good build up play ..plenty of crosses, corners and free kicks went into the box but we won no headers... so with no ariel threat whats the point ?

you could argue it was good defending, maybe need Iborra in there as he has a good header on him. there was about 3/4 corners in the first half that if it wasn't for a united head we would have scored, good defending some of those Maddison corners were lethal

Since we got promoted that was the 5th time we have played at old Trafford. The results were.

Lost 3-1

Drew 1-1

Lost 4-1

Lost 2-0

And last night's lost 2-1.

There is no precedent for winning or even playing well and if you can't see the positives in a young vibrant side showing no fear and getting on the ball and playing some nice stuff then you are either very stupid or very stubborn.

Thought you were going to end that final sentence with "or an ostrich!":pearson:

Plenty of positives.

Same old problem regarding scoring whilst on top .

Man U did ,we didn’t.

New boys looked good , would like to see us try 3 at the back at home .

Feel we are an attacker light .

Those saying gaffer under pressure??

We are a team in transition. Preseason was a farce World Cup didn’t help with 10 players returning at different times.

Never get anything at Old Trafford..but for chances missed.

Lazy journalism - easy narrative - likely to get more clicks

Absolutely spot on. Journalism just isn't what it was - everything has to be read in the context of what is being sold. For most it's now advertising space/click bait so all stories have to follow a narrative arc that supports that objective. Given up on listening to most of them tbh.

look like Puel wants to play without a big target man (hence no Slimani,Ulloa) thats fine it works great for Man City,Liverpool etc but why waste possession by putting in high crosses that we are never going to win ?

I think you’ve nailed it there mate.

I dont one know why I’m surprised at the whole thing being about Man Utd. We were brilliant last night and if we can play that well all season the target should be significantly higher than 7th.

I'm not sure we really learn't anything about the coming season from last night that we didn't already know.

1 We're miles off the top 6

2 We don't start games on the front foot

3 We generally move the ball too slowly

4 We have quite a decent amount of possession but don't do enough with it on the whole.

5 We seem capable of playing one decent half but not two.

6 We don't have enough goal scorers on the pitch and that has got increasingly the case with the loss of Mahrez.

7 Our midfield looks too lightweight

8 If Vardy gets injured we are going to struggle badly

The match against Wolves will tell us more. It is a game we badly need to win and anyone who thinks they will be easy is in for a nasty surprise. They are a  very decent side full of confidence and could easily beat us.

I'm still far from convinced by Puel. I don't believe he can motivate the team but the next few games will be key to his future at the club.

Some positives from last night but United were there for the taking and we didn't really do enough to win. Some of our play was decent but once we conceded the early goal I didn't really feel we were ever likely to get anything from the match as I think they would have just upped their level if required. Unfortunately we allowed united to win when they were probably playing at about 60% of their best level.

Some players did well though and some of the passing was good. Plenty of positives to work on but at this level you can't be a work in progress for very long or you will be cut off in the lower part of the league table. At least our goal difference is only -1.

Thought we were excellent at times last night and overall were just about worth a point. Think we can feel unlucky to have come away with nothing. The system and style Puel wants seemed to flow a lot better last night and I thought his team selection, of the players available to him, was just about spot on. We gave a very good account of ourselves and to all intents and purposes this is a performance that, despite a narrow loss, the players will take confidence in going forwards. No points on the board but a good start nonetheless.

Very, very impressed with Ricardo and Maddison. We worked a few good opportunities and forced De Gea into a few great saves too. Onwards and upwards :scarf:

Anyone whinging about that needs to have a word with themselves. Played some cracking stuff at times and our young guns shone. Chilwell, Gray, Maddison, Pereira all outstanding.

Chilwell and Gray were not outstanding.

I agree about Pereira though - our best player yesterday I thought.

Odd quote given the value of both squads.

But not odd given the tw@ that said it.

Seriously, Utd fans should be embarrassed by him using such a dumb excuse. He knows his team was very fortunate last night.

Gray's defensive work last night was extraordinary given the abuse he gets for it. He was everywhere. He's the one we've got to hope steps up to the plate this season. I think in a free role with Maddison behind Vardy or Iheanacho will work.

I noticed that too, really worked hard. He probably knows this is his shit or bust season and he know he has to perform. Good luck to him.

As last season plenty of possession little to show for it. Not convinced by Puel. Just like I said it would end in tears when Ranieri was appointed and I was proved right in the end.

Christ, you’re dense.

You were proved right after we won the league lol

i hope we have the same chain of events this time round with you ultimately being proved right in the end.

Lots of positives, Vardy is stilll sharp,  Maddison and Pereira look great,  Chilwell and Gray look like they will be given a chance to develop and I think they will.  Nacho looked good.

there is the fake Mahrez and three news CBS to throw into the mix

looking forward to Wolves

You were 'proved right' by Ranieri's sacking!

So are you seriously saying you would’ve preferred it if we'd never had him as our manager?

Part of the enjoyment of watching it last night on Sky was all the miserable , bored Man U supporters! That shot of the vice chairman and big knobs needed a speech bubble of “ why  are we so shit and not scored 10 against Liesesster. “

What happened to the ethos of Busbys babes, free flowing attacking Red Devils , Fergies exciting youngsters! Ha, biggest club in the world and their fans looked embarrassed. So proud of us last night.

I wonder if we'll ever change the kickoff routine of blasting the ball straight to the opposition, I can't remember us getting hold of the ball once leading up to the penalty it just makes no sense to do that.

I do not get the not creating anything vibe. We gifted one of the best defensive teams in the world a 1-0 lead and still managed to create huge chances for Maddison, Gray and Vardy. Also had a string of offensive set pieces and if Nacho could playact like a Brazilian we should maybe have had a pen as well. Very encouraging stuff I thought.

looking back now at the performance now.......cant really grumble with it tbh, we played well for most of the match, most of the team look good and comfortable in possession, still room to improve though, Gray looks like he might well step up this season.........well hopefully,

personally think once Evans is fit he should come in for Morgan, the team even has potential for a 3-5-2 or 5-3-2 or something of the like once the Turkish lads work permit is sorted

certainly alot more positives than negatives to come from the game and you can actually see the direction Puel wants to take us, hopefully he'll be given time with it

Have a feeling he'll be throwing a few sickies based on previous form.

Thankfully we have signed two great prospects

Guessing Maquire + them as a back three evetually

Maddison motm

Perreira's class

Vardy's a game-changer. Without him we look impotent upfront.

Grey had his best game for us

Chillwells game let down by his final product

Iheanacho was disappointing.

Ghanzzi looked off the pace.

Amartey's no RB

Good game but Utd  'did enough' and had the rub if the green, again.

Excellent post.

I agree, United were there for the taking. Another opportunity to really make a statement gone begging. There have been a lot of them under Puel.

We played really well, but I can't think of one Man Utd player who I would describe as world class

How about the World Cup winner Pogba for starters ??!
