£1BILLION dream team of the most expensive English talents?

Recommended Posts

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-8402057/Who-makes-English-dream-team-expensive-talent.html

This week saw new eye-watering figures released that claimed four of the top five most valuable young players in the world are all from British shores.

In research compiled by the CIES Football Observatory, Kylian Mbappe is worth an estimated £231million in today's market, closely followed by four English stars in Raheem Sterling, Jadon Sancho, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Marcus Rashford.

So that begs the question - who else would make the cut in an English XI of the most valuable young players? Here, Sportsmail takes a look...

Goalkeeper: Dean Henderson, Sheffield United / Manchester United (£50million)

Typically, goalkeepers are not worth as much as outfield players. Indeed, if you look down the list of the world's most valuable players, you have to get to No 33 before you reach the first shot-stopper - Manchester City's Ederson at £77.3m.

But England have an impressive young keeper of their own on the rise in Sheffield United's Dean Henderson. Although not listed on CIES's top 100 just yet, it is believed Manchester United rate their on-loan star at £50m.

At just 23 years old, the keeper has burst onto the scene this season and has been one of the Blades' stand-out players. His future is as yet unclear - he may stay at Bramall Lane for another season before trying to oust David de Gea at Old Trafford - but his future for both club and country is certainly bright.

Left back: Ben Chilwell, Leicester (£85m)

Chelsea are reportedly keen to swoop for Leicester's star full back in a deal worth up to £85m. That makes him easily the most promising young left back in English football and unlike the right side, he looks set to have less competition as he makes the spot his own under Gareth Southgate.

Also 23, he has enjoyed a stunning campaign with the Foxes as they look to tie up a Champions League spot for next season. He has played 23 times in the Premier League so far this season, with a couple of goals and three assists beside his name.

Manchester City are another side credited with an interest in his services, while Brendan Rodgers will surely be desperate to keep hold of one of his best players for the years to come.

Centre back: Harry Maguire, Manchester United (£52m)

Although a significant drop on the £80m he cost Manchester United, CIES value Harry Maguire at £52m in the current market. He became the world's most expensive defender when he joined the Red Devils last summer.

There has been heavy scrutiny placed upon him in his debut season at Old Trafford, but it is widely accepted that he is England's best centre back by a distance. United are still well in the race for the top four and if they do make it, Maguire will have been a vital cog in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's machine.

At 27, he is slightly older than some of his team-mates in this dream XI, but he is reaching the peak of his powers and still looks to have plenty of years left at the heart of both his club and country's defence.

Centre back: Declan Rice, West Ham (£57m)

A central midfielder by trade, it would be no surprise to see him drop further back to become a centre back at some stage in his career. Both the player himself and pundits like Jamie Redknapp have teased the switch, and in terms of value he would take a defensive spot in England's dream XI.

At just 21, he plays with a maturity that belies his years in the heart of West Ham's team, dragging them through games and often popping up with a match-winning contribution.

Linked with a host of top clubs every summer, the Hammer is valued by CIES at £57.4m, but it would be no surprise if it took a fee more in the region of £70m to even tempt West Ham into selling their prized asset.

Right back: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Liverpool (£152m)

Although there is plenty of competition for the right back berth in the form of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Reece James, Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier, it says a lot that none of those names really get a look-in, such are the capabilities of Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Rated at a whopping £152.3m in today's market, the Liverpool full back has enjoyed a stunning couple of seasons at Anfield and looks set to add a Premier League title to his Champions League winners' medal at the age of just 21.

His future looks frighteningly promising... he has only 84 Premier League appearances to his name but looks set to be a regular for at least the next decade, providing he can steer clear of injuries. A once-in-a-generation talent.

Left midfield: James Maddison, Leicester City (£58m)

Such is the wealth of attacking talent in the team, Maddison has to be pushed back to a slightly more defensive role than he is currently used to - lining up on the left side of a midfield three.

Currently valued at £57.7m in the transfer market, he is another player that has enjoyed a stunning season and looks set for bigger things at the age of just 23.

He only has one England cap to his name but Southgate is likely to reward the midfielder with plenty more in the months and years to come if he continues on the same career trajectory. This season, he is Leicester's second top-scorer with nine goals, behind only Jamie Vardy.

Centre midfield: Dele Alli, Tottenham (£69m)

Another position with a hefty amount of competition is the centre of midfield, and feasibly it could be argued that in this team, Alli's position would be sought after by Rice, Maddison and Mason Mount. The Spurs man takes it though, with a current market value of £69m.

He is a player with his fair share of critics, but at 24 still has his potential best years in front of him and looks to have cemented his place in Jose Mourinho's Tottenham team. He has played 22 of Spurs' 29 league matches this term, netting eight times and grabbing four assists on top of that.

His England future is arguably less secure, but he is well within Southgate's plans and should his form take an upward trajectory over the next year, a starting spot at the rescheduled Euro 2020 tournament is well within his grasp.

Right midfield: Mason Mount, Chelsea (£91m)

After a brilliant season with Derby in the Championship, Mason Mount followed Frank Lampard back to Stamford Bridge and has immediately earned himself a spot in the Chelsea first-team in the current campaign.

One of the Blues' stand-out performers, he is valued at £91m already and is still only at the start of a potentially long and successful career. He has jumped ahead of Maddison in the England ranks and already has six caps at the tender age of 21.

This season he has played a part in every single one of Chelsea's 29 league games and looks set to continue that when top-flight football returns next week.

Left wing: Raheem Sterling, Manchester City (£173m)

As we move into the front three, we start hitting the big bucks... and Sterling is the epitome of that with his stunning £173.3m value. That is behind only Kylian Mbappe in world football, and the Manchester City man is absolutely at the top of his game.

He has enjoyed another stunning season, scoring 11 times in the Premier League so far, and he already has 250 top-flight appearances to his name despite being only 25.

On the international stage, he is assured of a starting spot for years to come. He has 56 caps to his name now, and will be well into three figures by the time he eventually hangs up his boots.

Striker: Marcus Rashford, Manchester United (£136m)

It may come as a surprise to some that Marcus Rashford takes the main striker role ahead of Harry Kane, but the United man's value is £30m higher according to CIES's latest valuation.

That, of course, will be down to his age, with Rashford 22 and Kane four years his senior at the age of 26. And so, the Spurs man only makes the bench and it is left to Rashford to carry the main goalscoring threat of England's dream team.

For United this season, he has 19 goals in all competitions and he has increased his scoring rate in every season he's played for the club. From eight, to 11, to 13 and now to 19, he only looks set to improve upon it when football returns next week.

Right wing: Jadon Sancho, Borussia Dortmund (£159m)

Only just behind Sterling in the list of top transfer values is man of the moment Jadon Sancho, who continues to shine for Borussia Dortmund this season. With the Bundesliga being the first league to return after the coronavirus, it has been all eyes on Erling Haaland, Sancho and Co.

After leaving Manchester City in 2017, it has been nothing but positive for the Camberwell-born forward, and he has become one of the brightest talents in German football. He is likely to return at some point, and if he does CIES believe it will be for a sum in the region of £159m.

This season, he's netted 17 goals in 28 games and is also becoming a regular for Southgate on the international stage. At the age of just 20, he is one of the youngest players in this dream XI and is set for a huge few years.

Honourable mentions

It seems incredible to have a list of English talent and not include Harry Kane, who has been the talisman for years and looks set to continue at the same level for plenty more to come.

Given he is a few years older than some of his team-mates, he comes in at a slightly lower value. That said, he is still worth £105.7m and easily makes the top five list when it comes to English players. Unfortunately, Rashford is fourth and takes the attacking spot in the 4-3-3 formation.

Elsewhere, Tammy Abraham is also in CIES's top 100 list, coming in at £54.9m. Of course, given the wealth of attacking options, he too doesn't quite make the cut despite being worth more than Maguire and Henderson, who 7do get in the team courtesy of their defensive capabilities.

Rashford is so overated IMO. Yes he's only young and 22, but he's played in a side that's in and around the top 4 constantly. He scored 14 goals in 22 games this season, which is a brilliant return, but 5 of them (I think) were penalties. He's a good player, but 136 million, nah. I'd much rather have Kane in my team personally, even if he is a greedy bastard.

58 For Maddison yet 91 for Mount.. Do the writers actually watch any football at all? Guess it shows if play for a big club you are valued more. Also shows if play for England vast increase in price looking at Rice. He is not a bad player but 1 mill less than Maddison.. No chance.

I remember after the first game this season where Chelsea lost 4-0 against united, pundits were ripping into mount saying he's not good enough, but some decent form for 2/3rd of a season and he's now worth crazy money. The big club bias in valuations strikes again.

Don't get the fuss about Declan Rice, not seen anything from him for his value to be that much other than the media hype about his switch from Ireland to England.

I like Gomez, think hes a little under rated, looks like he could be a real talent for years if he keeps up his current trajectory.

Mount is only valued that much because he's at Chelsea, switch the teams Maddison and Mount play for and their values would switch too.

The way the media talk about Chilwell just astounds me. Easily our worst player this season and he's talked about like he's the new Messiah.

It’s crazy when you’re third in the league with 9 games to go and people are picking out “worst” players. Deary me. 🤦🏼‍♂️
