funkyrobot Posted 26 August 2017 Posted 26 August 2017 With BT it almost felt like we were watching coverage from MUFC TV such was the bias. Commentary, highlights, talking points. Everything was skewed. No real assessment of Fellainis borderline offside goal during the match too.
Guest Col city fan Posted 26 August 2017 Posted 26 August 2017 It was a typical Shakespeare, away from home type set up. Two banks of 4, solid, deep, defensive and trying to get chances on the counter. You can't blame him. We were never going to win playing gung go against Utd at Old Trafford. But......its dreadful to watch it. Without Kante to make those all important forward bursts, the counter attacking game is nowhere near as effective. Ndidi looks better alongside Drinkwater. James is just ok (I keep saying this...hes just a plodder). We can't keep the ball. There's no one to link up play with Riyad and the 0-2 I predicted at half time came in easy. Money won again on that. We look boring playing like this...but I understand why we do.
vanity Posted 26 August 2017 Posted 26 August 2017 If this team is to become a top-6 threat, the first step is getting our possession right. The problem is we do not consistently create quality goal scoring opportunities against the better clubs because we are unable to move the ball forward in a controlled, deliberate fashion the way a team like MU can. What drives me nuts is that it is not particularly difficult to do for inferior teams, but because our personnel are so poor on the ball, we struggle with it to a ridiculous extent. We have to keep improving our possession, starting with the next few days. The first step is another CB who can bring the ball out. If we get Iborra back, he is a huge help in games like today. I don't think Matty James and Ndidi are good enough on the ball to relieve the pressure of the press, and I don't know what we do with two core defensive midfielders who are so poor on the ball. They are fine against less effective teams, but were worthless maintaining possession today. We need an elite MF who can handle the ball. To his credit, Shakey seems to understand the need to improve our possession, and Maguire and Iborra are both very comfortable on the ball. We have gotten lazy and arrogant about our counterattack, we cannot remain indifferent to our possession, we can still be a counterattacking team, but we must be able to reliably move the ball forward. If we had the ability to do that, MU wouldn't have gotten all those extra opportunities, and we probably draw today, possibly scoring one ourselves. I saw the final numbers for possession were 66-33, but that doesn't tell the full story, most of that was our backs kicking it around to each other, we were wholly incapable of possessing the ball on their side of the field and they lived inside our half. There is major work to do.

The game was more open at Arsenal. We were comfortable with open play today but the set piece finished us off.

49er Posted 26 August 2017 Posted 26 August 2017 The key moment (yet again!) was Shakey's subs. How many other teams have had two substitutes coming on , in the space of three games, and scoring against us? Why didn't he just leave things as they were until around the 80th minute? We did really well in the second half - Lukaku didn't really look a threat, Pogba went awol, Mahrez was causing problems). Why bring King on?

We were getting overran in midfield and in the absence of Iborra and Drinky, king was the logical swap. The 1st goal came, yet again, from a basic defensive error at a set piece.

Farrington fox Posted 26 August 2017 Posted 26 August 2017 N'didi is concerning me a bit, he came into the side last season, made an instant impact and looked excellent. Thus far this season he's looked ordinary, little sign of progress and gives the ball away far to easily.
FrankieADZ Posted 26 August 2017 Posted 26 August 2017 thought we did well at times in keeping Utd at bay, looked solid, shame one lapse of concentration at the corner cost us for the first, shame the linesman wasnt as eagle eyed as the one last weekend at the Stoke game too all in all thought i have to admit ive been pleased with the performances, and expect us to have 3 points out of 3 games, still think we need to add a couple of players before the transfer window closes
Bryn Posted 26 August 2017 Posted 26 August 2017 We did better than many will against Utd this season. We desperately need an alternative style of play though. And Shakespeare needs to stop using players who aren't fit. Vardy was miles short today. Without Drinkwater we have no playmaker.

The players weren't communicating what the roles were. Apparently that was a problem at Arse as well (other than the subs just being bizarre!). It's a weird one. It wasn't like the players that came on don't speak English which would be understandable but it was King and Gray ffs. Is James less Vocal than DD? Clutching at straws here as I just don't understand it. Rashford replaced Mata. Ndidi seemed to be marking Mkhitariyan in 1st half 2nd half no idea who he was marking. But if it was Mkhitariyan who then takes the corner surely Rashford is his man. But first bad game Ndidi has had so have to cut him some slack. Thing is it was a crap corner really anyone on Rashford should have been able to get it out as it was a low trajectory. Felt bad for Kasper he didn't deserve that after the amount of saves he had made to keep us in the game uptil that point. We have to do better than that at corners that's for sure.
