John Motson - Retiring after 48 years of live sport commentary analysis, and 50 years associated with the BBC

Recommended Posts

Tomorrow's game at Arsenal will be his final one as a live sports radio broadcaster after his lengthy role.. Sure is a legend of the British game.

Will be very much missed when he leaves Match of the Day in May.

I remember many famous highlights of him, but it's certainly fair to say that all of them have stood out with the way that he has presented them at the time. His interview with Brian Clough sticks in my mind the most.

It'll of course be difficult for anyone to achieve his feat at the BBC, as it's remarkable really.

The Wenger of sports commentary.

The last few years, listening to him in commentary has been a bit painful.

However,  a bloke in a sheepskin coat shouting at the exciting bits (and having fun rather than working) became the archetype, so his retirement is richly deserved.

Long overdue - in my eyes, listening to sports commentators very much resembles eating marmite. Either you like it or you don't.

They tend to split opinions like few other things.

John Motson usually annoyed me no end with his voice and his exaggerated "Ohhh!" sound after each game highlight.

would take motson all day long over that other guy - what's his name... martin tyler.

that bloke is such a ****ing nob.

Both of whom are better than Clive fking Tyldesley.

Motson's style always grated on me a bit. I think he's fine as a panel member on five live where his knowledge comes into play more than in his commentary.

Yeah it's embarrassing listening to him on MOTD, most commentators will have the information as soon as it's happened even if the live camera angle isn't clear what has happened

With Motson it's:

"Ooh and it's a ball from the... Liverpool player, and it's..."

*Goal*

"...it looks like that's a... A goal! Scored from the Liverpool player!"

"...what a goal from Salah, the Liverpool player! And a superb assist from the Liverpool player"

*2 minutes later*

"That's the third assist from Firmino, the Liverpool player, this season"

Yeh he's been senile for 10 years. Some of the comments on here are fair about him over that period but he was so good at what he did before that.

Sadly though this doesn''t change the fact that the man who took over from his lead role with the BBC, Guy Mowbray, is nowhere near good enough to fill his sheepskin. Motson is well remembered for his voice and his famous screeches but Mowbray can't even raise his voice without sounding like it's a struggle. I always thought this made him a strange choice.

Amazing to think Motson and Barry Davies were from the same era. It seems that commentators are now picked on their journalistic skills and no thought to the quality of your voice is considered.

Now he's finished, I prefer Jonathan Pearce the most now of the commentators at the moment.

Really? Doesn't say much about the standard of the other commentators if you think that.

I'm not a big fan of JP but this is one of my favorite bits of commentary ever.

Brilliant, can watch that over and over but in typical Leicester style it ends with Shinji falling over !!!

Motty, a bit like Wenger, should have gone years ago, and by carrying on has tarnished his legacy a bit. Brilliant years ago. Great excitement, quick to pick up on the action and always had a stat. Now he just shout "oh" a lot rather than describe the events. He's seems to have no idea what's going on. Plus he's started to get his facts wrong. Said Kane was on loan at Southampton for example, might seem a little thing, but for a man who's known for his great stats and knowledge, and therefore thorough research, that's poor.

"That was a poor challenge"
