No political discussion in this topic. That is complaining about a country, a politician, a party and/or its voters, etc

7 hours later, the figure for Italy is 230+.

I'm not saying that anyone should panic. Too many people are panicking (bog roll!).

This will probably turn out nowhere near as bad as the worst expectations and may not be as bad as middle-of-the-road predictions. But it has the potential to be very serious, so people should see it a serious risk and act with caution (not panic).

Having a good "grasp of numbers" isn't just about looking at the current figure. It's also about trajectory......145->230+ in 7 hours.....and there's a similar trajectory in UK infections (not deaths - yet).

If someone said "Leicester City are on great form. They won their last match", you wouldn't think they had a great "grasp of numbers", would you? I'd think they were being a bit short-sighted.

And yet, this is the current form indicator of a large section of our fans.

Oh sure. I would be the last person to hold my hands up in defence of the moral justice of Mother Nature. You only have to look at the world to know that she is an absolute bitch. Doubtless it would be better to line up all the jet-settin', meat-eatin', car-drivin', money-worshippin' freaks out there and club the to death with a smelly sandal and half a courgette, but maybe that would present its own problems.

Excuse me. I must climb into my private jet and try to track down some feckin' soap. I'm down to my last nub. At this rate I'll have to boil two pigs and saponificate my own.

Calm down mate. I was just pointing out that the previous posters claims of this (coronavirus) actually "cleansing the population" to decrease climate change is slightly flawed.

Was reading the story about the 25 year old Welsh teacher who caught it in China and how it wiped him out for two weeks, sounds rough so I can understand why it hits the elderly so hard.

Presumably that means anyone in ICU rather than just Covid-19 patients. So if you're old and have a heart attack then you're essentially ****ed and I'd guess these secondary mortality effects won't be insignificant but will go unnoticed in the data.

I am hoping some of the clinical trials for which we will soon have data show something promising. Remdisivir seems to be the hope because its been effective against other coronaviruses in vitro but I guess production is still an issue and Gilead would have to issue licenses for others to produce it

I know there are lies, damned lies and statistics but for balance

People from 105 countries have been infected.  Total population of those countries is over 4 billion.

Just over 107,000 of 4,000,000,000 have got/had covid-19.

Statistically that is insignificant.  Just over 3600 have died, again statistically insignificant.

Fewer people have it today than had it 3 weeks ago 42k v 58k

More people have recovered from it than currently have it. 61k v 57k

It is going to get worse,  it will come in waves of getting worse and getting better.  But this isn't the end of the world as we know.

Btw anyone got any andrex?

The fact they have announced it will happen without implementing it instantly will be a disaster.

People fleeing all over the country and the borders aren’t that tight around that part of the world either.

China has published all they know about the virus including their current treatment protocols here, it’s the best we have so far.

https://www.chinalawtranslate.com/en/coronavirus-treatment-plan-7/

Looks like there are a fair few antivirals being used. They also recommend plasma from recovered patients (containing antibodies) for severe cases. Obviously that’s going to be much harder to source in the UK until well into the course of the outbreak.

If nothing else, this probably clearly indicates my decision to mostly avoid these more-serious type of threads is probably wise. My response wasn't really intended to be any other than a bit of light ribbing (sorry, clearly failed in that), and a swipe at the hypocrisy (my own included) that generally creeps into things when we start up with our judgments whilst remaining completely oblivious to our own lifestyles. Fear not, I will tell tell my slightly-inclined eyebrow to calm itself down.

apparently because the numbers have gone down in China they can't get enough people into trials. Their are 200 trials. how many are there happening in Italy.

Some hiv drugs are working too so that gives us hope of some treatments even if they aren't perfect

Any Foxestalk members caught it yet? We're a pretty global network so chances it won't be long...

Thing is, I'm not entirely sure we'd know if we had it.

I hold a 'cold' two weeks ago that involved a mild fever for the first two days (unusual for a cold, no?),  cleared up on the Wednesday (unusual ish...no snot or runny nose)  and then got a mild chest infection on Saturday that's persisted til today...cold, flu, bronchitis, Corona...who knows? 😂

Probably a super spreader.

If you’re desperate for Toilet Roll just go to Funland in Bridlington

I’d rather catch Corona and have to wipe my arse with my hand than go to Bridlington.

The whole panic around toilet roll baffles me. People are still using it at the same rate, the supply chain is still pretty intact so supermarkets are still getting deliveries, and its not even close to selling out in most places anyway.

Went to tesco earlier and the only things sold out were hand sanitiser (and every type of wipe that could possibly substitute for it) and all the pasta. Except linguine, so if you like linguine I guess you're okay? No-one had even touched any of the other staples like rice though, strangely.

Oh, and no Ben and Jerrys either. Guess people are comfort eating whilst in isolation? Different people have different priorities, I guess...

Plenty of flights leaving Milan airports today ..... strangest lockdown I’ve ever seen!  The Chinese are able to do it properly ......we in the west are unable to do what they did

Talks of trains still leaving as well, it will probably do the opposite of what they want.

Bulk buying bog roll is entirely normal at Tesco for some of the Asian community at the Beaumont leys store.
