Think it's just easier to have a temporary timetable or total suspension for the whole day. Leicester to London trains are running some sort of service I believe, yet Cross country trains have suspended the Leicester - Melton - Stansted service completely until Wednesday. None of this helps if you still have to get to work though.

I would probably use the internet to let people know in advance rather than them finding out on the platform that the trains are canned.

Revised timetables were published yesterday and online train time checkers are showing this. No reason that people couldn't have found out this info before leaving the house.

They are cancelling them in the morning long before it gets to that temperature?

It's called being proactive and not having a train derail due to the buckled tracks and causing costly damage to life or the train itself...

Of course, given sufficient application of that 35 degrees then the question of hunting for enough food and water and finding adequate shelter might arise again.

It already is in quite a few places, and there's no reason to suspect that number won't increase in the near and mid term future.

It is going to happen, as I think I’ve said on here a few times, the best long term is housing in Scandinavia. The middle part of the world will be uninhabitable in not too long. Also a good old war doesn’t help. The last time Ukrainian wheat was blocked the Arab spring occurred, this time the social unrest by 100m starving Africans turning up on our doorsteps could be a bit worse! That will give Sandra a reason to tut!

Should cancel the trains indefinitely. If they don't run there is no chance they can derail.

Plus, they are cancelling them at random, ie the 9am train gets cancelled but the 10am one runs fine.

They did. The trains are getting cancelled whilst they are on the platform waiting for them to arrive.

Cancelling some trains and not others surely leads to trains being busier. That's all you need on a hot journey.

Depends if people follow the advice on only needing to travel unless absolutely essential...

I appreciate there is probably more to it but trains all over the world appear to work fine in various extreme weathers but ours seem unable to cope with anything.

Tracks over here are tested to a certain temperature which is below hotter countries. looks like we have to accept delays and cancellations on v hot days or to paint the rails white (will be cheaper than relaying all the tracks!).

Im sure 1976 will be mentioned at some point today :D

Hot summer, 10 weeks of going purple and being chucked a freezing cold bath by your mum and kids setting fire to cornfields for a laugh. Days of our lives.

Is there a correlation between anti vaxers and those who think it won’t be 38/40c or that 38/40c is just a nice summers day ????

just kidding of course ……

Given some of the shocking levels of scientific illiteracy on the Covid thread, I absolutely guarantee you that there will be a substantial proportion of members on this forum (possibly some posting here) maintaining climate change is either exaggerated or faked.

That's a pretty dark outlook, but I honestly cannot refute it - if anything, it's towards the nicer end of the "bad" outcomes that might lie ahead.

Have a look at some of the threads that mention climate change on here. Yes, there are those who do maintain exactly that.
