Europa League 2021/22 Thread

Hadn’t realised until I saw an article on the club website yesterday that 3rd in the Europa League group stage drops into Europa Conference. You would imagine we therefore have a very strong chance of still playing some European football as late into the season as March 2022.

And I've never been to Liechtenstein before!

Ah yeah you’re right we did. But I think that was a little bit of luck with the right teams dropping out. Hopefully same again then

In theory we should be more likely for pop 2 than less likely as getting through to the last 16 of last year's Competition will have given us a load more points.

I thought we ended up in pot two last year ?

Don't forget that each pot contained 12 teams last season (8 this year). So if we were ranked 24th last year, it was Pot 2, but this year would be Pot 3.

Either way, I think we will be in Pot 2 this year quite comfortably (mid table!). Will take a lot of results to go our way for us to end up in Pot 1.

Yeah, I think it's time the away goal rule has been removed. The home team no longer have a big advantage that the away goal rule needs to exist.

.. with all the games we will be playing the coming season, who needs extra time!!!

Getting back into the Country (when allowed to travel) then becomes an exercise of logistical mastery as the last means of transport to get you on the flight or ferry is at the end of the first half of extra time. So you either leave before the end or decide to get back on the first mode of transport the next day.

There is a massive reluctance to concede in the home leg as it could be a costly situation with the away goals rule, but it nulls games and the approach of managers. There is an art to playing in this format, and it is just not something we have yet acquired.

  • 3 weeks later...

Bumping this up as more qualifying games are being played this week/next and the draw for the EL 3rd Qualifying round (albeit with a lot of unknown teams). Still need to get through the qualifying rounds before we really know what pot we are in and what are possible opponents may look like. It's all down to how CL qualifying goes.

Guaranteed to drop into the group stage phase so far is the loser of the Spartak Moscow/Benfica playoff match and the loser of the Genk/Shakthar playoff match.

Does anyone have a link to the website that showed the coefficient pots in a worst case scenario?

It made the early qualifying rounds interesting to keep an eye on

I have this if its any good. Just scroll down. We are 40 now out of the EL.

Green: Group stage qualified

Yellow: Loses in from Champions League playoff round

Red: Loses in from Champions League 3rd round League Path (August 10th)

White: Wins in through Europa Playoff round.

The white section will change on Monday when the playoff round draw is made as a couple of those clubs will undoubtedly end up drawing each other. Ferencváros, FC Midtjylland, and Royal Antwerp are the most likely to be included after the draw.

The only change that could really happen today is if Midtjylland knock off Celtic. Lose to PSV in the next round and they're with us unless Galatasary overturn the 5-1 deficit tomorrow as well. Celtic are still expected to join us win or lose. The result of Sparta Prague/Rapid Vienna doesn't matter as they're both expected to fall into Europa eventually.

On the bottom right is the Danish champion. They will enter the champions league in the playoff round and will just need to lose to get into the Europa Group Stage.

How come West Ham's coefficient is so high when they haven't achieved anything in Europe for over 40 years and some of the teams with a lower coefficient qualify pretty much every year?

They take the English minimum as their coefficient

Considering Celtic gain European qualification 'automatically' every season due to the lack of serious domestic rivals, their co-efficient is not much higher than ours.  Presume the SPL's low co-efficient League rating is the reason for this?

They would start low than PL clubs but basically you get naff all points in the group stages / Europa League.

Well at least the mighty Celts have avoided having to qualify for the UEL group stage this year due to the introduction of the Conference League.
