Think he still has a lot to offer England, but England haven't made use of what he's offered in the past so the decision makes sense. Especially as he's kept himself available if required.

He's probably thinking ahead, as well. Even if he stayed with England now and through Euro qualification, there's no guarantee he'd have a spot in the tournament squad at the age of 33.

Huge respect for what he's achieved to date. Now that he's able to focus on club football and doesn't have the pressure of being an England player it'll be interesting to see how it affects his form. He's a completely different player when he's relaxed and enjoying his football.

As others have said, the fact he wants to focus on his LCFC career if brilliant for us fans to hear. He really is becoming 'Mr Leicester'. Undisputed club legend.

Hopefully doesn't mean he's missed out on the squad for the Switzerland match, as delusional as that sounds of me given the way the statement has been announced. Another game at Leicester Vards, bring it home

Fair enough really, he’s been to two tournaments on the back of 20+ goal seasons. Both times we’ve been crying out for an alternative to Kane and neither manager has trusted him despite Kane not turning up for the first one and badly losing his way in the second.

Not sure I’d be volunteering to give up my summers any more if I was in his shoes.

Spot on. I’d imagine THIS is why he’s bowed out.

He’s always going to play second fiddle to Kane (fair enough) but also to Rashford and probably even Fanny Wellbeck (which isn’t fair enough)

I’d have had the hump myself.

edit: this has been one of my (very few) criticisms of Southgate. He still seems bound up in this ‘big team’ player thing. I’d personally have the likes of Eric Dier, Wellbeck and Phil Jones nowhere near the first 11. I’d simply play my best team, with best subs.

Though I’m not sure how Rashford is ahead of him. I’m sure it’s nothing to do with him being a Man United (reserve) player. ?

Rashford..needs dropping...I backed him in the past, but he's well off International form...Keep him away from England until after xmas,

he has to re- earn his place. At present there are more threatening players, actually playing for their teams...

Vardy,t he best England striker, that was never let loose,on worried opponents...He and Kane, should have been paired together,we all

missed out...

Not playing for a big club, not fashionable enough.

While Kane is an overall better striker, Vardy could have offered something different especially against teams playing with a high defensive line but no manager had the balls to try it.

Not fooled by the WC results, Southgate is fraud and will be found out in the next Euro. If he lasts until then, that is.

Meanwhile, he'll be performing much better than them in the league in Southgate will beg for him to come back when Kane is injured.

I don't think it matters, he'd rather pick Rashford or a half fit Welbeck!

Beautifully handled, classy PR move by Southgate ahead of the squad announcement.

He's told Vards and Cahill that they are not included and going forward are not priority players for him.  He's given them a dignified and appropriate way to (probably) end their England careers.

Well handled all round and best for all concerned.

I was hugely disappointed that he didn't get more game time at the world cup. It would've been bloody great if he could have had a world cup goal to top off his incredible career.

I was nervous as anything during the Colombia penalty shoot out, just praying it wouldn't be Vardy that would fvck it up, but when it came to our 5th penalty and Eric Dier stepped up I was gutted. I would have loved it to have been Vardy to be the hero. That  little injury and England's reluctance to play 2 in form top strikers meant he didn't get his hollywood ending, but he has a much better career than most and leaves with his head held high.

Unfortunately mate I think this means he won't be in the squad.

Never really used properly, Southgate would start to phase him out gradually so best all round if he steps back now.

England will cope and we get a fresher Vardy after internationals.

About time tbh.

If it were me I think I’d have done it a while ago.

He didn’t get played and even when he did it was never to his strengths or effective and hardly anyone passed to him.

This is all we ever do. Cope and do nothing(bit of sarcasm, we did get to semis somehow) because no manager has balls to do something  different.

On the plus side, vardy can now focus on banging them in the net. Win for us. No loss for england as they never used him anyways.

We got to the semis largely because of the opposition we were drawn against rather than any masterful management or abundance of talent in my opinion.

100% correct!

I agree with this statement 100%

Not suprised he has retired due to some of the shite that gets in ahead of them. And I know we did well at the World Cup getting to the semis and I am happy for it but again we didn’t do anything amazing and to lose 3 out of 7 isn’t great. Still no plan b for England when Kane is playing crap as well as lingard etc. Doesn’t even have to be vardy Just something different. Hopefully now he can focus his last few years at city and score lots more for us and maybe win another trophy and can have a reat instead of travelling for no reason to watch a game when could just watch it at home ?

Wanted him to do this for ages. Scoring 15+ goals at club level consistently and still not getting a look in was always pathetic. The fact we don't play Kane and Vardy together is ridiculous for me.
