I don't think we'd line in either of those formations, but could well be wrong.

I'd expect it to look more like this:

I posted it yesterday, but it was removed when the forum rolled back.

I think this formation would help get the best out of Barnes.

I'm guessing he'll be the rotation option with Perez. This allows him to play more centrally & it's where he performed best for WBA.

I expect Maddison would be free to roam to the flanks as well to create overloads

Maddison could drift left and Perez to roam  right to give sort of a 433?

An easily deployed inplay formation/tactic if required

Yeah he might even have a free role of sorts in the system.

Here's what the system looked like for Liverpool:

Anyway it's all speculation at the moment. But that's my prediction for what we will see at times this season. I think even if Praet had been here for months that we wouldn't play the diamond against Wolves. They are a good technical team that will look to play and not just counter. We might use it against Sheffield United, but also might not use it properly until the Newcastle home game.

You're the go to man for tactic and stuff. Have you got any in depth info about how the midfield diamond works? What type of teams is it effective against? How would we be likely to play in it tempo-wise? Is it good for pressing?

I have no idea about any of this and would appreciate any help anyone can offer so I can prepare myself for the pornography Brendan is going to present us with :)

I will definitely make a thread on it during the season. I’m holding off for now simply because I don’t know! He did use it at Liverpool but that was a totally different set of players. So rather than write some garbage that turns out to be false, I’m going to watch us use it first then make the thread.

It looked pretty poor when used against Stoke although we did eventually win that game quite convincingly. But that was the first time it was used so I wouldn’t draw too many conclusions from it yet.

At Liverpool the most interesting thing about the system was that it created a style that I can best describe as an “attacking counter-attack” type of play. They scored a lot of goals by winning the ball mid to high up the pitch then transitioning to an attacking position very quickly.

If only we had a striker that thrived in such situations...

Quite happy with this, even if we now have a million midfielders. Maddison, Tielemans and Praet all have good technique and are very comfortable on the ball in tight spaces; Brendan definitely wants to control the midfield.

Excited to see it live and even more excited for the thread! :jump:

This is a good one to read in the meantime. You can see again some of the tinkering he did in specific games for good results, e.g. he swapped Sterling for Coutinho against Man United at the time as they didn't use a holding midfielder and to give them more pace, etc.

I think you're spot on. From West Brom reports it was by far his favoured position as opposed to being on the wing. Preseason tends to suggest that Perez is a lively hardworking individual who pops up everywhere and may be a great role model for him. Barnes appears to be similar and I think given a chance this season in the way you suggest will by next season seem like yet another multimillion pound young prospect.

I think it also shows what a high tempo he wants at all times, and for that, we will need to see some rotation or earlier substitutions as players will be at full throttle and that's hard to sustain over 90mins and cup games etc. Maybe Mendy and Silva are still going to be used here, especially in the cup games  :dunno:

Pr-art according to Dorsett ... who claims to have actually asked the question re pronunciation.

That's how I pronounced it on talkSPORT last night having taken guidance from a European football expert journalist.

I think his name will be mentioned by broadcasters a lot today.

Got a feeling I'm gonna love this guy. I've always had a soft spot for the understated players who keep it ticking in midfield. Think this guy could be the new Garry Parker.

Could be our Carrick! Extremely comfortable on the ball, keeps things moving but also can pick a pass and likes to move it forward.

I read that he likes to keep the ball and drive forward with it too, which would be great to have a CM capable of beating players and not always playing the simple pass as we see from Mendy/N'didi.

Very excited to see him play, but he will of course need time to settle. Hopefully Choudary still gets plenty of game time too, as he has been brilliant in pre-season. Interesting to see how N'didi looks on his return too. Our midfield is looking great!

Not been paying attention, thank goodness, but this one feels like an if more than a when - or has something has consequence happened?

We're planning ahead. Praet is the "soyuncu" for Maddison when he goes to one of the "big 6" for 100m next summer.

That's one thing we've got really smart at. We replace players before we sell them, we only let one first team leave per season and we get mega bucks for them.

Whom did we sign to replace Mahrez before he left?
