Is Demarai Gray an enigma?

We'll be saying he has potential for years, he isnt good enough and never will be.

We'll be saying it until he's 25.

Player development isn't linear. Just because he isn't developing at the speed you assume he will, it doesn't mean he won't at all. I get the idea one day things will just click for him: a eureka moment.

A few matches ago you saw him on the tunnel cam with a self help book under his arm. Whether it'll help or not, who knows: but there is the possibility of improvement and to throw that away is wasteful.

We all moan that we don't invest enough in the development of English players. Well if we want to, this is the price you have to pay. You don't get anything for free and nothing comes easy. Gray is a very good example of this.

Gray is no enigma, he can be read like an open book. He plays well when we play well. Gets stroppy if something 'happens'. If the game isn't going well he is incapable of changing things and tends to just disappear. So, a great bench player to throw on to rest players when the game is secure but unlikely to ever impact a game in a decisive and positive way. Not a grab the game by the scruff of the neck kind of midfielder.

Not sure what his coaching development consisted of but he doesn't seem to have grasped the fact that his greed wrecks the tempo of our forward play  Needs to get on script or play Championship football where he can get away with this. All head down and oblivious to all around him for my money.

No, no he isn't, he's just rubbish. He is not a PL standard player by a country mile. Top half championship, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and say maybe. Bottom half/ League One - Yes, absolutely his bag. Running and endeavour quite often get mistaken for skill and talent here on Foxestalk.

There's no such thing as a "PL standard player".

The top 6 have quality squads, the rest of us don't. Every squad outside the top 6 is full of players that wouldn't be considered "PL standard".

So the top 6 have the PL standard then?

They have quality players which, by your definition, would be "PL standard".

But every other team has starting 11's full of players that wouldn't be considered "PL standard". Take Bournemouth, who have the likes of Steve Cook and Simon Francis starting in their defence every week .... yet, they are 10th.

You don't need superstars of "PL standard" players to win games. The league is not strong outside the top 6.
