That half against Southampton is completely backing up my post! We are a far worse side without YT!

In all fairness he made some class touches when he came on.

:scarf:

And yet we went from level to losing when he was on the pitch.

He is class but he is slow, which is why as a late sub he'll always look better than as a starter. Praet played well and tired badly in the second half. I'd give Praet another start against Burnley and hope that BR has enough time to help the new midfield/team meld together. Tielemans like Barnes and Gray looks better as a second half sub.

He's not suited the position BR played him last night. He still made a couple of nice passes and had that lovely shot on target but his defensive weaknesess and lack of speed hurt us yesterday. Ricardo was obviously under instructions to get up as often as possible - which is a good idea as that is when he is destructively dangerous - but when he goes up the mid needs to drop back and cover. Tielemans couldn't do that and is too slow for any breaks. Hamza would have been the ideal man to play that box to box role. With Maddison so dynamic and dangerous in midfield I'm not sure that Youri has a place at the moment but hopefully his class will shine through and prove me wrong.

Agree about defensive weakness. Probably should have gone with two "tacklers" yesterday. The lead up to Villa's first goal, Tielemans doesn't challenge on the half way line, which is an important part, where Hamza/Ndidi/Mendy would have.

There was a couple times where Tielemans didn't track their man either and Ricardo was isolated. Compared to Grealish for example who was back and doubling up with Targett.

Or Praet, if Rodgers still wanted attacking nous. Honestly I don't see what Rodgers wants more of from Praet

I thought he played well last night.

The first 15 minutes it might have been Maddison getting the scoring chances but make no mistake Tielemans was absolutely running that game, everything was going through him.

The first Villa goal was so against the run of play it knocked everybody for six and we didn’t fully recover the rhythm thereafter. That said even in the second half almost all of our best moves involved a clever 5-10 yard forward pass from Tielemans to break the lines.

Defensively he still made more tackles than Wilf and the same number of interceptions and even through his poor run on the ball in December he was still producing a lot of good work defensively. Where he does struggle is that he is very slow by modern elite football levels which never looks good when we get hit on the counter attack.

Hes being asked to do a different job to the one he was doing at the end of last season. Why, I’m not sure - Rodgers seems to be specialising in tactical oddities at the moment.

I bet they lose something like 50% of them

Well Wilf is back and that helps but our lack of physicality still shines through . As I keep saying aspiring to the Man. City way of playing may be a fine thing but we are a long way from their standard at the moment. Maybe in a couple of years. In the meantime when push comes to shove we get out-muscled . When Hamza gets picked everybody cries too defensive but at least he reinforces our soft midfield and covers both full backs. We are making loads of chances(and not taking them) our creativity is good even if our strikers are not clinical enough. Defensively though our rock solid early season form has gone and that gives even limited teams like Villa all the chances they need to mug us.

Think Praet deserves to start ahead of him at the minute.

Play Praet though and Tielemans is totally without a job so what is the point of him?.We didn't pay 30 million for him to sit on the bench. Praet though is definitely superior in defense but no Hamza.

The fee paid should never be considered when we are picking a team.

It has to be done on merit.

He sits much deeper for Belgium, ticking things along playing simple forward balls. Obviously some top quality in front of him for Belgium which helps. He seems stuck in the middle in terms of positioning, added with the fact he is covering out wide too on occasion. Don't think Rodgers is getting the best out of him. Lot of pressure on him to be our leader, but he is only 22 and needs time to develop that side of his game.

Tielemans looked really unfit to me last night, it was like he was running through treacle at times - very slow and laboured. One of the squad, Chilly I think, said he was in the gym early doors before training everyday. I don’t know what he’s doing in there but he needs reign it in, it doesn’t seem to be helping him.

He's just not very fast...although I'd be surprised if you've only just noticed that haha.

I thought he had his best game in a while yesterday, very rarely took more than 2 touches and played some wonderful passes.

I think he's just generally slow compared to others in the squad. Maybe needs tips off Vardy or Cags about speed on the pitch!

That shot of his though. I was waiting for the net to ripple but that cvnt of a keeper got his cvnty fingers on it!

Ha no, I’ve not just noticed this but I did think he struggled to keep up a bit last night. I’m not saying he didn’t play well though, he was better than he has been recently. I guess it’s like me thinking Kelechi is really slow when we’re used to Vardy bombing forward at speed. It’s not that he’s slow, he just has different aspects to his game - speed not being one of them.

I dunno, I just think Youri looks a bit, dare I say it, overweight? 😬

Seems like the usual witch hunt over players after a loss in this thread at the moment. Tielemans has had plenty of bad games this season, but last night was not one of them. He was running the game for large periods of time and was unlucky not to score. Sure he misplaced some passes, but that's part and parcel for a deep lying play maker who is trying to be creative. Between him and Maddison we created countless opportunities but a combination of an inspired goalkeeper and some unlucky finishing cost us.

At the end of the day we were minutes away from a penalty shootout which could have got us through, and it was a defensive brain fart that cost us there.

I wasn't slating his performance personally, just needed to be stronger for me on half way line. That challenge in that position is key leading up to the goal.

Basic criticism isn't a witch hunt.
