Spent a lot of time at university listening to this guy: Billy Sheehan.

Pure shred bass. Absurd. His fingers must be rock solid.

Paul Simonon - Terrible bass player, but looked brilliant.

Edit - to add...Bruce Foxton

Sound and attitude are as important as technique – JJ had both.

- Norman Watt-Roy (Dury & Blockheads, Wilko Johnson)

- Steve Hanley (The Fall)

- Jah Wobble (PIL, solo/projects)

- Tina Weymouth (Talking Heads)

- Bootsy Collins (James Brown)

- Robbie Shakespeare (Black Uhuru)

- David McClymont (Orange Juice)

Edit: add Cait O'Riordan (Pogues) for same reasons as @Line-X with Simonon - not an exceptional bassist, but cool as fvck in a top quality band in which musical expertise wasn't at a premium...

Saw him in concert sometime around Niacin - think he was with the DT guy. He can certainly play.

How did I miss JJ from my list. The Stranglers were such an underrated band.
