Luke Shaw's Manchester United future in doubt

LUKE SHAW’S Manchester United career is over following his public dressing down from Jose Mourinho.

Shaw will be sold this summer, with Tottenham, Leicester and former club Southampton all in the hunt for the left-back.

Shaw was left humiliated after being hauled off at half-time during United’s 2-0 FA Cup win over Brighton on Saturday night.

Mourinho laid into him afterwards and accused the defender of letting him down and not following simple tactical instructions.

Starsport understands it was the last straw for Mourinho, who no longer feels able to trust the full-back.

Mourinho has targeted Danny Rose as Shaw’s replacement and wants to use the 22-year-old as bait to lure the England and Tottenham ace to Old Trafford in a £50m deal.

“I chose Luke because at least Antonio defensively was capable of good positioning”

Man Utd boss Jose Mourinho

In the meantime United are expected to trigger the 12-month option on his existing four-year-deal so they can secure a bigger fee for him in the summer.

Mourinho didn’t hold back in his criticism of Shaw after seeing United reach the FA Cup semi-finals.

“We worked on certain kinds of movements, where it was really important the two full-backs were aggressive, created space for (Nemanja) Matic and were in front of the two central defenders. I didn’t have that,” he said.

“I had to change one and I chose Luke because at least Antonio (Valencia) defensively was capable of good positioning.

“Luke, in the first half, every time they came in his corridor, the cross came in and a dangerous situation was coming. I was not happy with his performance.”

Shaw has endured a miserable time since joining United in a £30m deal in 2014 as the most expensive teenager in British football.

Serious injuries, including a double leg break in 2015, loss of from and question marks over his attitude and fitness have combined to see him become a huge let down.

The left back has started just 39 league games in almost four seasons at Old Trafford and seen Ashley Young, Marcos Rojo and even right back Matteo Darmian all picked ahead of him.

Shaw went to the World Cup aged just 18 in 2014, but has won just seven caps since then and is not expected to make Gareth Southgate’s squad for Russia 2018.

Mourinho admitted on Saturday that he risks losing the dressing room after publicly slamming his players for being scared to play and lacking personality.

But midfield star Matic has backed the hardline approach of his boss and said his team-mates need to learn to deal with his demands.

Matic said: “He is special because he wants to win always. You can see when we lose a game, he cannot accept that.

“Probably that’s why he won more than 20 trophies in his life. It is very difficult to work with him because he always wants more and more.

“Even if you win the league he wants to win it again next season. He is like this and the players need to be ready for that.

“Because at this high level, at Manchester United and where I used to play at Chelsea, the players need to be ready for that because the pressure is big. Everyone expects you to win every game.

“Obviously it is not possible, but supporters always expect. It doesn’t matter if you are tired or not, supporters want high quality football. It is normal.”

Solon - obvious listed

spurs - obvious listed due to yanited wanting rose

Leicester - added for effect as we have money

We don’t do our business in public - never have. If we are linked it probably means we aren’t interested

By the time Mourinho finishes with him he'll be a jibbering wreck and barely a football player!!

Actually think he'd benefit a lot from Puel, he's pretty much the perfect manager for him to work with:

1. Ex fitness coach.

2. Good at building up the confidence of young players.

3. Puts up with Chilwell without slating him.

Salah and Kevin de browny survived it well enough the Jose slaughtering

How would extending his contract another year make him more valuable if it's blatantly obvious the manager wants rid of him?

Left back is needed though, Fuchs is surely done so we need someone to at least push Chilly. Right back needed too and a CB next to Mags. Big summer coming up

We have an aging back line.

Chilwell is going to be a great LB but we need someone to back him up unless Conor Wood is good enough to make the step up. RB is our biggest priority, I want to see that Simpson is the backup to the backup. CB, doesn't worry me. Dragovic is good enough to start next to the fantastic Maguire and we have at least 3 great young players for the position.

I’d happily take him, I don’t think he’d cost anywhere near the fee being mentioned after Jose has told the world he’s fat, lazy, doesn’t know what he’s doing and has a shit attitude.

100% need 2 more centre backs and a right back as well so it’s going to be an interesting summer for Puel.

hes defensive to the extreme and when you look at the games we’ve lost / drawn they’ve all been down to ridiculous defensive errors.

Looks utterly finished as a premier league player since his leg break. Feel bad for the lad as he had bags of potential. From all the rumours I've heard though, he comes across as lazy with a bad attitude.

Can do far better.

Yeah, they got sold.

Written off and he's only 22.

Anyone would think we were Euorpean Champions like Forest.

I'd probably take him if we can get it done early and spend pre-season getting him fit and motivated. Can't see us being in for him though, if we sign a left back it will be a more experience one to replace Fuchs I reckon. Right back is the bigger priority.

Mourinho uses fear and intimidation as and bullying, calling players out as coaching methods and it has adverse affects on some players like Shaw. you have to get to know the players and see what works with each one individually. sometimes it is a stick or a rod approach and sometimes it is an arm across the shoulder approach but to openly be critical of players and to keep singling players out as if they are being bullied is poor management and clearly how well Man City are doing under Pep has got under Mourinho's skin. of course the player takes responsibiity to do his job that he is being asked to do properly but it is about coaching these players so they learn to do the job being asked to do. If Mourinho cared less about his own popularity and making headlines as much about getting the best out of players maybe the team would be doing a lot better!.

Interesting point about the bullying.

Probably one of the biggest bullies ever was Brian Clough and he's still lauded as one of the all time greats.

But times have changed and 40 years ago it may have worked - but not now. Joey Barton was having a row with Alan Brazil about this yesterday and saying that today's pampered and sensitive players just don't respond to it any more.
