Wes Morgan on course for 10th season with club as contract talks 'ongoing'

I look at this as being positive. If we can offer a 37/38 YO a contract in these difficult financial times, then we must be flush and in no danger whatsoever in terms of short term future revenue expectations

If however, this prevents in any way whatsoever the progress of a young third choice CB, then I see this as massively negative and consider the lock-down may be affecting decisions within the Club....

Bringing him on to defend a lead with '0' minutes to go is not a good tactic. Just invites pressure.

Either that or we’ve got no cash and this is the maguire replacement 😂

Oh I agree it's a good idea to keep him here I'd just much prefer we started to train him up as a manager. He's nearly 38 not sure how useful it will be to keep him as a player.

He's not interested in Management and isn't doing any coaching qualifications. States in the interview he's doing Business Management courses and would be looking at that side of things, Corporate Governance etc.

Disagree. I thought that in general last year when he played, he played well. You have to accept that usually, when a defender comes on in the dying minutes of a game, to fit in immediately is a difficult task. As for people mentioning his pace, well in fairness he's never had any. Neither have many top quality centre backs and their skill is more about positioning and reading of the game at which, Wes has been very good. For every Ferdinand you need a Vidic and you certainly wouldn't want two Maguires. You wouldn't call Van Dyke pacey either because it's not his game. Lest we forget, when Maguire got injured, a defence of Morgan and Evan's arguably let less goals in and looked more solid. If Evans got injured, I think Wes and Soyuncu would be fine. What we don't need it to spend big on another mediocre centre just because he's younger. Clearly Wes is at the end of his career but he remains better than several other Premiership centre halves.

I thought he was ok for most of last season but in particular against the lower league team we played in the cup, Benkovic's first game, I felt that he was out of his depth. And that's scary considering they weren't playing their first team or anything. Not to mention the injury he suffered in that very game potentially setting him back further (has he featured since then?)

Also, I understand your point but van Dijk has incredible pace, he outran Traore earlier this season.

Well in that case I guess it makes sense to re-sign him as a player, although I'd be cautious about considering him as anything more than 5th choice.

Pace can be deceptive at times as a player may just have a 'running start' over another. I think on at least one occasion, Wesalowski in the stats, showed up to be one of the fastest players of the week yet, those of us that watched him regularly knew that in reality, he was hardly a speed merchant. I would think for example that if Van Dyke and Traore were to have a 100yds standing sprint, that the latter would win. Pace is also deceptive in that on the whole, a centre half not only is of a larger build but plays mainly with his back to goal and should a player get round them or be running onto a ball, then to turn and catch up is a big ask. Good centre halves sometimes negate that happening because of thought and positioning and Wes has usually been very good at that over the years. Some, like him, will also struggle a bit when playing a higher line. In the game Benkovic played he looked nieve and was guilty perhaps of trying too hard at times (understandably) and left Wes exposed. This, compared to a partnership of say Evans and Morgan who, through experience, would complement and cover each other. Just my thoughts.

Whilst I can agree with most of what you say, especially perception of pace, I would like to reiterate that van Dijk is genuinely very, very fast, he just doesn't often need to display it.

Too be honest, I wouldn't disagree with you as I probably haven't watched him enough closely to notice so I will take it he is. As you rightly point out, part of me not noticing it is that he perhaps rarely needs to use it due to his talent of reading the game and positioning, he rarely seems ruffled or hurried which is the sign of a very good centre half.

Take a bow Wesley, outstanding. Leicester legend.

There's always talk before matches that he'll come in and we'll be all over the place. Yet again he steps in and does his job.

No drama for the big man. Comes in, does the job, leads the troops to victory. Piece of piss.

He was fantastic today. A true leader who didn't let us collapse under pressure.

He needs to play the final two games.
