Fleetwood Town boss Joey Barton accused Leicester City’s Under-21s of “lacking class” after their CheckatradeTrophy draw at Highbury last night.

READ MORE Match report: Fleetwood 2 Leicester 2
The 10 men of Fleetwood were denied a win in their opening group match as Ryan Loft scored his second of the night with the final kick to earn the Foxes a 2-2 draw.

Barton’s men had raced into a deserved 2-0 lead courtesy of Chris Long and Conor McAleny, but they ended up settling for one point after Cian Bolger was sent off.

A Leicester side including Danny Simpson took home an extra bonus point for winning the penalty shootout 7-6.

Barton was angry at the way some of Leicester’s young players conducted themselves during and after the game.

“It’s disappointing but it’s still a draw,” he said. “Our lads are disappointed because we absolutely battered them. I know we made 10 changes but we told the lads there were opportunities to push hard for the first team. I thought to a man they were excellent.

“We almost saw through the job, and until the sending-off we were dominant and probably should add a couple more.

“They’ve had a £20m signing on the pitch and a Premier League winner in Danny Simpson.

“But anyone who was here would have seen the difference in class. I’d be very surprised if any of their boys end up playing for the senior team, whereas we’ve got lots of young lads playing for ours.

“The conduct of some of them is a bit suspect, talking to our players about how much they’re earning and stuff like that. It lacks a bit of class. In that respect, I think this is a worthwhile experience for them because they’ve just been outplayed by a team two divisions below.

“They got very lucky with the penalty shootout. I was disappointed we didn’t win it because we were better in every single department for 75 to 80 minutes of the game.”

City's Youngsters Fight Back To Seal Shoot-Out Success At Fleetwood
DEVELOPMENT SQUAD

A fightback from two goals down and a dramatic penalty shoot-out success earned two points for Leicester City's Development Squad in the Checkatrade Trophy at Fleetwood Town on Tuesday.
With City 2-0 down and just 10 minutes remaining against Joey Barton's men, Ryan Loft recovered from an earlier penalty miss to score a late brace before netting the winning kick in a 7-6 shoot-out triumph.

Fleetwood had led courtesy of strikes from Chris Long and Conor McAleny, either side of half-time, but they were reduced to 10 men when Cian Bolger was dismissed on the hour-mark.

With competition rules stating that tied group stage matches go straight to penalties, it fell to Loft to conclude a roller-coaster night and convert the decisive penalty, collecting his side an additional point.

Following last week’s Premier League 2 victory at Derby County, in came Loft and Louis Ramsay for the Foxes, while Fleetwood's line-up only had two different faces from the side which were defeated at King Power Stadium in the Carabao Cup last month.

Goalkeeper Viktor Johansson was called into action after seven minutes in the City net as Harrison Biggins located Kyle Dempsey on the edge of the area, but his low drive was saved well.

Five minutes later, City were unfortunate not to be ahead after a smart passage of play from the Premier League 2 Division 1 leaders against Sky Bet League 1 opposition.

It landed to Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall in the 18-yard box and the young midfielder’s half-volley cannoned back off the underside of the bar before Fousseni Diabaté hit it over from the rebound.

Another opportunity arrived shortly after as Loft galloped down the left flank and first found Raúl Uche Rubio and then Diabaté but both were denied by outstanding blocks from the hosts.

However, it was Fleetwood who took the lead in the 33rd minute when Gethin Jones made progress down the right wing and found Long in the box, who slotted it past Johansson in the Leicester net.

After the break, Long turned provider for the Cod Army, sliding a smart pass from the right into the area for McAleny to cushion it into the bottom corner and double his side's advantage.

Forward Ryan Loft reflects on a night in which he scored a dramatic brace and sealed a penalty shoot-out success at Fleetwood in the Checkatrade Trophy...

On the hour-mark, Fleetwood were reduced to 10 men and City awarded a penalty after Bolger brought Loft to the floor in the area, but the City man sent it over Paul Jones' bar.

However, Loft's determination to make amends yielded its due reward with 10 minutes to play.

Calvin Ughelumba, a second half substitute, curled a fine cross into the summer signing's path and his deft finish trickled over the line to narrow the arrears.

The scores were level five minutes into added time after more dogmatic work from Loft to bundle it in - sending the clash to penalties.

Just Josh Knight, an impressive figure at the back, missed his spot-kick, with Diabaté, Hamza Choudhury, Callum Wright, Dewsbury-Hall, Darnell Johnson and Liandro Martis also converting.

That left it to Loft to write the final line of an enthralling encounter, following Dempsey's miss from 12 yards, to score the winning penalty for the Foxes.

After already getting his side back into the game 15 minutes earlier, Ryan Loft's second strike was undoubtedly a dramatic moment which allowed for the heroic exploits to come.

Not deterred by a penalty miss just after the hour-mark, the 20-year-old dragged his side into the game before going one further and sealing a memorable shoot-out success for the Club's youngsters.

Who impressed?
 Josh Knight
Knight was composed in possession for the Foxes and had the composure to make forward runs.

Josh Knight continues to excel for the Development Squad and playing alongside Danny Simpson is an experience which the Fleckney-based defender is clearly benefitting from.

Reliable at the back and a threat in advanced positions, Knight was also a nuisance for the hosts in the middle, commuting the ball assuredly into forward areas.

Where does it leave us?
 Raúl Uche Rubio
Uche Rubio asks questions of the Fleetwood defence.

Securing two points instead of one, City's youngsters sit in third place in Northern Group B following this result and Rochdale's 2-1 success over Bury at Crown Oil Arena earlier in the month.

Coming up…
 Lamine Kaba Sherif
Young midfielder Kaba Sherif shields possession of the ball in midfield for City.

Next up in the Checkatrade Trophy, the Development Squad travel to the Energy Check Stadium at Gigg Lane on Tuesday 16 October (7:45pm BST kick-off).

The details…

City: Johansson, Simpson, Johnson, Knight, Ramsay (Ughelumba 64), Choudhury (c), Dewsbury-Hall, Kaba Sherif (Martis 64), Diabaté, Uche Rubio (Wright 71), Loft

Subs not used: Davies, Shade, Leshabela, Tee

Goals: Loft 80, 90+5

Some of these u23s disappear for ages then randomly turn up again, like Uche a few weeks ago and tonight Martis has come on, forgot he was still here

Beaglehole doesn't like Uche which is why he was loaned out. Good technical player but not enough of a bruiser for 'hoofball'. Probably only playing now due to long terms injuries to Eppiah and Muskwe

He didn't rate Knight either which is why he was going to be released.....until Shakespeare saw him play and elevated him into the 1st team squad. The rest is history...

Last I heard Ndukwu is out for 3 months :(

By 'heard' I hope you mean the voices in my head told me so during a particularly vivid acid flashback. :nono: We've already got Eppiah, Muskwe and Hughes injured. Our injured u23 squad is looking shit hot atm.

Barton accusing children of lacking class and in the same breath saying that he doubts they will amount to anything. I wonder if hypocrisy is a part of that extensive vocabulary of his?

Chatting his team was full of kids, ours was a development squad. One premier league winning right back and 2 guys with a handful of first team appearances.

And he can hardly chat of class with the things he's done in the past

Barton claiming none of our youth players will make it in the first team on the night academy product Chilwell makes his England debut lol

Oh the irony!

However, I don't like the bit about some of our players "talking about how much they’re earning" (if true of course).

If true then Barton has a point

Given that he reckons there was a £20m player out there I don't think truth is important to Joseph Barton.

On the point of mouthing off , Kevin Kilbane said Fabregas would tell players they were shit on the pitch. Kilbane said he did it to him when he was playing for a lower league team at the time in the FA Cup when at the Emirates. It riled him up and Kilbane thought 'you arsehole Cesc do it to the big boys, not us little old us'.

My argument would be that surely if Fabregas didnt do it against the smaller teams then that would show greater disrespect than if he did.

It’s football, people say and do stuff to get under the skin of their opponents. It’s almost like the person accusing our players of this isn’t the biggest c unt in the game.

Is Joey Barton accusing Leicester City of 'lacking class' the ultimate irony?
The Fleetwood Town boss launched a scathing attack after the Checkatrade Trophy clash

ByJames SharpeLeicester City Correspondent
14:03, 12 SEP 2018UPDATED14:19, 12 SEP 2018

Bear with us a moment, our irony-o-meter just exploded.

Joey Barton, the manager of Fleetwood Town, has accused Leicester City’s youngsters of “lacking class” following their Checkatrade Trophy clash on Tuesday night.

The controversial former player, pundit, and now manager saw his team spurn a two-goal lead against City’s development squad, and then lose the penalty shoot-out for an extra point, which then sparked a fruity attack on his side’s opponents.

“The conduct of some of them is a bit suspect, talking to our players about how much they’re earning and stuff like that,” said Barton. “It lacks a bit of class.”

Oh damn, it’s exploded again.

It would probably be a bit of a cheap shot on our behalf if we were to stoop to listing all the times Barton has conducted himself in ways which could best be described as “suspect”. You know, things like punching opposition players in the face, calling fellow professionals a “maggot” and a “dog”, pulling down his shorts to show his bare backside to fans, or stubbing out a cigar in your team-mates eye.

No, no. We won’t mention them. And, anyway, it would take too long to get through them all. Google them, if you’ve got a spare couple of hours.

Instead, we decided it best to go through Barton’s post-match ramblings to try to point out where we think he’s talking rubbish.

“They’ve had a £20m signing on the pitch and a Premier League winner in Danny Simpson.”
The Premier League winner bit is right. The rest, though, is utter tripe. None of that development squad team cost anywhere near £20million.

Maybe, he’s on about January signing Fousseni Diabate? He only cost about £2m. Simpson himself cost about that when he joined from QPR in 2014.

The rest, the likes of Darnell Johnson, Josh Knight and Hamza Choudhury, have come through the academy while others were either free transfers or cost nominal fees.

We doubt the whole team combined would not even cost anywhere near £20m. Sorry, Joey.

“ I’d be very surprised if any of their boys end up playing for the senior team”
Any of them?

In the interest of fairness, let’s take Simpson and his 123 first-team appearances for Leicester and 386 combined senior matches out of it.

So, let’s look elsewhere. Diabate has already played 17 times for the City first-team. Choudhury has made nine, with eight in the Premier League. Knight made his debut last season in the Carabao Cup.

Johnson, meanwhile, featured heavily in pre-season for Claude Puel. He may not have made his competitive first-team debut yet but the 20-year-old has just signed a new three-year deal at Leicester. That would suggest the club think he has a future.

Shall we go on?

“ We absolutely battered them. They’ve just been outplayed by a team two divisions below.”
While Barton’s other comments have been proved to be factually nonsense, this one is more subjective. He may well think his side “battered” Leicester. That’s his opinion from watching the game.

Leicester did come from two goals down in the last 10 minutes.

Our reporter Jordan Blackwell was at the game too. His view was slightly different: “Fleetwood dominated the first 20 minutes but City deserved a draw for the chances they created.”

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall hit the crossbar and later forced a save from the Fleetwood goalkeeper. Callum Wright was denied too. Ryan Loft missed a penalty.

All these alongside the two late goals from Loft. Not a bad battering if you ask us.

“The conduct of some of them is a bit suspect, talking to our players about how much they’re earning and stuff like that...”
Now, we only have Barton’s word on this. So, we have to take him at face value unless we hear otherwise.

If City’s players were boasting about how much they earn then, yeah, that’s not great. Even if the majority of City’s youngsters and academy players are hardly going to be on eye-watering sums.

And we also don’t know the context. It could easily have been a response from someone like Simpson (not that he was the supposed perpetrator) to being teased for playing in the U23s. It might not.#

There are plenty of worse things said between opponents on a football pitch. Barton, of all people, should know that.

And on this theme, allow us to hand over to former Wolves midfielder Karl Henry, who regales us with his memories of playing against Barton...

"Joey Barton was telling everyone he is on 80-grand a week as usual. That is him,” said Henry. "He always does that during the game. Always."

We'll leave it there...

Barton has no credibility. He's pulled that 20M figure out his arse just because he lost. Don't know how he's got himself a mangement gig?

It's bizarre, isn't it? I don't think we had £20m of players combined on that pitch, let alone just one player who cost that much.

My best guess is that he knew we bought a young player (Maddison) for around that figure, and just presumed that he was playing that match. Given some of his other comments that level of ineptness to not even know the opposition XI after the game genuinely wouldn't surprise me, and if I was a Fleetwood fan I'd be seriously concerned about having someone like that in charge...
