Wes Morgan on course for 10th season with club as contract talks 'ongoing'

The Leicester City captain is third oldest outfield player in the Premier League this season, but is set to remain at the King Power Stadium until he is 37 with a new deal being discussed

Leicester City skipper Wes Morgan is in talks over a new contract that will keep him at the King Power Stadium for a 10th season.

Morgan will turn 37 next term, but manager Brendan Rodgers wants to keep the title-winning centre-back at the club to provide reliable cover on the pitch and “drive the standard” off it.

Morgan is a highly-respected member of the City squad and Rodgers has routinely praised his impact behind-the-scenes at the club.

But the boss knows Morgan can still do a job when called upon, much like Christian Fuchs, another long-serving defender who is also in discussions over a new deal.

Both signed 12-month contracts shortly after Rodgers first joined City a year ago, with those deals expiring this summer.


“It’s ongoing,” said Rodgers on contract talks for Morgan and Fuchs. “Both of those players have been immense for me in the time here.

“It’s not just on the pitch, it’s their qualities off the pitch that are very important.

“Your senior players, it’s so important you have them to drive the standard you create and set as the leader, and both of those guys have been first class with me for that.

“But of course, you want them to be able to produce on the pitch as well and if you look at Christian in the game the other day, he was first class.

“It’s ongoing, the negotiations with them, and we’ll see where it takes us.”

 

Morgan is already the third oldest outfield player in the Premier League, with only Sheffield United’s Phil Jagielka and Brighton’s Glenn Murray ahead of him.

He joined City from hometown club Nottingham Forest for £1m in January 2012 and has made 309 appearances for the club, placing him 27th on the all-time list.

Not got a problem with this, he never lets us down under Rodgers, likewise Fuchs. There was a time I would have liked both moved on but that was because I didn't believe they were worthy of being first choice any longer but both have understood their roles now within the team and club and they are invaluable in what they do on and off the pitch.

As long as he gets nowhere near the starting XI, I have no issue with him being kept around the place. Rodgers signed Bennett I think because he lost faith in Morgan on the pitch to come in and shore games up so perhaps he's being kept to help bring on the youngsters and as a thank you for his past achievements.

Well it was Morgan on the bench against Man City so not sure where your lost faith comes in.

I'm not denying being kept for experience but there comes a time when they should be let go. Can't just be kept for sentimental reasons.

Exactly. He is probably on a very good wage that could be used elsewhere for a proper winging who should be brought in. Coaching role no problem to maintain a spirit with the players. But let's be honest how many on here cringe when he has the ball in defense while being pressed. Panics and gives it away every time. Also attackers just walk around him right now. Again coaching role, yes. Player with a huge wage absolutely no. Use money wisely

Never understood why we have never sang this... 

Unless you have an ounce of pace or reasonable quick feet or are pretty decent in the air. Can’t take away what he has achieved but he is far from a great defender. Personally I wouldn’t want to see him coaching our young players technically

I could have used any example it's just the OP mentioned Kompany.

 

Chelsea didn't keep their greatest player around (Lampard) or Terry, Fergie never kept Bruce or Neville knocking around.

 

Got to push on as a club. Similar to the Fuchs situation. Okay, he's decent backup but how is that pushing Chilwell?

 

I absolutely love Wes, our greatest captain and he should have a statue, but at 36 years old now we should be looking at centre backs to come in.

I don't think he's lost any faith whatsoever,  in fact he's said the exact opposite. So, unless you know Rodgers personally and he's confided in you and told you that he was lying to the press, I would suggest that there's a large dose of personal supposition in what you say. In any case, when Wes has come on he's done absolutely fine. When Bennett was available former selection against Man City, Rodgers still put Wes on the bench,  that doesn't look to mean like a loss of faith.

The ‘he hates Forest’ chant one of the worst ever.

He absolutely loves Forest and you’d think it makes him cringe like **** every time it gets sung.

As I said in the Fuchs thread, Brendan Rodgers appreciates having experienced players around for what they bring to the club.

BR flexing his impressive man management muscles again.

Morgan, of course, may decide he wants to play more regularly but lower down the pyramid.

Then again, he might see this as a stepping stone to coaching at LCFC.

Who’s told you he loves forest? He’s told me himself he hates forest.

Umm ... I think you might have missed this, but he was signed to provide cover so that Benkovic can go on loan to Bristol City. Not cover for Morgan.
