I know a lot of people will say he only has himself to blame, but I have nothing but sympathy for the poor bastard.

He looks like he hasn't long left & he's reached the point of no return, at least physically if not mentally.

I will be gutted to see him die

Seen him a couple of times down here, looked a bit better about 18 months or so ago but looks like he's taken a turn for the worse again. Don't know whats sadder, the state he's in or the fact people still follow him round taking these kind of photos, the bloke is clearly ill, have some fvcking respect.

He just can't find anything to replace his lost love of playing football at the highest - and so try's to drink that loss out of his mind. Just a shame no-one close to him has grabbed hold of him to try and continually show him another way.

I'm not sure that's it to be honest, his drink and drug problems started way before his career finished.

Standard gutter press behaviour from this country as well. They will sink to any low.

Literally the most talented England player in my life time.

So sad to see. But all the signs were there years ago. He loved a drink. Was as hyper as ****.

So sad to see. But he would never have survived 5 mins in the modern game due to his problems.

I love him to bits but he was a dinosaur in terms of lifestyle for a modern pro. Even in the era he played.

Loads have tried to help. He just isn't or doesn't want it and that's just his personality.

But I will always remember him for 90 and 96 and that will do for me.

Same old newspapers printing the same old shite. They'll do anything.

Just out of interest why do people think the end is nigh? Not saying your wrong but he's been in a total mess for years yet still keeps breathing.

This, I know an alcohlic that has looked worse than that for about 25 years and is still going (and drinking).

I had no idea you knew my family.

I assume simply because he's had health issues yet continues to drink, it often doesn't end well, but there's always exceptions.  I hope he gets better.

I do think some get so used to it, their body does - so no further danger could occur. If someone drinks a lot daily for example, but not binge-drink, it becomes a routine.

Though obviously this can be quite often be a rare case.

It's very simple with alcohol, it's blind luck. That's life experience and professional experience from both working on statistics and managing Case Managers who worked on a one to one basis with alcoholics. There are plenty of stories I could tell you from a 24 year old with Cirrhosis to a man who was nearly 70 sneaking bottles of Vodka under his hospital bed (in there because he fell over drunk not because of internal damage) without a serious ailment to his name other than he was a total liability as he was trollied (I mean trollied to the point where he had no self identification) 24/7. The Livers a crazy organ, some people's can take decades of abuse without so much as a scratch. Others can contract hepatitis off something as little as a stag do.

Obviously long term abuse or even mildly heavy drinking over decades is probably going to catch up with you eventually and give you or at least contribute to one unwanted side effect or another, that might not nesc mean a very early death though. There are averages to everything and statistically speaking if what he drinks at his worst is what he claims (3 bottles of spirits a day) and lets face it if your in you dressing gown buying a bottle of gin you could well believe that, he should of dead about 5 years ago, but bar heart failure doesn't look like he's going anywhere immediately to me.

guy is grieving the loss of his nephew i believe who died battling his own addictions. It is horrible to see him like this but he will hopefully get better soon and get back on the wagon.

The Sun will no doubt paint him as a hero when he does pass away despite the fact that they have regularly contributed to his decline and have made a fair amount of revenue from his misery.

I ****ing hate that newspaper. Why the **** people buy it I just don't know.
