Shoppers in line at Primark in Birmingham as non-essential shops in England open their doors to customers for the first time since coronavirus lockdown restrictions were imposed in March.

Are people really this desperate for clothes?

We were historically known as a Nation of Shopkeepers (attributed to Napoleon? ) but it seems we've become this insatiable nation of shoppers and mobile coffee drinkers.

I don't even like waiting in queues unless it's something totally unavoidable.

BCV( before Corona virus) ...I liked Window shopping...dragging my feet around old cities...

But typical  for me ( and a few other men). Why Clothes shops usually use to have Mens Clothes dept. easily available...Many big  shops, lost footfall when like M&S,  they moved the bulk of Mens clothes, upstairs..

I Dont Need the Sales chat,I look,I see...I buy , or not !!

I wouldnt  even now stand /wait in a queue, either for myself, or with my wife.

We are not  that desperate either for clothes,or home Luxury goods... just to get back "in any swing of things"

Even though I am sure many will Scream in delight,I still believe the majority of  Britain will not yet go that crazy .

The media will always crank a full Days Reporting of queueing has being "Normal" and incorrectly the character of the majority...

While most, will be relaxing at home  laughing at the wierdos being shown on TV....:jump:

Just bought a car, done my bit.

What did you buy? I'm currently trying to sell mine but, unsurprisingly, nobody wants to give me anything like it's normal value

Only a Dacia, they weren't knocking much off either.

Whenever I hear this Napoleon quote, I always think that firstly, as insults go, Monsieur Bonaparte really needs to try harder and secondly, didn't they have shops in France then?

I don't think it was meant as an insult, more of a reference to us as a trading nation.

No. it was an attempt by Napoleon to portray Britain as a country with little ambition and to dissmiss our preparedness for war with France.

I will say this - been out in the country near me today and definitely fewer people than before. Keep the shops open, I say.

Also anyone queuing an hour to get into Primark clearly has nothing going for them

Tbf Primark is there and successful for a good reason. It’s cheap. Some of those in queues that is what they can afford.

I’m not seeing the same outrage about queues outside Marks & Spencers or Bicester Village.

The economy should stay smaller, the country has never been so pleasant. The air is better, nature has thrived. Why do we have to have this world of rampant greed and ****ing consumption. The planet is suffering.

Bigger house, better TV, bigger car, more money, buy buy buy use use use.The queues for Mcdonalds and Primark show that we are doomed.

Yep, time away from has done anything but make people realise what they didn’t need.

Need a stronger pandemic next time.

I often ask myself what do I enjoy most about travelling and the lack of consumer culture is high up.

Might seem patronising that I think of such places as old fashioned but it reminds me of my childhood. Simpler life

There is certainly going to be a spending spike for a month or more just like the housing market...

After that though I’m kinda thinking a recession on a scale never seen before is to follow...

A nice book of insurance business or part share in an existing insurance brokerage (anyone looking for some help to grow? Or perhaps looking to wind down/ semi-retire)?

General and property classes favoured. Ta.

Why do you think that? If pubs etc re-open, I think there could be a massive spike.

What a thread full of snobbery

Yeah you’re right, who are we to hold people to our own standards?
Thank god you’re around to stop the judging.

If I'm a snob for looking down on people who shop at cheap disposable clothing places like Primark that just add to our oceans getting full of plastic and microfibres, then call me Hyacinth. Income is not an excuse.

In many cases, income is most definitely an excuse, although turning up to join a queue at opening time on the first day of shopping is probably not.

Human race is eternally doomed. The queue outside of the local Golden Arches when it reopened was unbelievable.... it ended up causing traffic issues.

Yeah bashing people who shop at Primark is a bit weird. Not everyone can afford designer stuff or even the more expensive high street brands.

It is a bit of a false economy buying cheap tat, good quality items generally last much longer and are worth the extra.

The problem with primark is it encourages people to buy lots of cheap stuff so they have lots of clothes that they will only wear a couple of times. Primark is just a symptom of the culture we have created, but that is what we need to get the economy moving.

Hopefully buying a car this week that I can’t afford and with money I haven’t got.

Doing my bit to kick start the economy
