stopped oil flowing into the engine.

A day later they rang back and said that it will need a new engine and they will cover 100% of the costs. It had happened to my sister 6 weeks ago but she didn't have full service history and she had to pay £3500 contribution.

Just a warning for anyone with a petrol 1,3,5 series BMW the N43 engine is a load of rubbish.

Which is why I'm getting rid of my BMW 1 series!

My sister had the same problem after only having hers a few months.

I've had mine since March but already on the lookout for something new (that's not a BMWlol

Bloody Hell!

You don't expect that of BMW

I would. Drove one for a while. Stratospheric fuel consumption and incipient head gasket problems (needed topping up with oil once a week). It was black as well (the car!). Scared the life out of old ladies, twitching their lace curtains when you park outside their house.
