Strange timing. Very strange.

He was doing quite well until his injury on that fateful day, but even in the season of goodwill this seems generous in the extreme.

Negations would have started months ago I’d imagine. Not sure the injury would have come into it. Gomez signed one with Liverpool after breaking his leg, Coleman aswell with Everton.

Probably the opposite as I believe his contract was due to expire and he’s most likely well on the way to recovery. Which should leave us with a good assessment of his injury/recovery.

On the other hand we could have let him and Simpson leave on for free and splashed either loads on a second choice RB or spent little and signed a dud.

We know he’s limited but he’s still young and has potention. We also know what he’s capable of and as back-up he’s competent.

Good lad. Gets slagged off on here despite playing well this season. Not sure what’s so strange about getting him on a new contract now too. His injury is not seen as career threatening, he is at the point in a footballing contract (18 months left) where a new contract needs to be offered or wound down, he’s young, good in the air, has a good first touch (copes well with the balls from Kasper), can tackle and is happy in a squad rotation and is a good utility option. No brainer for me.

He was starting to look really assured before his injury, and allowed us to play Ricardo further forwards which gave us a bit more attacking threat. Particularly as he has the flexibility to drop into a back 3 when Ricardo and Chilwell both pushed forward at the same time.

He's young, steady, and seemingly happy to be a squad player across several positions. Not sure how long his old contract had left, but extending it is a good decision, particularly as he's going to be on a (relatively) modest wage compared to the rest of the squad.

Timing is strange but probably gets us a much fairer wage in the long run considering his injury situation at the moment.

Thought he was fantastic the few games before his injury and I really think he does have a future here. Less likely to be a recurring injury compared to the Matty James case

Yeah. I think he's been pretty unlucky. He was playing well just before he got injured.

IIRC, the exact same thing happened to him last season. I think he had a few good games at RB last season before he got injured. Can anyone else remember this?

I've spent the last two days being mocked for rubbishing Soyuncu and Choudhury.

Well, I'm delighted with this.  I think he's got it. Sufficient pace, strength, good touch, doesn't seek the easy option and - the key thing I look for in a player -/prepared to receive the ball under pressure.  He was growing into the RB role before that horrible day.

And, at the risk of more mockery, if he can nail RB for now....he'll eventually develop into a fine centre half for us.

Injured or not, this is good news. Not sure why people are so disparaging of it. Amartey is by no means the best player in the squad but he's got more than enough about him to be a squad player at this level and, before his injury, was heading very much in the right direction.
