Hints that it's more down to his influence around that club that as a regular player. To be expected, but hope it doesn't lessen our pursuit of another CB

I don't feel too good about re-signing him as a player tbh, we pay him very large wages. Would be happy if he were willing to drop down to being a manager and seriously reduce his salary, but if he won't do that, I guess it's alright to keep him as a player. I think he's finished though, he looked dodgy against whichever team we played (Brentford?) where we started Benkovic, and they were not playing their first team either.

But as we've seen this year, excluding injuries and suspensions, he doesn't play for more than 10-15 minutes.  Is there anything in that article that suggests he is or isn't taking a wage cut?

He's being offered an extension more for the off the field help and experience than his on pitch play. Frankly experienced heads off the pitch are important for keeping things running smoothly.

His pace will be almost none existent. I'd imagine him playing with Soyuncu (cover for Evans) would be the ideal scenario as Caglar could bail him out with his super pace.

Looks like we'll be in the market for a CB in the summer as a couple of injuries would leave us very short.

Oh I agree it's a good idea to keep him here I'd just much prefer we started to train him up as a manager. He's nearly 38 not sure how useful it will be to keep him as a player.

Disagree. I thought that in general last year when he played, he played well. You have to accept that usually, when a defender comes on in the dying minutes of a game, to fit in immediately is a difficult task. As for people mentioning his pace, well in fairness he's never had any. Neither have many top quality centre backs and their skill is more about positioning and reading of the game at which, Wes has been very good. For every Ferdinand you need a Vidic and you certainly wouldn't want two Maguires. You wouldn't call Van Dyke pacey either because it's not his game. Lest we forget, when Maguire got injured, a defence of Morgan and Evan's arguably let less goals in and looked more solid. If Evans got injured, I think Wes and Soyuncu would be fine. What we don't need it to spend big on another mediocre centre just because he's younger. Clearly Wes is at the end of his career but he remains better than several other Premiership centre halves.

We may well be; if he's interested in coaching etc I'd bet he's taking part in coaching younger groups or helping younger players.

I don't think we can underestimate his presence on the pitch. We're 1-0, holding a lead in the last 10 minutes and your club captain of 300+ games comes on to help defend that lead. How much of a boost would that be to the team knowing such an experienced pro is coming on to help lead from the back.

Benkovic played against Wigan. Morgan was subbed off after 26 minutes.

Against Brentford, he played alongside Soynuncu and suffered a knock but they chose to keep him on.

I look at this as being positive. If we can offer a 37/38 YO a contract in these difficult financial times, then we must be flush and in no danger whatsoever in terms of short term future revenue expectations

If however, this prevents in any way whatsoever the progress of a young third choice CB, then I see this as massively negative and consider the lock-down may be affecting decisions within the Club....

Bringing him on to defend a lead with '0' minutes to go is not a good tactic. Just invites pressure.

Wes is our title-winning captain so deserves a contract. He's been fine whenever he's played and still has a role to play. That said, from a business point of view you would expect it to be on slightly lower terms. If he earns £60k a week now, re-signing on £40k - £45k a week seems fair as it recognises his immense contribution to the club but is also an acknowledgement that he is not going to be a regular starter. Just my opinion!

It was a joke aimed at how long it could be before next season starts given a chunk of people don't believe professional sport should return until a vaccine is rolled out.

Can’t see the contract being huge. He’s the club captain, very well respected by the team and clearly they want to keep him around. I doubt it’ll prevent us from strengthening at CB, unless they see Wes as a stop gap for a year to strengthen elsewhere. Had we signed Bennett (permanently) or Demiral then I still think we’d have offered Wes another year.

Benkovic could well be on his way out too freeing up wages.

He'll be 38 in January 2022.

Too many here seem to think a footballer's pace works like it does in FIFA, and falls off a cliff once they hit 35. He has never been Mertesacker-level slow, and has improved massively since Puel (and Evans) came in in terms of reading the game.

You'll struggle to find a fourth choice centre back of Morgan's quality happy to play a half a dozen times a season. He is the captain, massively important to the dressing room, he has the big game Champions League experience. I imagine we will bring in a younger player to challenge Evans and Cags, and then those three plus probably Fuchs and maybe even Josh Knight may be ahead of Wes in the pecking order.

More than anything, the bloke deserves a send off just as Shinji and Simpson got last season. I'd be gutted for Morgan, Fuchs, or even King to leave without trace.

He's worth another year as he is influential as club captain and would be great in a coaching role eventually.

Even if he is on the bench for the early rounds of the league cup it's worth having him around on modest wages.

Agreed. It's quite clear to see that every single manager we've had sees him as a valuable asset to have in the squad and not just on the pitch any more. Obviously a great role model to youngsters and clearly a good influence on the rest of the squad.
