Beating all of the 'big 6' in the 20/21 season - that'd be a first

I absolutely loathe the idea of the 'big six' or 'top six'. It's a complete myth. Most people on this forum weren't born the last time Tottenham won the league.

Agreed when Tottenham last won the league  we were  the second best team in the country could have done the double  2 years later. As a  really long time supporter I have never known how we became little Leicester we paid world record sums at the time  for Lennie Glover  @ Alan Clarke  and huge sums for Weller Birchenall  Steve Earle  and Jon Sammels   who left Arsenal Chelsea and Fulham . With a level playing field the league was much harder  and unlike Tottenham and Newcastle teams like Burnley and Ipswich live in the present and not the past when they won it

Refer to the League table for the top six.  Refer to this graph for the "Big Six".

This graphically shows the massive advantage the richest 6 clubs have.

The difference between West Ham in 7th to Huddersfield in 20th is $90m

The difference between West Ham to Arsenal in 6th is $240m

This isn't a debate about whether Spurs should be considered big because they last won the league in 1961. This is about cold, hard, cash.

Surely all this is nonsense as it is all about what happens on the pitch on the day.

Big Clubs, rich Clubs, ones with huge reputations can and do come unstuck. It really matters not a jot.

You can only play against what's in front of you whether that a team full of "stars" or those having a crisis.

We have proved we are capable of beating anyone so let's get on with the rest of the season and hope the players keep performing as they have done and who knows.

It used to be the Big Five in the 80s and 90. It consisted of Man Utd, Liverpool, Everton, Arsenal and, annoyingly, Tottenham. Man City and Chelsea were nowhere to be seen back then. They were joke clubs like Birmingham and Newcastle, much more likely to go down than win the league.

It only matters in respect of the fact that after every poor season they can re-invest and go again. They start every season with the expectation of finishing top six irrespective of how they performed in the previous one and never have to worry about going down.

Very true. It took billions of pounds of investment, over a short period of time, for Man City and Chelsea to force their way in. We all talk about slow, sustained, investment and sensible growth to compete with the richest six, but it's actually something that's never been done in my lifetime.

I suppose we must be grateful that the term 'Top 6' is being used less frequently these days and replaced with 'Big 6', this in recognition of the serial failures of Spuds and the Arse in very recent seasons.   It's a long slow process and the Bell-ends at Sky Sports are finding it difficult to accept change.

The only true shock was Man City away

Arsenal - they were about 15th when we best them.

Spurs - RodgersBall > MourinhoBall. Easy win

Chelsea - Lampard was about to lose his job. Another easy win.

Liverpool  - huge injury crisis and they lost 4 of their last 5.

Who pissed on your cornflakes? 😂

It would be easier to have it based on profits and club debts. That would swing the table around a bit.

Not really useful as the point of the graphic is how much money we have available to spend on wages and transfers, not to try and get us high as possible. Definitely the competitive fan in you that's coming out there haha

Any records referencing the 'big 6' are only applicable to the last 10 or so years really.

For example, beating Newcastle or Leeds in the late 90s / early 2000s was a better achievement than beating Man City or Spurs.

This is indeed very true. I'm old enough to recall it was a big 4. Then Chelsea came from mid table (second division) mediocrity to the billionaires club to make it a top 5 and Spurs kind of fell into it to make up the 6th because they were title challengers each and every year up until December.

Nah-Big 5 was never a thing. Everton weren’t big in the 90s, and Forest were bigger than Spurs for most of the 80s/90s period. Newcastle also much bigger than either of those two in the 90s, and much much more likely to win the league than Liverpool.

92-Abramovich was big 2: Man U and Arsenal.

Then you can add Chelsea, then Man City.
Liverpool only became a force in the league when Rodgers came in, then progressed in Klopp’s second year. They were miles off until then, and without the 2005 miracle comeback they might never have recovered. Spurs is pure weight of numbers, by being better than the worst of the other 5 every year for ages.

Ceredigion is right, big 5 was a thing and the clubs he mentioned were correct. Representiatves of each of those 5 clubs were in on the creation and formation of the PL.

Everton last won the league in 86, not exactly a million miles away from the 90's, which is why they formed part of the big 5 when the idea came around about the PL.

Liverpool didn't became a force in the league under Rodgers. Houllier finished 2nd/3rd with them multiple times, as did Benitez. They won every trophy except the league in these periods. Benitez did more at the club than Rodgers did.

Well we have done it, kind of. For the very first time completing the 'big 6' hit in a single season with the FA cup win against Manchester United today, on 21st of March 2021.

We get the opportunity to do it as a proper we have beaten the all of the so called big 6 in just the league when we meet them again, soon enough. Lets get that final scalp to grab this season in the league to join the other five already nailed nicely onto the trophy wall.

Needs to be posted everytime someone asks "why aren't we a top six club?"

Rodger's has said it before. But it bears repeating.

Only CL money, repeatedly, and a growing fanbase willl get us near there.
