Wolves pre-season friendly THIS AFTERNOON 3pm

It's mental how Cavaleiro is at Wolves when we're struggling to find creative options to bring into the side lol

The main thing is we are learning a lot about the team, not all good obviously - but we've still got time to bring in more players and move-on some who we don't need. The way it looks right now outside of Mahrez we are pretty done for creativity - Lawrence has been the only other one to really offer anything to us going forward this pre-season so we'd better not sell him otherwise i'd be really concerned, these clubs aren't coming in with 8-10 million bids for him because he's crap.

Demi Gray's a massive worry for me, if he thinks he's the stuff right now then he's deluded as he's so unaware of what happens around him it's untrue, if this is the final player we'll see he needs to be sold while the Liverpool and Tottenhams think they are getting a 20mil bargain. Drinky really looks lost to the point where Matty James is already ahead of him in my personal pecking order - at least James can pass, Danny seems to have forgotten everything about being a CM recently.

I have a lot of faith in Shakey overall - and while it's always easy to have knee jerk reactions in modern day football when there are a period of games where things aren't looking so good - i still retain faith that we're going to be moving on some players after this period - the Musas etc - and that we will bring in three more (including Kelechi) - we just still seem unbalanced as a squad and we are still looking for that tweek.

To say the positives from pre-season so far - Matty James, welcome back, he hasn't lost what made him a top midfielder - Tom Lawrence, looks like he's got a decent part to play as long as his attitude is good, so it's at least something we know these two are good to go hehe.

Eh, I'm pissed by the result, certainly. But their 3-4-3 is unusual, and we clearly struggled against it due to a lack of preparation. It also -- to my mind, anyhow -- highlights our need for a MF who can put our players in position to score goals. It is my hope that Nacho can do that, though Iborra moved forward and did a bit of that yesterday and looked good, and Lawrence certainly put our players in position to score yesterday but they fluffed their lines. But I seriously doubt we trust either Iborra or Lawrence in that department entirely, and I imagine the back office will be redoubling its efforts to find an AM with some class right now. Hell, even Gaston Ramirez is looking nice at the moment. In terms of formation, it seems very clear to me we want to move beyond the 4-4-2, and we plan to. The fact that we didn't today is more indicative of a missing piece in our linkage than anything else.

In all honesty, it is both a crap result AND not a huge deal. We need to hurry up and get rid of Mahrez, or make the decision to keep him this season, one or the other. And we need to get our full team together and lay a beating on someone, immediately. This team has plenty of talent, but it is still missing 2-3 pieces. Let's get them in and get to Europe. The talent is there despite this result. The sky isn't falling, we didn't go all out to win this game. But we obviously should've scored, and more importantly, shown more industry in the attack than what we did. We need someone who can put our lads in position to score goals. Let's hope we gerrimin.

So what's the excuse for the final games of last season which looked pretty much exactly the same as these pre-season games? People are concerned not because we lost but because we're approaching these games with the same lackadaisical attitude to the end of last season with zero attacking intent, zero attempts on goal and the same tired knackered old players. Our formation and approach is tired, we were sussed out ages ago and we only lifted ourselves last season because of the managerial change and the buzz it created. Without that we will continue to be toothless, careless and wasteful and with nobody to create we will look out of ideas.

All these pre-season games are showing is that we can expect more of the same and more of the same isn't going to work forever. It's like LCFC is stuck in a time warp where we refuse to move forward and let go of the past.

Prepare yourself for another laborious and frustrating start to the season - all the signs are there no matter how much the optimistic crowd are wanting to deny it.

Injuries mainly.   Playing Benny and losing Drinky.  Wrongly disallowed goal v Bournemouth and 2 touch pen v Man City.

Should've finished 9th.

Its an excellent finish no doubt, but I have to wonder where exactly our midfield was there. You just completely waltzed down the other end of the pitch without even a challenge.

This seems to have been a thing for a while now. Never get why we sit off so much, lack of belief in tackling abilities or what..

Blaming Benny is hardly fair.

Not when the alternative is Andy King.

...But I agree, Drinky has been a worry for some time now.

This is basically true. And imo the players got fired up as much by the stick they got after the sacking than by anything the new guy did.

We could start against Arsenal with, what, 9 of the 11 who won the title? We just aren't doing anything, everyone's two years older and Schmeichel is probably the only one who's actually better than two years ago. The quality of football is getting worse, and we seem stuck in this weird negative mindset where we have to whack everyone behind the ball every game and just smash it long up the sideline. They were even doing it against MK Dons last night ffs. Then the attacking players get pelters for not doing anything with their 3 touches a game.

The problem that me is not that we need a plan b, but a plan a.

Shakey's style is neither one thing nor another, it's just a load of players with no ideas. We don't play like we did when we won the league, and whatever we are trying to do, it doesn't look like it's panning out.

We play with no tempo at all and that is the main problem. It's also clear we need at least a couple of big signings to strengthen the starting 11, starting with a creative player in midfield.

Yes. Under cr we took counter attacking to an almist cartoon level.  If we try to do it with care the impact is lost.

Last season... for whatever reason cr tried to do something different. ... and this failed.

If cr gets caught between two modes of play he will be following cr thru the door.

We can do the counter stuff (providing we commit to it).  We now need a set of players who can do something alternative.

Didn't watch it? Did I miss anything? lol

No. Basically a pre-season game with many similarities to our worst games under Ranieri last season.

Best chance came from their defenders struggling with a bounce. Wolves could have won by 4 or 5.

Did you see the Spurs game?

Yeah, but he's hardly to blame for finishing 9th. That whole match was pathetic.

Pre-season is about building confidence and resilience and we're doing none of it. Instead we're seeing complacency and while some of y'all hoping the squad will come good in 2 weeks. Last year's preseason was an omen. 2 years ago was an omen. Why wouldn't this one be?

Not quite sure how many times it needs reiterating but those of us who are 'overreacting' aren't doing so because of a few pre-season losses, we're doing so because we've failed to sign players who are an improvement, we've failed to try tactics to freshen us up and we've failed to muster up more than a handful of chances whilst lower league teams are busting our midfield a brand new shiny arsehole.

We won the league 2 seasons ago ffs, we shouldn't look this bad, friendly fitness test or not. Really, not, hard, to, grasp... Is it?

Well if you've got long standing concerns about recruitment and failing to address our weaknesses in this window, that's fine, I agree.  But this is the Wolves match thread and people ARE overreacting on the basis of pre season performances.

As for lower league teams bossing us, why don't you judge us against the Liverpool and West Brom games.  We are not suddenly worse than Wolves or only as good as MK Dons.

It's not ideal, but it's not that significant.

We loose a meaningless friendly that was nothing.more than a training session for us and foxestalk goes into meltdown.

Wow just wow ?

It was a meaningless to Wolves and yet they looked brilliant though

I went today and we stank the place out. I thought Wolves looked very good but we helped them out quite a bit and it could have easily been 3 or 4.

I do have serious concerns (in two years we don't appear to have improved the quality of our starting 11) but thinking about it, is this pre season that much better than last year's ?

We've played two games in extreme humidity off the pace. Then we step off the plane and within a couple of days there's Luton, we play pretty much the second string at MK and our 'starting' 11 then get turned over by Wolves. I know it is what it is but it's not ideal.

Why would we play with tempo in pre season run outs and burn ourselves out?

I'm sure the lads will be fired up for the Arsenal game and Shakespeare is working out adjustments he will need to make for the opener.

To play better it's not a case of simply changing formation. It's a case of fine tuning players instructions/actions in certain match situations too.

Shakespeare has already said we require new players so he's working with what he's got right now too.

It's pre season, there's no value in beating anyone or taking any notice of performances or results. It's about fitness and about the management working out what we've got.
