Egypt v Uruguay - Match thread.

Expecting a comfortable win for Uruguay in this one, think too many people are buying into the Salah hype regarding Egypt.

I also expect Uruguay to win as well but I can see them drawing.  There are examples of a star player carrying lesser nations before-  Stoichkov in 1994 and Suker in 1998 who made the team raise their game as well.   I was little young back then but I think Croatia had a half decent side which made Suker's talisman job bit easier but I do not think Bulgaria was that strong back then?  

 

Salah just seem to have this knack of being lucky so I reckon his luck could have rubbed off on Egypt as well.

Egypt aren't just Mohammed Salah. Mahmoud "Trezeguet" Hassan on the left, Hegazi in defense, Elneny in front of the back four, and Elmohamady adds the experience.

Sobhi as a super-sub and I rate Omar Gaber also.

In an effort to win my work sweepstake outright I have Uruguay down to make the semi final. I don't think that is impossible. They were 2nd in South American qualifying and are no mugs. They are a little fortunate to be in what I consider to be the easiest group. I expect them to win the group comfortably and they will be a handful for anyone in a knockout game.

From memorey balakov and letchkov especially were talented and had decent tournaments.  But shockingly was 24 years ago now! Croatia just had a decent side, Plenty of players playing top level football at the time any many progressed after, Egypt lack the kind of supporting cast of either. Your talking about two teams who got deep into the tournament there salah won’t be carrying Egypt to a place in the quarterfinals.

 

they could get through the group though, anything tomorrow is a bonus but Russia despite today aren’t great shakes and the Saudis look awful, hate to judge a team on one game and given they all play their trade in the Saudi league and I have to confess that’s not top of my sporting viewing list but still.

yer, said in work there’s probably not a worse opponent for a one-man team with a slightly injured one man than uruguay. literally any of their 23 man squad would be delighted to take a red card for the team and absolutely annihilate salah inside 5 minutes.

Let's be fair, Egypt are shit and there's a world of difference between scoring when you've got Fermino and Sane playing alongside you versus Stoke and West Brom and beating some of the world's best defenders alongside dross.
