Well, history has shown that brutal authoritarians don't often let a good crisis go to waste, so yes...this could be worrying.

 

However, on the flip side there does seem to be increasing demand for the kind of healthcare and workplace reform that is sorely needed in the US.

Australia.. isnt officially in lockdown... but have just introduced Drones and $5000 fines. Also threats of electronic detection if caught outside

Just saw a news story of police driving through city parks pushing people out of the park

I do find it odd that the major industrial cities in china have only had a handful of deaths from the virus. Bejing: 8 deaths, Shanghai 5 deaths, Guangdong 8 deaths. These are some of the most densely populated cities on earth and surely must be a million times more likely to allow a virus spread than somewhere like Leicester.

I wouldn’t put much faith in the Chinese government to be honest.

I find the prospect of state socialism extremely unlikely and I don’t like to think about what kind of upheaval and destruction it would take to get there from this stage. It would take a complete  change of government and in this context you’d expect a level of implicit violence in that scenario. 
 

The aspect of mutualism is a lot more realistic, and that will be the biggest  cultural shift in this country since Thatcher in my opinion. A lot more local co-operatives and regionalism. It can work within our current political structure as well.

I think the optimism that this is the exogenous shock that we need for a change to our society is akin to the optimism of a football fan before the start of a season where their team finishes 17th.

They’ll be a lot of questions and a lot of requests when the smoke clears and they’ll have to play their hand straight. It’ll be a very rough path for them either way.

I hope it goes back to just being a trading bloc, hopefully with us involved, hopefully still with as much freedom of movement as possible. Unfortunately I think it may try to use this situation to go for deeper union, citing 'more Europe' as the solution to the crisis.
