I'm sure I heard it right on a weather forecast earlier.  Expect thousands of fatalities on Monday.  The scaremongering reaches out past covid I see.

Wtf are you on about?

The one on the left was from before we had fancy display techniques which show the temp variation with coloured background (hotter = redder and colder = bluer

next you’ll be showing us magnetic sunshine symbols and asking why we can’t go back to that !

The heat will be unprecedented in this country - the only saving grace will be that humidity will be low so a dry heat.

It likely will. But it’s for 2 days. And according to the Met Office just now on bbc news. It’s likely to be a one in 15 year event. If it hits 40 that is.

When was last time UK regularly had 39?

it’s a documented fact that in heatwaves there are excess deaths

I doubt that saying hundreds will die as a consequence of the temps sun thru Tues is likely to be wrong. She said ‘hundreds, if not thousands’ - to me that says that it’s possible a thousand could die, not that thousands will die.

It never has in the past few hundred years

to say that it will become a one in fifteen year event over the next few decades is imo, conservative.  it’s not scaremongering….

Precisely. So showing the weather forecast as very red visually is nothing out of the ordinary, or shouldn't be seen as.

I'd say 9 times out of 10 the weather forecast leans towards the more extreme end and the weather is rarely as bad as they say it will be.  Not saying that 40 won't happen but at the same time wouldn't be at all surprised if the top temperature on Monday/Tuesday is more like 35-36.  Still hot as hell, but not quite the end of the world.

Tempted by some long days in the office on Monday and Tuesday, air con on full blast all day, with my desk being right underneath it

Our foyer is not going to be fun at all though, whole thing is basically just a big greenhouse, it has been bad enough the past week (like stepping off a plane) but I expect Monday / Tuesday will be horrendous

It's probably worth reminding that the best weather forecasting comes from the met office. Most people get their information from the BBC or Google that get their information from Europe. I think the BBC use the Netherlands for their weather.

For next week the forecast is as follows

1476902091_Screenshot_20220715-230217_MetOffice.thumb.jpg.48c408a64658452f277ab996887b7edd.jpgScreenshot_20220715-230201_Chrome.thumb.jpg.7bab46745857678c433f10e989aed182.jpg

We are the best at weather in the world, the met is usually bang on.

Aha, good to see the discussion mentioned in the WGMG thread has made it here.

Just for the record:

- This heatwave is part of an overall increasing temperature trend

- Events like this will become longer and more frequent in the future along with other extreme weather

- This was predicted thirty years ago and the vast majority of the scientific community has been saying it ever since

Yes, this is "just summer". But it's the preview of the new "just summer", which might not be as pleasant as the old one.

So I’m taking it that 40 is not normal for you guys.  What is a normal summer high?

This may seem silly, but I am curious - are there still a lot of people without air conditioner units?

Certain parts of the US, it is common to have houses without.  But that’s because they dont have stretches of high temps.

Here in Texas, it stays over 39 from the end of June till the beginning of September.  We’ve had a couple days over 42, which make me glad for the pool.

It’s even worse in places like Arizona and Nevada.

I don’t know a single person who has air con at home. My work doesn’t have it either. Monday and Tuesday is not going to be fun.

Royal Mail have said we can start earlier on Monday to avoid the heat.

By 30 mins. I kid you not   it'll be exactly zero degrees cooler.

Typical of the French, surrendering to the heat.
