The Fa have clearly lost there ambition. Given the fact that the previous managers were all pretty much big name signings, this could work in Allardyce's favour. No one is taking this appointment seriously at the moment, he may well fly underneath the radar with his work for a while. Remember how ecstatic people were in the past with all these foreign names floating around, now they've taken quite a nosedive with their enthusiasm. Give Big Sam some time and judge him by his results. You can always slate him later.
Les-TA-Jon Posted 20 July 2016 Posted 20 July 2016 This is actually a good appointment. Not afraid to be a bit controversial = better squad picks. Doesn't suffer fools gladly = less 'prima donnas' in the squad Has years of experience managing underdog teams that have to be well organised, have clear system and be greater than the sum of their parts = we've actually got a chance of winning more than one game a tournament.

This. On the face of it, it's an uninspiring choice, but so was Ranieri and we all know how that turned out. With the FA basically insisting on an English manager nowadays, there really aren't many who would be better than Big Sam. So long as he doesn't turn into another 'Yes-man' for the FA, a la Hodgson.
Sharpe's Fox Posted 20 July 2016 Posted 20 July 2016 Great appointment. Modern coaching methods, great man management, tactically aware and comes across as a top bloke. England will be playing four - four - fvcking - two.
Soar Fox Posted 20 July 2016 Posted 20 July 2016 2 proper wingers crossing balls in for Carroll & Defoe.
sdb Posted 20 July 2016 Posted 20 July 2016 Definitely uninspiring and pretty embarrassing really, given he could've been a Championship manager right now if a couple results didn't go his way. But... He is probably the kind of manager we need right now. Someone who gets the best out of players and doesn't suffer complete bell ends.
Facecloth Posted 20 July 2016 Author Posted 20 July 2016 Sunderland's statement seems to suggest they know nothing about it
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 20 July 2016 Posted 20 July 2016 Good on him, fantastic first name, someone with a clear ****ing plan and a connection to people who give a shit about their country. Gwon Sam.
Dames Posted 20 July 2016 Posted 20 July 2016 I think Big Sam will look to copy the Leicester approach with a few tweaks as England certainly have the players to play this way and Sam loves to be direct. This is a fantastic appointment - England were not going to get a world class manager and at one point Glenn Hoddle and Gareth Southgate were the favorites so its worked out well. People slating it need to realise that England are not a good side and they need a manager like Sam who will install a system and belief to get the best out of the players we have at our disposal. Also this may signal the end to under performing players being picked on merit.
Russell sprout Posted 20 July 2016 Posted 20 July 2016 I do like Sam,but think he's more suited to the old us(we're a top team now),he gets the job done, but that because his tactics are set up to not lose the game,England need to learn how to win the game,as shit as we are we're still a massive footballing nation,I just hope he gets it right
Raw Dykes Posted 20 July 2016 Posted 20 July 2016 I think this could be ideal, if the FA let him get on with the job, and if he's not under pressure to pick names over form players. Could be a lot worse.
Marmite Posted 21 July 2016 Posted 21 July 2016 Great appointment! An Englishman who will speak his mind and won't be scared of the FA.
boots60 Posted 21 July 2016 Posted 21 July 2016 Big Sam honours Limerick Irish league one 1992 Notts County division 3 1998 Couple of proptions via play offs Handful of manger of month awards Could make a film of this...oh hang on they already have.
suffolk fox Posted 21 July 2016 Posted 21 July 2016 Mark Noble, Andy Carroll, Jermain Defoe will all be in the next squad. Long ball England who would have thought.
foxy boxing Posted 21 July 2016 Posted 21 July 2016 if big sam is the best england manager we could get it just shows the state of english football right now,the only worse candidate would have been tony pulis? i really hope we don't revert to the long ball game just kicking it up field.i hope we still choose creative players who can go past players and make chances for themselves and others

What's wrong with kicking it long to a Striker playing off the shoulder of the last man with another looking for knock downs? With two wide men cutting in with one DM and one AM in the centre of the park with 4 defenders who can actually defend. No you're right that tactic will never work...... lets go back to passing it 40 times then back to Joe Hart to kick it out for a throw. I said it before the euros and I will say it again this should of been the team at the euros and I think big sam would have had the balls to do something similar. Hart Simpson Smalling Cahill Bertand Antonio Noble Drinkwater Albrighton Kane Vardy
filbertway Posted 21 July 2016 Posted 21 July 2016 Find it incredible that anybody that follows football actually thinks Sam is a long ball merchant. He plays to his teams strengths, you just need to look at some of the stuff West Ham were playing under him to see that he plays systems that suit the players at his disposal. Very happy with this appointment. Hope he lives up to my expectations and doesn't become some turgid boring predictable manager

I'm happy to try something different, we've tried foreign managers and it hasn't worked, we've tried new fancy "coaches" like Mclaren, or old duffers who've been round the block like Hodgson. Wales got this far having a manager who just picked a decent system and players who like him / each other and bought into it. Football isn't rocket science, lets try not over complicating it and just get a manager who pretty much always gets the best from his players... if he can do that with better players as well, then who knows.

If he changes things and forms a team rather that a collection of superstars then that would be a huge step forward, but time will tell, maybe he'll just pick the same old players playing a slightly different way.
Guest Mee-9 Posted 21 July 2016 Posted 21 July 2016 Is anyone else just thinking this is becoming a reality?
