England squad announcement - Euro 2020 qualifiers 07/11

Recommended Posts

that's what i mean. maddison and grealish aren't "up against" anyone in the squad, they're up against the system. if we played a box to box all action midfielder like grealish then he'd be the best person in the country to play there. but we don't. if we played anyone who can dribble and pick out a pass in the midfield then maddison would be the first name on the teamsheet, but we don't.

Our midfield doesn't do anything which is the issue.

Rice sits there and attempts to sweep but is about as useful as farting in a colander. Henderson runs a lot and can pick a pass out once a month, and Mount is decent but can't operate with no midfield support.

If he wants to play Rice then so be it, but he then needs to compensate with 2 midfielders with passing ability, Henderson has an engine. I would love to see him try 2 of Mount, Maddison and Ox, but we won't see that ever.

Bizarre reasoning from Southgate about Grealish, was very similar what he said about Maddison only being a number 10 and England not playing with one. Truth is Grealish should be competing with Maddison and Mount but Gareth will wait until it's too difficult to ignore Grealish rather than reward him earlier.

The issue with Barkley is in the last few games for England he's finally making an impact so he's in on international form alone. Fine if he keeps it up but he probably won't. The Ox deserves to be in, I love him.

Maybe Gareth is performing some form of top 6 tapping up.

i.e.; "Madders lad, get yourself off to Man Utd, and you might find yourself on the Old Trafford and the Wembley pitch"

I sometimes wonder exactly the same thing. Part of a plot to maintain the Premiership status quo.

This from tonight's evening standard

"Alli left in limbo after omission from qualifiers"

...........Southgate opted instead to include James Maddison despite controversy surrounding his withdrawal from last months squad"

It the goes on to talk all about how Alli has made a comeback playing in spurs last 5 games and finishes with....."Maddison's inclusion comes after he was pictured in a Leicester casino on the night England were beaten by the czech republic"

Ok so it is a London paper, and has always had a bit of bias towards the north London clubs and spurs in particular but this is gutter journalism at its worse and just fuels the  feudalism. Whoever James Olley who wrote the piece is he should check his facts before writing such garbage which is almost verging on slander.

Maddison did not "withdraw" from the squad he was sent home because they did not want hinm to spread his virus to the rest and the tone of the piece at the end there is almost implying that it was his fault that England lost.

Never expected the Standard to come and say that a spurs player has been left out because he is cr*p but this really takes the biscuit. I almost choked reading this on the tube home from work.

This would hold more strength if he didn't continue to pick Barkley. I can't see us doing much in the Euros anyway to be honest. The point about us folding against anyone decent is by and large true.

I know Choudhury / Foden aren’t getting games but neither is Barkley. Whats the difference? Both of them are talented enough & Gareth has put Mount / Abraham in the squad after a few PL appearances.

Barkley usually plays quite decently for England. Safe pair of hands, better the devil you know, etc etc.

Not saying that's a good reason to start him but you asked for a reason why he's in the squad over Hamza/Foden.

Kyle Walkers omission is baffling, only one right back in the squad who regularly plays in that position.

Maybe he's upset Southgate.

Guess we'll have to wait for the book.

Alexander-Arnold and Trippier are in the squad. Has Trippier not been playing right back at Atletico?

He means he's the only right back that regularly plays in goal. Glad I could clear this up

The 'full' squad posted by @Mike Oxlong looks to have copied incorrectly as it has some listed twice (Tomori, Maddison) and others not listed at all (Trippier, Mount). Maybe @notnow john was looking at that one instead?

Reckon Henderson, O'connell and Lundstram from Sheff United should have been called up. Joint best defence in the league and can't even get a look in, must be quite demoralising.

Lundstram plays midfield, but yeah he's been on form.

lundstrum ffs. people seem to forget that these squads aren't just squads for this month, they are one of the very few opportunities the team and manager get to play with each other and become a better team. just because someone got 20 points in fantasy football doesn't mean he's getting an england cap. what would be the point? he's never been anywhere near good enough before and he definitely isn't going to be good enough to go to the euros. it'd just be a massive waste of time for everyone apart from him.

Here's the official announcement. For clarity. Note the 'legacy numbers' that the FA will start using as of the 1000th England game versus Montenegro indication. Each player is assigned a numerical number upon their first senior cap that will stick with them and will be printed on their shirts from now on (the first ever England player is #1 and whomever gets their next England debut will be #1245. Apparently it will be policy from hereon out to present squad announcements by legacy number instead of alphabetically or by position. Just FYI.

Henry Winter (who I usually agree with) saying Maddison shouldn't have been included because of the casino thing.

England don't play for four months after next week so you can't rule out players now- pick them when available and on form. Maddison will probably apologise and then move on, you can't treat it like a naughty step.
