A squad capable of winning trophies? Like the FA Cup?

Yes, I want us to win the FA cup for the instant gratification, but I also want us to build for the long term. Hopefully it isn`t either or!

Both as I never want us to lose a game but being a realist I think we’ll  only manage one. Out of the two I would choose top 4 after missing out last year.I just don’t think I could stand the press rubbing their hands together with glee if we missed out again and loving the fact we were perhaps replaced by one of the  so called big 6 again .

I want to beat Man United, I want to win the FA Cup and I want to finish top but will settle for second as Man City are going to be tough to catch.

If it was a certainty that progressing in the FA Cup would harm our chances of a top 4 finish, then in the context of last season's capitulation and the bigger financial incentive of Champions League football and the appeal it has for keeping current players and attracting new ones and denying one of our rivals those riches and status and the fact that I will not be able to go to the FA Cup final.

I would be happy to lose the game...

...but it is not a certainty if anything losing to United in the cup is just as likely to have a detrimental effect on our season as a positive one. Winning is a habit it breeds confidence, beating United on Saturday will give us confidence when we play them in the league.

If it was a choice I could make this season I would choose top 4, but it's not a choice anyone has to make. We could do both or neither.

Good times whatever your view  lol

Exactly, even when we won the title, no one genuinely thought we would be talking about potential CL football ever again lol we are a different animal now and expectations have gone up. Anything but top 4 and an FA Cup win would be seen as disappointment haha

The two aren't mutually exclusive, but it's hard to deny that going out of the FA Cup will boost our chances of the top 4 in some way. It obviously won't guarantee it, but it will increase the chances. That is more important to me at the minute than winning the FA Cup behind closed doors.

We've lost Praet and Justin to long-term injuries in FA Cup matches this season. More matches = more chance of injuries, more fatigue, more distraction and less time on the training pitch preparing for matches. One or all of those things could prove pivotal in the race for the top 4.

There is also a small part of me that doesn't want us to win the cup this year. I really look forward to the FA Cup in normal seasons and the main reason for that is the excitement of potentially reaching a stage that we haven't reached in my lifetime. If we win it this year, behind closed doors, that will take the edge off that excitement once we are back to normal.

Having said all of that, of course I would love to see us beat Man Utd on Sunday, if not purely just to see us beat Man Utd.

I think it is either or this season... perhaps now we've got to the QF it's slightly different but in the earlier rounds , when we were still in the Europa Cup and fighting to keep a top 4 place , then, in my opinion we should have deprioritised the FA Cup..it cost us injuries we couldn't afford to have, Praet against Stoke for example!

Build a stronger squad with more strength in depth.. then we can compete on multiple fronts.. this season trying to do so may cost us failure on all 3 fronts!

Strangely enough, I think winning on Sunday INCREASES our chances of getting into the CL. Pattern broken, mental block overcome, confidence and momentum and all that.

Bugger, that’s screwed it royally, as the reverse could be true.

True. I think it's an important match, and I think that's probably the feeling within the club too. I think we'll see a very determined performance indeed.

.....if you have a strong squad yes!

When you don't have a strong squad, like us, then you cannot afford to pick and choose what competition you want to be in.

Sport is about winning and every game, every competition, should be taken seriously. Especially for a club like us.

Why does this always have to be one or the other? We win 3 cup games and 5 league games and we have both?

Not as simple as that obviously, but I never understand why it has to be pick one or the other?

We now have a maximum of 12 games left this season, and players returning to fitness, we should be going all out to try and win the FA Cup and finish top 4.

Great post - pretty much word for word what I would have said.

If we get to the FA Cup final we only have to play 2 extra games and thats still gives us a  load of free midweeks.

Ideally both, at present we could totally achieve that.

But if there was a theoretical decision to be made in which we'd have to sacrifice one or the other, then no question top-four.

As @Jon the Hat said, it'll be the next step in keeping the club on the upward trajectory. The money and prestige will help attract the players that, down the line, will help bring us the glory.

I'd like an FA cup win as much as anyone on this forum, but we're playing the long game here and and FA Cup win isn't what we need to take the club to the next level.

You'd have to pretend it's the 'same' trophy it was for most of those 137 years. More like the Squad Depth Cup now.

Each to their own but with many PL teams not prioritising it and playing under strength teams as a consequence the FA Cup has lost it’s gloss for me.

I’d be happy enough for us to win it but I see CL and the money and transfer options that can bring as having a potentially greater benefit to the club in the years ahead.

Easy to see until you're scrambling for tickets for the final, then everyone loves "the magic of the cup".
